Former RB at M, current Cass Tech coach. Would be a great hire.

for us at Cass Tech than Wilcher. He's going to be very well known there for a long time. The coaches there are mostly going to be his former assistants. I would expect him to be a top notch recruiter for the area. My only concern would be drop off in their program after he left.
January 16th, 2017 at 2:29 PM ^
My biggest question is how this hire would work under the new propsed rules from the NCAA? Would this cause an issue recruiting any Cass Tech kids for the next two years?
January 16th, 2017 at 2:32 PM ^
That rule is only proposed right now. If Wilcher were hired, he would be "grandfathered" in so it wouldn't apply.
January 16th, 2017 at 2:34 PM ^
The restrictions are for people hired in non-coaching positions. If he's hired as position coach there are none.
January 16th, 2017 at 3:47 PM ^
If Wilcher is, in fact, hired, he will likely be a main recruitter of the Detroit schools. He can keep many pipelines open. He seems like a very affable guy.
January 16th, 2017 at 3:52 PM ^
our cass tech pipeline that has lost some elite guys to osu the past couple years? Yeah I think that changes if this happens.

there is a photo of a kid with JKP, Cesar Ruiz and Ron Johnson. Ruiz is something like 6-3 and 315. Check out RJ in comparison.... He's gigantic for a D End.

Looks like the picture might just be a little tilted, but maybe the parallax guy can come in an verify.
January 16th, 2017 at 2:06 PM ^
the kid in the #1 jersey is 6 feet without shoes
angle makes him look a lot shorter
January 16th, 2017 at 2:30 PM ^
More than a little. Look at the bottom edge of pic, and the floor/wall line behind their feet.

From ESPN profile of #1 in twitpic:
PROS: Keeps pad level low at all times; great attitude
CONS: Needs to improve size & strength; may be a tweener

Really excited for Ron Johnson. There was lots of good reports coming from bowl practice that he has gotten better over the season.

January 16th, 2017 at 2:43 PM ^
That's funny.
January 16th, 2017 at 1:58 PM ^
He's certainly not gigantic for a DE, he's 6'4 250. The guy he's replacing had 3 inches and 30 pounds on him. Some NFL DEs for comparison:
Clowney 6'6 270
Wake 6'3 270
Bennett 6'4 275
Chandler Jones 6'5 260
He's pretty average size for a starting D1 DE.
January 16th, 2017 at 3:15 PM ^
Is that from the mgoblue roster? If yes it's very possible he's put on a good amount of weight since that training camp measurement.
January 16th, 2017 at 5:22 PM ^
I was accounting for weight that he has put on. He came out of high school below 230. The Mgoblue roster lists him at 245.
January 16th, 2017 at 1:36 PM ^
Losing Ty is not a good thing, but if he is gone there is nobody I'd rather have replace him than Thomas Wilcher. Great addition imo.

I think I related this story several months ago, but it's mildly relevant to the thread so....
I saw Wilcher at my daughter's track meet a couple years ago where his daughter was competing for another school. I said "hello" to him and you could see the instant dread in his face. I'm sure he was thinking I was about to accost him about one of his recruits. When I told him I still remembered the whoopin he laid on me in a HS indoor 60 meter race he completely relaxed and we chatted about our girls for a minute. Really good dude.

If he can coach that's really all I care about. Would be a good way to help solidify the Cass Tech pipeline and keep Meyer's filthy hands out.

of his assistants, I would think. It's hard to imagine they would bring in a whole new staff and they would be hostile to Wilcher and Michigan. Rather, I'd expect most of the coaches to be guys who learned under him.
Wilcher was at Cass for a long time. I've never heard anything negative about him from other coaches, despite his success. Any hard feelings weren't aired in public like those towards Partridge.

It would be hard to imagine the coach of Detroit's leading HS program not being Michigan-friendly. Even if the next coach isn't an ex-Michigan player, we have a natural advantage recruiting there due to proximity.
Having Wilcher there has been nice but I don't know how large of an impact he's really had on recruits' decisions.

Make it so.
January 16th, 2017 at 1:54 PM ^
From what I hear, this is not true. Wilcher looking to go more of the Tony Annese route if he ever leaves Cass tech
January 16th, 2017 at 2:02 PM ^
And which route is that? 23? 14?

Yes....he would prefer to stay a Head Coach and run his own program
January 16th, 2017 at 1:55 PM ^
January 16th, 2017 at 1:58 PM ^
Nope. That would be a recruiting violation. Some contact is allowed if he has a pre-existing relationship (which he does with a lot of the guys currently), but incoming freshmen and guys five years down the road likely wouldn't have that pre-existing connection.
January 16th, 2017 at 2:00 PM ^
If he worked for Bama, no problem at all. Michigan stubbornly tries to stick to the letter of the rules, for some reason...

I saw over on scout that samuels is having staff questions. If ty is leaving, are we Screwed on rbs commits?
January 16th, 2017 at 2:22 PM ^
I think we're in good shape for Samuels.

Not sure about screwed but this has to have some impact on recruiting. TW is considered to be one of the top recruiters on the staff so he's probably built important relationships with the recruits..and that esp goes for recruits in his position group.
Plus you know other programs are going to try to exploit this to get his attention.
