Just for fun, here's Matt Charoneau's (Det News MSU beat writer) season predictions
He predicted a 10-2 season, 7-2 in the BIG with the losses coming from Northwestern (!) and OSU. He had a lot of faith that MSU's offense would improve due to the rearranging of the deck chairs.
The line for the Maryland game is telling. "Nov. 30 vs. Maryland: By kickoff the Spartans should know if they’re playing for a chance at the division title or simply improving their bowl position." They will, indeed, be looking to improve their bowl position. From not bowl eligible to eligible is definitely an improvement.

Exactly. OP, it would be helpful to describe who the Det News author is (who is he, btw)?
November 18th, 2019 at 9:21 AM ^
Where's the fun?
November 18th, 2019 at 9:22 AM ^
Whatever happened to that bro who asked Harbaugh the "most over hyped coach in the history of sports" or whatever question at Big Ten media days in 2018? Did he go into hiding?
November 18th, 2019 at 9:33 AM ^
i believe he is the guy that asked Dantonio the "dumbass question" earlier in the season
November 18th, 2019 at 9:48 AM ^
Ah, found him. He hasn't tweeted since February.
November 18th, 2019 at 10:07 AM ^
Different guy. The "dumbass" question guy was Hondo Carpenter, who I had never heard of before but is apparently a longtime, respected MSU reporter/writer. I'm sure that guy carried the water for MSU (and Dantonio) for years and years so for Dantonio to snap like that obviously means he's just about lost everyone outside of the truest true believers.
The loser Big Ten Media guy you're thinking of is some douche canoe named Crowley Sullivan. He talked a ton of shit on Twitter before last year's game and then continued running his mouth afterward about how classless Michigan was, etc. I see he no longer writes for the highly esteemed "Spartans Wire" nor has he posted on Twitter since February. A glance at his timeline during the football offseason reveals some truly hilarious "articles" about MSU and Dantonio.
November 18th, 2019 at 10:27 AM ^
Hondo is a longtime MSU writer. Respected? ...not so much.
November 18th, 2019 at 10:32 AM ^
Yeah, I honestly have no idea. I'd never heard of the guy until the "dumbass question" thing and then I started seeing people refer to him as just "Hondo" which to me meant he must have been around for a long time and gained some respect. I'm happy to be wrong about the latter, though!

No, Paul is alive and not well in SEC sountry, currently trying to defend his hero, Saban for ruining the career of his QB by trying to run up score late in a game that was clearly out of reach
November 18th, 2019 at 10:29 AM ^
Today I learned that trying to score points in the second quarter is considering running up the score late.
November 18th, 2019 at 11:33 AM ^
It' not about running up the score, it's protecting your QB, Saban said he wasn't 100% during the LSU game, so he should have pulled him with a comfortable lead, whenever that happened.
November 18th, 2019 at 1:58 PM ^
Candidate for underrated comment of the day, for sure
November 19th, 2019 at 10:07 PM ^
Jim should have just replied with:
"Next question".
That seems to be OK with the Spartoon crowd.

I wonder if matt has since removed his lips from mork deeanthony's ass???

Graham Couch is my preferred drug of schadenfreude
Final regular season MSU record: 10-2 overall, 7-2 Big Ten
November 18th, 2019 at 9:54 AM ^
These are great.
At least this jackass got the Northwestern game correct!
November 18th, 2019 at 10:07 AM ^
I personally enjoyed "...gives the Spartans time to refocus and take out their frustration on the Illini, who might or might not be slightly improved. The Lovie Smith era has shown no sign of going anywhere."
November 18th, 2019 at 10:31 AM ^
He got annoyed on his LSJ podcast that people tweeted at him with his "Michigan will never beat Lewerke" column. Then he pretended he didn't care because I think he immediately realized that it was dumb to be all sad about getting called out on Twitter for a bad take that did not age well.
November 18th, 2019 at 11:15 AM ^
Wow, they both predicted 10-2 / 7-2 with losses to osu. Otherwise, the first guy picked a loss to NW (HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA *breath* HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAH) and the second guy has a loss to psu, with a blowout win over Illinois.
That... did not go so well.
On the other hand, they may both be correct about Rutgers just due to how bad Rutgers is. But honestly, I wouldn't be surprised if Maryland at least put up a fight, since they appear to be able to play well against bad teams.
November 18th, 2019 at 12:37 PM ^
I love the Illinois rolls over late in this game and it gets out of hand
November 18th, 2019 at 3:15 PM ^
My favorite thing about this article is that he makes hyper-specific score and play predictions. He literally predicted Raequan Williams would intercept a screen pass in the 4th quarter against ASU for a td. Why??? How is that not just filler by throwing out random predictions???
November 18th, 2019 at 9:27 AM ^
I actually love stuff like this. There's a lot of gold in this.
Illinois game: "This would qualify as the only part of the schedule that could be described as easy."
Michigan game: "It likely means Michigan State’s offense has found something while Michigan’s is again grasping at straws ... Michigan State’s defense is exactly as good as everyone thinks it is."
Rutgers game: "The Spartans head into the final two weeks of the season playing the worst two teams in the division. They’ll likely be doing it while paying attention to the scoreboard to see if they get any help in the battle to reach the conference championship game."
November 18th, 2019 at 9:33 AM ^
You had to be smoking some serious shit to think this spartan team had a real shot at going to Indy.
November 18th, 2019 at 9:56 AM ^
Why exactly? They returned a solid defensive front seven and a garbage secondary, and despite being completely inept on offense last year, they had all the coaches play musical chairs for their new job and changed nothing else. If you think you need more than that to take a run at Indy, ooooh wait yes I agree that was a hideously stupid thing to predict.
November 18th, 2019 at 9:57 AM ^
I tried to find a tweet from August from a guy at CBS Sports (I believe) that had Sparty making the playoffs. Couldn't find it, I'm sure Scott Bell has it somewhere.
November 18th, 2019 at 11:22 AM ^
This is essentially the same team as last year. They would've been 6-6 last year if the Dantonio weather machine didn't strike the PSU game. Their lofty rankings were based on the belief that their offense couldn't be worse this year.
November 18th, 2019 at 9:31 AM ^
I can't imagine being a MSU beat writer is ever much fun.
At least Rexrode managed to escape to Nashville.
November 18th, 2019 at 10:03 AM ^
I'd love a job where I could be wrong all the time and still get paid.
November 18th, 2019 at 12:01 PM ^
People really like their hats to fit. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
November 18th, 2019 at 2:04 PM ^
Weatherman in Michigan for you sir
November 18th, 2019 at 9:32 AM ^
These are pretty good too. 10-2 seemed to be the consensus for MSU writers this year.
November 18th, 2019 at 9:49 AM ^
Serious question: what is the point of making a prediction such as:
It’s a one-score game the entire way with too many field goals for either side to feel confident. MSU uses a fake field goal to convert a fourth down in the fourth quarter and gets closer for Matt Coghlin’s go-ahead 31-yarder with 1:34 left. Michigan goes four and out, with David Dowell’s pass break-up sealing the win for the Spartans.
I get trying to make a prediction of the score and the general flow of the game, but the specific details projected here are just weird.
November 18th, 2019 at 10:15 AM ^
Because this person is not wearing their journalism hat. They're writing Spartan Fan Fiction.
November 18th, 2019 at 9:33 AM ^
Don't know who this clown is but he can't be any worse than Sparty Baumgardner (who, fortunately, has been finally demoted into irrelevance). Anyway, MSU is trash as are all of their slappies.
November 18th, 2019 at 9:43 AM ^
Huh? Baumgardner actually has very reasonable and rational takes about U-M and MSU, very objective. And getting poached by The Athletic is hardly a demotion.
November 18th, 2019 at 10:00 AM ^
Baumgardner is an msu grad who was relentless in his criticism toward brady hoke regarding the kicker expulsion while knowing full well hoke was prohibited from speaking about the matter under ncaa rules. he's a trash msu sparty and im loving knowing that he's in agony this morning after his school just suffered the worst beatdown of the dantonio era. fuck msu and fuck sparty baumgardner. both are utter trash and deserve what was just inflicted upon them.

Brandon and Hoke deserved criticism for how the Gibbons situation was handled, . You sound like the delusional Penn State deniers. Quit drinking and go to bed.
November 18th, 2019 at 10:40 AM ^
Umm he actually has a better job writing for The Athletic and does a pretty damn good job with his analysis of UM football.
November 18th, 2019 at 9:46 AM ^
Lol. Go read some of Nick's stuff on the Athletic (he's covering both Michigan and MSU football for them now and overseeing a dedicated beat writer for both). He's roasted Dantonio and MSU all year.
November 18th, 2019 at 10:01 AM ^
because he (like every other msu slappy) wants dantonio fired because they think it will improve the program. and wtf is "the athletic"? is that where he ended up after getting bounced from freep? lmao
November 18th, 2019 at 10:13 AM ^
I followed Nick's stuff for a long time. If he's actually a Spartan slappy, he's pretty bad at it.
November 18th, 2019 at 10:18 AM ^
"wtf is the athletic?" really shows how out of touch you are. I almost thought you were an A+ troll for a second, and then i read your other comments. Alas, you're just a moron.
