Josh Ross playing in one more game this season - which one?

Submitted by ReverendBlueJeans on November 12th, 2019 at 12:19 AM

Harbaugh mentioned this is his presser today. Ross can play in one more game and still hypothetically red shirt. I guess it's technically still up in the air, but let's say it happens.

Which remaining game would you play him in and why? I think you could make a case for pretty much any of them, including the bowl game. Sparty, in my opinion, makes the most sense to sit him, but I could also see Harbaugh wanting to bring the house too. Interested in hearing your thoughts.

OSU will torch Glasgow with passing. Michigan will need as much athleticism as possible on defense because OSU is stacked across the board and will attack their best matchup. I like Glasgow, he's a good player, but his skillset isn't favorable for the personnel OSU will attack him with, and Ross can take some of those snaps.

I don't know if Ross is faster/quicker, but he's a more traditional LB than Glasgow so he might be able to hold up at the point of attack better if OSU starts running downhill.

Glasgow, when he can just run flat out to chop a guy down (like he did against ND on that 3rd or 4th down) is very good. Ross can do the same but also take an OSU OL in the face, shuck him, and make a tackle in the box. Glasgow might have a little bit of a problem with that being smaller and lighter (more Safety/hybrid like).

"Jordan Glasgow is slow" is a tired take. In addition to being more than capable of playing sideline-to-sideline (read: Notre Dame, Maryland), he is arguably the most assignment-sound defender on the team. Devin Bush he is not, but the "white guy walk on isn't athletic and is only Gritty McGritterson" view is getting old.

...or it's because a kid from RUTGERS torched him time and time again and people can't let it go.

I'm sure some it is the white gritty walk on...but don't sit there and act like there hasn't been hard evidence of Glasgow getting torched by speedy slot guys.

For me it's simple...

1. You prepare Ross to play in ALL of the games. Theoretically he's your backup at WLB and MLB should there be a longterm problem. If you get to OSU and you haven't been forced to play him...he plays no matter what.

2. Neither Ross nor Glasgow can hang with OSUs slot guys or H-Backs (RB/WR combo guys)...if they want to spread us out. Its DAX HILL who should be playing extensively and not just "and long" situations. You just stay in your 4-2-5 and let McGrone and Ross play MLB and Hudson is the Viper...Glasgow can go back to backing him up and its Dax all fucking game if you're getting spread out in the passing game. Don't force a square peg (Glasgow) into a round hole trying to check these small, shift Giles Jackson/Mike Sainristil types. Dax should be your psuedo starter if that's where they're going.

If they're establishing the run...you've got 4 legit staring LBs for 3 positions...keep guys fresh and rotate them when you can.

We have what we need...it's just can we adapt on the fly or are we going to be too stubborn and say "this is what we live by so this is what we will die by?"

We need to be ready for everything...not adjusting in the offseason and adding zone. We need to have everything ready and dictate to THEM how the game is going to go. GATA!

Ever hear of the importance of depth? You hold on to him until you need him. Unless it's the last meaningful game. Then you play him. (And no, the last meaningful game is not the bowl game. It's THE game.)

Save him for tosu. This may be a fatalistic take, but the defense is going to be on the field more than the offense, and they'll need every fresh body they can get.

Hmmm let me guess: the game against our secondary rival whose program has completely imploded this season and just gave up a 25 point lead to Illinois or the game against our actual rival who is a top 2 team in the country? I wonder which one...

Why are we doing this?  So...he will play in one more game this season and then play well next season.  Then off to the NFL?

Play him!!

Or is this his decision?

I hope Ross is on board 100% with this decision or he'll be in the transfer portal some day. I know if i was ready to play, knew I could at least share snaps, and had EARNED those snaps, and the coaches told me they wanted to keep me off the field anyway, I'd be pissed.

You just don't do that to people against their will. The best players should play every game.

Is ReverendBlueJeans a known troll and distrusted agent? If not, what's with the negs? Good thing points aren't working.

Play Josh Ross against Indiana. I don't like throwing him out there rusty for OSU. Let him take snaps against IU and save some reps for the other guys to get ready for OSU.

See? It's a debatable point. Stop negging the OP!

I am going to take a wild guess and say the biggest game of the year for UM against a team that they are desperate to beat, and could use all the help they can get against.

People of mgoblog: Glasgow is the starter.  He's really good.  The coaches don't care about OSU's speed, he's the starter and the best guy right now.  If he wasn't, Ross would be playing and they wouldn't care about the redshirt.

He plays if there's an injury, and that's it.

This is theoretically a good conversation topic...

But ultimately, it isn't. Because there is only one answer. Because, while losing this Saturday would stink, it is unlikely, and it doesn't have the impact of The Game. The narrative of Michigan's program hinges on the events of one Saturday and one Saturday only.

There is only one game left that really matters. Play him in that one.

Having him against osu should fire him and the defense up.  We need every little motivator to beat them.  Would love to see him suit up against osu.

Can't wait for the GAME.

I would play him against Michigan State this week Just to get him tuned up and ready for Ohio State in 2 weeks. I would have him on stand by for the Ohio State game, in case he's absolutely needed. Face it, he was the starter and got injured. Cam came in and was killing it. Glaskow was killing it. its hard to pull a guy who is working. Josh would probably be doing just as good if not better but McGrone and the LB's are playing superb and I wouldn't mess that up. Now, if someone gets injured, I would say Josh is the first man up, unless they are trying to save his red shirt for next season. MSU is a rivalry game and he would likely enjoy playing against old friends.

Josh could start at any D1 school in the country and I pray that his family encourages him to not transfer. He should stick around and play here because. 1. His brother is there to help him  2. His family is in Michigan  3. He and McGrone would be the only two returning LB's with meaningful starting time, so he would assuredly get a starting spot if not his old spot back.  4. Transferring might require him to sit a year but if not, he still wouldn't get to play anywhere else quicker than if he stayed at home.  and  5. his brother James just had a baby and he can spend time being an uncle to baby (Jayce). Josh is a beast, with pro level talent. he just hasn't had the opportunity to play and show it. He should wait on his opportunity to come back around, hit them books, and stay fine tuned and ready. It will be here sooner than you know.
