"JJ = Ken Stabler" -- Sam and Al
I know there's a lot of hate for Al Borges around here, but he provides some data points that are worth considerating, and maybe incorporating. Sam and Al talk a lot about JJ in a very positive way.
My takeaway from Al is he is convinced the team believes that JJ can take them where they want to go, and that is the comparison with Stabler and the Raiders, where, ostensibly, the Raiders offense always trusted implicitly in their QB. Al is convinced the team trusts JJ to take them to the endzone every time they have the ball, and that trust is critical.
If you can listen in the background while getting some work done, I recommend:

"considering" Sorry about making up a word.
Al also gives some good thoughts on Roman Wilson and Ronnie Bell.
Edit: Among "I'll take insightful and yet disturbing qoutes for $1,000, Alex" Al says: "The problem with receivers is you only play with one ball, not with five balls." So correct and yet so different when heard after several inebriants.

It's no worse than my pet peeves: commentating and commentator. Commenting and commenter already exist and they perfectly match the meanings of commentating and commentating. The extra -at- adds nothing.
October 12th, 2022 at 1:03 PM ^
Would disagree here - "commentator" has come to denote a person professionally providing comments about an event (usually a game), whereas anyone can provide comments regardless of vocation.
As such, it has *become* a valid word (and by extension verb) - even my autocorrect recognized it as I am typing this post.

nevertheless, it will be eliminated with the 10th edition of the newspeak dictionary

Are you refudiating "considerating"?
October 12th, 2022 at 2:43 PM ^
you snuck this up on me, so lets conversate. Firstly, irregardless of whether it's a real word, the meaning is understood with having to interpretate it. So I don't think a refudiation is in order. One prevantative measure is administrate a "book of words that aren't words" which will set rules on what is and what ain't a real, useable word, but then common vernacular gets lost. This is a major issue, supposably, in the world of hardcore Scrabble players. This topic is undoubtably a hot button issue, so I'll keep it as inflammatory as possible, thusly, avoiding further argument.
I've said all I care to on this subject. i don't want to be a participator in this any further and I've said my peace.

I agree 100%. When people use those words it's very disorientating.

Another: "trickeration," which began as a joke term and now is widely used without irony.
October 12th, 2022 at 1:30 PM ^
Less grammar and more general football "commentating" pet peeve: end-arounds aren't reverses. Looking at you Gus Johnson on the most recent Ronnie Bell rushing touchdown, but it happens all the time seemingly, even by NFL professionals

”Normality” vs “normalcy” for me
normalcy is so common it’s accepted and the norm, but it didn’t start that way.

Love Al
Love JJ
But Stabler? That guy sucked. 194 TD to 222 Int. How dare you denigrate JJ.
October 12th, 2022 at 12:47 PM ^
Stabler was an NFL MVP and Hall of Famer who led his team to a Super Bowl win. He also played before all the rule changes that favored the offense and opened up the passing game. Interceptions were far harder to avoid then. He completed 60% of his passes in an era where that was almost unheard of. He was the opposite of “sucked.”
October 12th, 2022 at 1:01 PM ^
He's the very reason that Al Davis started drafting the fastest possible WR he could find every year - The Snake rarely missed a bomb downfield. That Madden-fueled Raiders offense was a legit deep threat on every play.
October 12th, 2022 at 1:16 PM ^
Va, I remember seeing a sign from, I believe, either an AFC playoff game or Super Bowl.
The sign said - "Speed Kills. 21". 21 was the jersey number of Cliff Branch, who ran "about" a 10.0 for 100m in college - I'm not sure what his 40 time was - but, he was fast.
As for JJ - I think what we are seeing is the power of his mobility and the challenge it poses to a defense. The key here is - is there a solid #2 in the QB position group. IMO, Cade would definitely be the #2, if he's healthy and ready to go. We just don't know the answer to that question.
FWIW, I hope Cade is 100% (or very close to it) - and, next to JJ on the depth chart.
October 12th, 2022 at 1:22 PM ^
From Bloomington, it looked to me like Davis Warren was present along with Orji, but I didn't see Bowman. I'd say Warren is #2.
October 12th, 2022 at 1:39 PM ^
93 - and, my question becomes - if JJ loses his helmet on a play - then, perhaps it would be Warren. And, nothing against Warren, but his game experience isn't quite the same as Cade's.
Hoping we'll have an opportunity to see a bit more of the depth chart - for score reasons (instead of something else) - as the season continues.
October 12th, 2022 at 2:00 PM ^
Discussion in a thread earlier this week.
- Bowman did not travel because of injury.
- I would hope that most if not all would agree that a healthy Cade would be the ideal #2
- If Cade isn’t healthy, interesting question as to who is #2, Warren vs Bowman - hope we don’t have to find out.
- think you meant that if JJ was out for a play, Orji might br the choice because he is more of a run threat, but for an extended period, we’d much more likely be looking at one of the other qbs (but Orji might get a more prominent wildcat role)

That's right. To get a penalty for Pass Interference and/or holding by the DB's back then was a lot harder to do.
October 12th, 2022 at 2:33 PM ^
Defensive players allowed to have contact with receivers at any point until the ball was in the air.
October 12th, 2022 at 2:36 PM ^
your comment is what makes johhny unitas even more amazing.
October 13th, 2022 at 8:11 AM ^
Rodger Staubach 153 TD-109 INT
Even Bradshaw was 212-210
Stabler’s completion % doesn’t look as good with so many going to the opposition. Especially the ones he threw when losing playoff games.
October 12th, 2022 at 1:16 PM ^
yeah, that hall of fame induction was a massive dodge.
you know who else sucked? a list:
- johnny unitas (290 TDs / 253 INT)
- y.a. tittle (242 / 248)
- terry bradshaw (212 / 210)
- bart starr (152/ 138)
- sammy baugh (187 / 203)
October 12th, 2022 at 2:40 PM ^
sammy baugh averaged 45.1 yds per punt in his career with a high of 51.4 in 1940

Kenny Stabler was one of my favorite NFL players growing up. I trust you are much younger than me and never watched him play.
October 12th, 2022 at 2:40 PM ^
As a kid, I lived and died with the Stabler-led Raiders. The Immaculate Reception left young me feeling like I’d been kicked in the stomach. After they traded him, my passion for sports as a fan was never that intense again.
October 13th, 2022 at 8:04 AM ^
That would be called a hasty generalization.
Rodger Staubach was the best QB
And the Steelers, the best team, dominated the Raiders

October 12th, 2022 at 12:40 PM ^
It's interesting that he debunked the J. Klatt statement about motions - evidently motion on 28 plays, 14 pass, 14 run.
So it was total BS on Klatt's part, a non-starter.
October 12th, 2022 at 1:06 PM ^
Schoonmaker motioned in on his TD catch. He set before the snap, though. I got the impression that Klatt was talking about players in motion at the snap. I don't know how Borges defined it, but I'm guessing he was looking at any pre-snap motion.
October 12th, 2022 at 1:33 PM ^
C. Johnson also motioned on his 29 yard touchdown catch. JJ got him realigned and then motioned him in.
