Jalen Rose all time Michigan starting 5

Submitted by Rick Grimes on March 26th, 2020 at 12:05 PM

So Jalen Rose came up with his all time Michigan starting 5 for basketball. This is what he had:

Trey Burke

Jalen Rose

Glen Rice

Juwan Howard

Chris Webber

What would you guys put for your starting 5? Obviously it might be nice to have at least one guy from before the 80's.

Off the top of my head, I would put Cazzie in here and take either Rose or Burke out. Keep the rest.

Gary Grant
Cazzie Russell
Glen Rice
Chris Webber
Roy Tarpley

I originally had Juwan at the 4, but Chris hit a growth spurt after college.  College CWebb would be fine at the 4.

I agree.  Gary Grant was a phenomenal player who deserves consideration, but Burke gets that spot.  I think of Jalen's top 5, they would be ranked:

1 - Rice (no question)

2 - Webber

3 - Burke

4 - Rose

5 - Howard

I think the last two are definitely worth questioning against the likes of others on this thread.

Likewise, I'm just old enough to have seen Gary Grant play on TV, and while he was a great one, I don't remember him just completely taking over games the way Burke used to. Part of it is the era he played in vs. today's game that puts a premium on deep shooting.

I like this list, and I agree that Webber, Trey and Glen Rice absolutely have to be on the list, no question. Rose and Howard are less sure things, but I'm with you in that I don't feel anyone is above them. I can get on board with a Cazzie Russell argument, as I know he was very good but don't know enough about him to argue one way or another.

PG Trey Burke

SG Nik Stauskas

SF Glen Rice

PF Roy Tarpley

C Chris Webber

Stauskas was B1G PoY. I know Rose was better in the NBA but Stauskas took care of business his sophomore year.

Having Burke or Rose ahead of Gary Grant is kind of crazy.  Grant was arguably the best player to ever play at Michigan (Cazzie number 1).  Ricky Green was damn good too.

This is tough, but i would probably do this....

Grant PG
Russell (SG instead of small forward, if i cant, then move Rice here?)
Rice (SF)
Webber (PF)
Tarpley (C)

IMO, Grant, Russell and Rice are locks.  Fuck debate, your wrong.  Webber and Tarpley have arguments to move off this list (move Webber to C and open up a PF spot that is better than Tarpley maybe?)

It's hard to do this because of how much the game has changed, from no 3-point line until the 80's to the modern 3-centric game.  I have no sense of Cazzie Russell's outside shooting ability, for example.

A Beilein-style starting 5 might be Burke, Grant, Stauskas, Rice, Webber.  Without a 3-point line, I'd say Grant, Cazzie, Rice, Webber, Tarpley.

Cazzie Russell has to be a lock.

After that it gets really tough, but I'll give it my best shot:

Ricky Green and Gary Grant at the guard positions, Chris Webber and Glen Rice to round out the starting five.

2nd team, if I'm allowed:

Juwan Howard, Jalen Rose, Trey Burke, Rudy Tomjanovich, Phil Hubbard.

Honorable mention: Mo Wagner, Bill Buntin, Roy Tarpley, Terry Mills, Derek Walton, Mitch McGary (if not for his back injuries and fondness for weed, he'd have probably moved up on my list).
