Justin Turner Position Change?

Submitted by cbishop on
I am not a member of scout, but on the front page there is a article saying there are a half of dozen spring position changes with the picture being Justin Turner. Can somebody with a membership verify if he really is switching positions.

Nothing to worry about. It's pretty great that our secondary went from being extremely thin last year to being very deep (if not really that experienced). I tHink we're going to see the JTs at the corners backed up by plenty of freshmen, and Woolfolk/EmilIen at deep safety and Kovacs/Williams at SS, again with pleNty of freshmen behind Them.

I think Woolfolk will end up starting...somewhere in the defensive backfield. Where, either deep safety or corner, we do not know yet but he will start. Really started to show some quality leadership skills back there and should be our most solid and experienced player back there. Thought the defense was far better with him playing deep, but he may need to play corner at some point due to an utter lack of experience there. Scary to think that we could start two corners with 0% of in-game college experience. Definately feel that we will start at least one DB whose a true freshman though, money is on Christian or Dorsey obviously.

Wow, talk about bold prediction of the day... Although we don't have much for experienced depth at corner, we at least have talented depth. At deep safety, we don't even have that, and it's a mentally more difficult position to play.

I'm guessing they're alluding to the fact that some still believe he will be a safety (at some point). Given our lack of depth at CB and the fact that we have a couple options at safety, he isn't going anywhere...

I know someone in the ticket department who got it from a good 3rd source that the reason JT redshirted was because RR has been grooming him to be the QB this year. Denard is moving to CB. I know this is big news and I would have started a thread but I didn't want to bump Mick McCabe from the front page!

Turner has to play in the secondary. The feeling was in his recruitment that he had the ability to play either s or CB, but would probably play CB. A "move" to another spot in the defensive backfield is a nothingburger. He hasn't established himself at any spot yet, though I have no doubt he'll be a playmaker once he hits the field this fall.

This is what the post was talking about : Teric Jones back to DB (he apparently made a strong impression on the DC last year) Cameron Gordon to free safety NOT LB Steve Watson to DE Kelvin Grady still at slot for the moment... but may still move to RB in the spring JT Turner starting out at corner in the spring.... but still could be a safety though You've already heard Moundros to LB

Man, we are going to have a lot of young free safeties: Cam Gordon, Vlad, MRob and Carvin Johnson. Outside of Woolfolk, who do we have to play SS? Vinopal and Thomas Gordon? No offense to those guys, but they were our lowest rated recruits for two consecutive years (kickers excluded). This makes me want Dorsey at SS. He could have that job as a back-up for a season and a starter for 3.

I'd be very surprised if JT Turner moves to Safety. If he does, we have JT Floyd and true freshman at CB, that's not gonna cut it. Although, if Cullen and Dorsey are looking really good at CB once they get here in the summer, I wouldn't be totally against Turner moving to safety. A starting secondary of Cullen, Dorsey, Woolfolk and Turner might be pretty dangerous, albeit incredibly young at CB.

So we should have the following groups: Corners: Turner, Christian, Dorsey, Floyd, Teric Jones Safeties: Woolfolk, Kovacs, Emilien, Williams, Cam Gordon, MRob Cool. One or more of these guys will be stars.

Having Woolfolk and Turner play the same position doesn't make a whole lot of sense. I know we haven't seen Turner play, but given that he's been in the system for a year and was pretty highly touted, you have to imagine that he's the 2nd best defensive back we have. If Turner is being moved to safety, that probably means they'll put Woolfolk at corner. I doubt this, but I obviously don't have any special information. It just seems strange to move the only experienced competent safety we have to corner. Still, I fully expect both to be on the field next year, one at corner and one at safety. Who plays where will be anyone's best guess until the UConn game.

Chances are slim that both Dorsey and Christian will be ready to start this year. One or the other (or Turner) could move to SS after this year. The strong safety spot is taken care of if Woolfolk plays there. So you throw a bunch of bodies at the cornerback positions, and see what sticks. There's no sense in putting a freshman at SS because he's almost certainly going to be behind Woolfolk. You might as well put the freshmen at a position where they can at least compete for playing time.

?? Scout must have changed the pic accompanying the article, because the photo that's in place now is of Cam Gordon. And he's kind of scary-looking.

on both sides of the ball and was in the game on almost every down in high school and since he has gotten to Michigan he has gained 25-30 Lbs so he could play corner or safety so long as he still has the same quickness
