Jalen Rose all time Michigan starting 5
So Jalen Rose came up with his all time Michigan starting 5 for basketball. This is what he had:
Trey Burke
Jalen Rose
Glen Rice
Juwan Howard
Chris Webber
What would you guys put for your starting 5? Obviously it might be nice to have at least one guy from before the 80's.
Off the top of my head, I would put Cazzie in here and take either Rose or Burke out. Keep the rest.

Gary Grant
Cazzie Russell
Glen Rice
Chris Webber
Roy Tarpley
I originally had Juwan at the 4, but Chris hit a growth spurt after college. College CWebb would be fine at the 4.

/\ I like this five with a debate between Trey, Jalen and don’t forget Ricky Green.
Ricky Green led Michigan to the NCAA finals and was an NBA All Star and NBA steals leader with a killer fro!! Greased lightening!

I like this five also but would have to give serious consideration to Rudy T over Tarpley.
Ricky Green may be my favorite basketball player of all time. I was there for the Green-Hubbard teams and they were wonderful to watch. He's listed as being 6'0" but that had to include the 'fro. I stood next to him at the old Waterman gym and he was no more than 5'10"
Rickey Green
Flip Phil Hubbard for Tarpley and we agree.
Hubbard, pre-knee injury, was a beast.
I forgot Hubbard. He could score at will.
For the record, mGrowold predicted Jalen's top 5 months ago before Jalen even contemplated it. #hetoldyouso
Pretty much what I was thinking, except Rudy T. Needs to be on there, probably in place of Webber.

Burke was player of the year. I can’t justify taking him off. Rose hit some big shots. I might take off Howard

Burke belongs on whatever list there is. Was the Consensus NPOY, almost willed his team to a title against the #1 team in America by himself, and he hit the big time shots in the big time moments. When his team needed him to deliver, he delivered. He had the "it" factor.
I agree. Gary Grant was a phenomenal player who deserves consideration, but Burke gets that spot. I think of Jalen's top 5, they would be ranked:
1 - Rice (no question)
2 - Webber
3 - Burke
4 - Rose
5 - Howard
I think the last two are definitely worth questioning against the likes of others on this thread.
Likewise, I'm just old enough to have seen Gary Grant play on TV, and while he was a great one, I don't remember him just completely taking over games the way Burke used to. Part of it is the era he played in vs. today's game that puts a premium on deep shooting.
I like this list, and I agree that Webber, Trey and Glen Rice absolutely have to be on the list, no question. Rose and Howard are less sure things, but I'm with you in that I don't feel anyone is above them. I can get on board with a Cazzie Russell argument, as I know he was very good but don't know enough about him to argue one way or another.

I'm very ok with Jalen's starting 5.

Grant, Tarpley, Webber, Rice, Cazzie
I feel like this is pretty obvious, no?
March 26th, 2020 at 12:20 PM ^
Judging from the posts above yours, I guess not.
March 26th, 2020 at 12:26 PM ^
Well, the first guy got it right, so therefore that was the obvious answer.
People who didn't see the General play have no idea how complete a player he was.

It’s hard to argue against Gary Grant. 6’3” vicious lockdown PGs like him are rare.
So are PGs who win National Player of the Year and lead their team to the national title game.
Just show me the Kansas shot and sprinkle in the Appling pick pocket and drop the mic!
Grant is the best guard that I have seen play at Michigan.
Green and Burke come next.
March 26th, 2020 at 12:45 PM ^
That is mine exactly.
Not at all obvious. I'd put Burke over Grant but it's certainly not an obvious or easy choice either way. Burke's best season was way better than anything Grant did so that gives him the tiebreaker to me.
Both belong in the starting 5! The General & Trey are two of the greatest guards in program history.
Who are you taking out to get Trey and Grant in? Definitely not Cazzie. I could get behind a 3 guard lineup with Rice at the 4 and Webber at the 5.
Tarpley would get the axe
Say what now?
Gary Grant's senior year stats were better across the board compared to Burke's NPOY stats.
And his junior year stats were almost as impressive.
And he was a better defender.
And the Big Ten was much tougher back then.
The Big Ten was as good as it's ever been during Burke's last year. 4 teams in the top 10, 5 in the top 12 on KenPom.
I think Tarpley is the less obvious choice. He was a stud, no doubt, but his cocaine addiction made his play less consistent. Sadly, it eventually took his life.

PG Trey Burke
SG Nik Stauskas
SF Glen Rice
PF Roy Tarpley
C Chris Webber
Stauskas was B1G PoY. I know Rose was better in the NBA but Stauskas took care of business his sophomore year.
I would love Stauskas as a 2nd team player no doubt!

Dy-lan, Dy-lan, Dy-lan, Dy-lan and Dy-lan. They spit hot fire.
Am I doing this right?

Trey Burke
Cazzie Russell
Glen Rice
Chris Webber
Roy Tarpley

I like all the names Im seeing, but i have to give Terry Mills an honorable mention. He was a defensive force, could post up, and hit 3's.
Says here that he attempted four 3s in college and missed all of them:
https://www.basketball-reference.com/players/m/millste01.html
Later in life he got really good at long-range shooting.
I'll always remember the huge shot (turnaround in the lane, IIRC) near the end of the Seton Hall game with Michigan down three.
March 26th, 2020 at 12:36 PM ^
Having Burke or Rose ahead of Gary Grant is kind of crazy. Grant was arguably the best player to ever play at Michigan (Cazzie number 1). Ricky Green was damn good too.
This is tough, but i would probably do this....
Grant PG
Russell (SG instead of small forward, if i cant, then move Rice here?)
Rice (SF)
Webber (PF)
Tarpley (C)
IMO, Grant, Russell and Rice are locks. Fuck debate, your wrong. Webber and Tarpley have arguments to move off this list (move Webber to C and open up a PF spot that is better than Tarpley maybe?)
March 26th, 2020 at 12:39 PM ^
Burke over Grant is iffy.
March 26th, 2020 at 12:40 PM ^
Trey Burke
Jalen Rose
Nik Stauskas
Glenn Rice
Chris Webber
If we are playing a video game, this is my team.
March 26th, 2020 at 12:41 PM ^
Burke
Russell
Rice
Webber
Rudy T. (a little suprised no one mentioned him yet)
markinmsp mentioned him a few minutes before you did :)
March 26th, 2020 at 12:48 PM ^
It's hard to do this because of how much the game has changed, from no 3-point line until the 80's to the modern 3-centric game. I have no sense of Cazzie Russell's outside shooting ability, for example.
A Beilein-style starting 5 might be Burke, Grant, Stauskas, Rice, Webber. Without a 3-point line, I'd say Grant, Cazzie, Rice, Webber, Tarpley.
March 26th, 2020 at 12:52 PM ^
Good thing this wasn't on the board at Caesar's because I would have bet $1000 I was going to open this link and just see the names of the Fab 5.
I was just going to post this.

It's not easy to evaluate Burke. He's almost the Mike Hart of college basketball (great at that level but maybe less physically gifted and talented than some other guys).
March 26th, 2020 at 12:54 PM ^
Cazzie Russell has to be a lock.
After that it gets really tough, but I'll give it my best shot:
Ricky Green and Gary Grant at the guard positions, Chris Webber and Glen Rice to round out the starting five.
2nd team, if I'm allowed:
Juwan Howard, Jalen Rose, Trey Burke, Rudy Tomjanovich, Phil Hubbard.
Honorable mention: Mo Wagner, Bill Buntin, Roy Tarpley, Terry Mills, Derek Walton, Mitch McGary (if not for his back injuries and fondness for weed, he'd have probably moved up on my list).
I feel like everyone always forgets about Campy Russell.
You guys are all crazy with no Judge!!!!
