Joshua Josephs commits to Tenn.

Man this is a really weird cycle. I know these guys just got hired, but they have had their foot in the door on so many recruits, and they just slipped away.

Have you ever been to Knoxville?  The city is great and the campus is awesome.  The BBQ (Calhouns) on the river is off the hook delicious.  Then to add a little more flavor, the Co-Eds are Top Ten.

What more can a growing boy want in life?

I travel to Knoxville several times per year and I always end up on campus for the BBQ.  Their game-day traditions are almost (almost I say) as good as ours.

Sweet P's BBQ on Jackson > Calhouns.  Calhouns is good but they serve their own beer which is just ok.  Their location on the river is cool though.

I do get why kids would want to come to UT.  Nice campus.  They just approved a big update to their football practice facilities.  Plus it's close to his home and all of his road games will be close as well.  It's just hard to pull kids out of their region of the country.  Particularly the south.

Lol UM is 10-1 and still losing recruits to shitty ass Tennessee.

Doesnt make sense. Obviously there’s still some time/targets left on the board, but these young coaches aren’t getting the job done yet.

Oh well. Beat Ohio.

i can tell you as a matter of fact that SEC schools are, and have been for decades, ridiculous with payola for recruits and players.  and while i don't have any idea about this specific recruit, it is the coin of the SEC realm that is as common as water.

and then you can go search the internet for boatloads of other stories re: SEC paying recruits.

if you're going to troll, suggest picking something that is not so easily controverted.

in my day they weren't.  guys got nothing, no cars, no cushy jobs, and don't tell me when we were having beers with guys like the hammersteins or mallorys that they had any money.  they didn't.

i doubt michigan is giving any benefits, but i will grant you that there are probably at least some boosters who give/have given the proverbial $100 handshake.  but compared to the SEC that is small arms fire in the face of nuclear weapons.  remember rashaan gary saying he turned down $100K to come to michigan - it wasn't because michigan outbid clemson.

you don't track very well.  first, it is obvious in my post that from personal knowledge 'michigan' wasn't in the business of benefits back in my day.  second, they are highly unlikely to be in it now.  that said, i allow for the possibility that some booster(s) somewhere at some time may have dished some out but even then it would be small potatoes compared to what goes on in the SEC.

my knowledge base is my own experience, the information from a number of friends whose sons did/do play college FB, including in the SEC, and having two sons who play college FB and probably one or two more who will also.

you make the comment that 'we have all seen [the benefits]' at U of M.  i have not, so please share.

and your post below is also a lack of tracking.   he wasn't responding to me.  he was likewise telling you to put up or shut up with proof.

i appreciate the input.  that said, do you have anything that corroborates that?  any player we can look to?  any pictures/posts/articles like we see so many of for ohio and SEC teams?  i know it has been said here before, but i would like to see some proof.

and if true, we are terrible at it.  you'd think the 'michigan difference' would be helpful and we would outbid anybody else.

Wonder what fast food restaurant the new UT staff is using.  /s

sigh. Sucks to lose this one but can change a lot of minds Saturday if we don’t look like a dead fish.

He wants to know what fast food restaurant (with fast food bags of money) the University of Tennessee is using. NOT!

He also said that we need to win on Saturday.

Well, this recruit was lost to UT with their 6-5 record and zero 10-win seasons since 2007. The #3 ranked class for 2022 is TAMU with zero 10-win seasons in Jumbo’s 4 years. PSU sits at #5 with a coach who has fewer wins than Harbaugh over the last 6 years. Then you have Texas at #7 with their sterling 4-7 record and one 10-win season since 2009. They must’ve missed the win and win memo.

OSU’s recruiting pitch is a pre-NFL factory just like Bama’s and LSU’s and UGA’s. UT is trying to follow suit. That isn’t the UM pitch. For better and mostly for worse, the UM pitch of “40 year decision” and more collegial lifestyle just doesn’t work as well with the top talent. We need to change our pitch more than our W-L record to boost recruiting.

The writing has been on the wall for some time that you will get more elite recruits with letting them not go to class or even see the campus if they don’t want to and pay them well for their time.

Michigan’s approach gets some elite talent. I suspect they would get more if the kids thought there was an option to have the above experience too and not just a 40 year decision.

And this is why there should be a minor league farm system for FB just like every other major sport uses - if kids have zero interest in going to class and just want to be paid asap, they should not be at a university.

If it already rather farcical that they can get full tuition, room, board, tutors, books, stipends, etc. (from the public universities directly) for something that has absolutely nothing to do with their academic performance or merit.  Depending on the school, that is upwards of $100k/year that numerous more academically-qualified students are denied.

It's really not easy to get guys out of the South, and so I generally don't expect it to happen.

UM will have to just get someone else they like.

This has got to be the 6th guy to commit elsewhere when they seemed so close to being committed to us.

Patton went to Baylor, Dillon Bell to Georgia, Tatum to MSU, Nate Johnson to Utah, Finkley to Texas, and now Josephs to Tennessee. I feel like I'm missing a few more.

It really seems like we've not gotten any guys we had a decent chance on, or what felt like a 50/50 shot at us landing them. I really do think our luck will turn, as the huge changes coming with coaches across the landscape will definitely affect recruiting classes.

However, no one is signed so there's so much time left for recruits to change schools.

At least with Tatum it sounds like the coaching change with Clinkscale scuttled that recruitment, which is fine but (you assume) not something you'd see in the future because guys aren't going to have legacy recruits like that.  But yeah, UM has lost out on some guys that you'd hope they close on but this seems to happen every year.  And UM has gotten back into some recruitments that seemed lost as well, such as Conerly and Jackson, though the latter I assume is going to Alabama.

The one common-ish thread with a lot of these guys is that UM was trying to pull them away from the local/regional school(s), which is going to be a tough ask for any school seemingly not named OSU.

But this is going to be the cost of a major staff transition, and one hopes that they can close strong with a couple of guys and then make a push in 2023.  The good thing is that UM can now sell stability with Harbaugh and recent success - 10 wins for the 4th time in 7 years and the potential for an 11th win and a  big-time win in a bowl.
