Juwan Howard RE: Status Of Sanderson

Submitted by 42-27 on December 16th, 2023 at 5:49 PM

Title says it all.  Ouch.  This sucks.

Why even comment on this if you're Juwan? Just decline to answer or say things are steady.

Tweet link.

MOD EDIT - Link to more detailed article HERE, which includes the following more detailed quotation:

Howard was asked about Sanderson’s status with the program. “I’m not sure,” Howard said. “I would definitely say to you, go back to that statement that Warde made and that will of course answer any question that you have.

Please include an article if you're going to do this. People can very easily manipulate the discussion using only tweets. - LSA

Once upon a time, Howard's name was coming up in NBA head coaching searches while he was receiving praise as a Miami Heat assistant, yet he kept getting passed up. I feel like with each passing year, we are perhaps finding out why.

"... yet he kept getting passed up."

With the Heat, perhaps, but this happened just a couple of years ago:

Doesn't mean you or anyone else needs to be happy with the current state of affairs .....

I don't understand this sentiment at all. Sanderson is not Ben Herbert. He was never talked about as someone who is fundamental to the team culture. He just seems like a very good strength coach, I don't see why people love that more than an actual alumnus who led our team to the big ten championship two seasons* ago.

Yeah, because the guy who hired Shimmy Schembechler and a coach who was commits cyber crimes is an impeccable judge of leadership and values and qualified to hire the next men's basketball coach. Not to mention the overzealous weasel who was setting up his own sting operations.

I love Harbaugh, but this kinda shit makes no sense.

I'd like to hear the entire question and response in context and if there were any follow ups.  If Sanderson doesn't want to be there anymore I'm not quite sure what can be done to fix that relationship, but it does feel like this is more than some guys getting into a yelling match.

This is a terrible thread. I don't know why people have to make things up to pile onto what is a valid concern. There is plenty to criticize Juwan about -- but this is confabulation. His actual answer to the question:

"there’s still a review happening at this moment.”

Direct quote from the article.

We don't have to demonize Juwan with nonsense; you can focus on the things that are actually done and not done in the program. Plenty worthy of criticism without reacting as if this answer means he is an irresponsible fool.

That people are actually suggesting James Joseph Harbaugh as part of a basketball hiring committee really screams delusion when Harbaugh has hired: Shemy Schembechler, Alex Yood, Matt Weiss, Bob Shoop, Pep Hamilton... and those are just the disasters, not ones that didn't work out. On the bright side, only a few of those names have committed serious crimes.

“I’m not going to comment on personnel issues right now. Our boys just played a great game and picked up another win,. I’m proud of them. they’ve done a great job of dealing with some adversity this season, and I couldn’t be prouder of them. I’d like to focus right now on the game that we just played.“

This isn't a good situation but it's telling that people have their knives out for Howard a bit.

Must have burned the breeches of many an mgoblog slogger that the team played hard and well for Juwan. Or that they won at all.

There were stretches like this for Beilein, as well. When the clueless types went crazy game after game. When they suddenly recovered to get into the tourney down the stretch, playing just enough D to do so.

It's going to be fun to see Juwan proceeding despite the haters.

Juwan's doing fine, and will be here through 2025 at least if he cares to be. He's also a far more respected figure in the world of basketball than Beilein will ever be. And I say that as the guy who was telling people Beilein was a Hall of Fame coach here, to total derision as people said unbelievably stupid things about him through his first four years as our coach. Juwan has twelve more wins through four seasons than Beilein did, and this team is coming together.

Sanderson serves at Juwan's discretion, and Sanderson proved highly disloyal--not just to Juwan, but to all of the staff--in challenging him directly in front of the players. We're in a mode where light middleweights here will jump on anything, absolutely anything he says now and see it in a negative light. But it's just possible that when Juwan said he wasn't sure he meant that he wasn't sure. Go out into the real world and ask people about the basketball knowledge and achievement of, say, a Howard Eisely in comparison to a Jon Sanderson. There are dozens of Jon Sandersons out there, chafing to work at Michigan. The likelihood is that after a long slog here, Sanderson had stopped getting through to the players. Next man up.
