It seemed JOK had ample opportunity to tuck and run last night

But seemed to prefer locking on receivers and throwing into coverage instead.

Has the staff cut him off at the knees? He is supposed to be mobile but we really haven't seen it. On a night where getting four yard chunks would have been big it appears the option was entirely eschewed.

Do we put that on JOK himself or the coaches?

He definitely did and refused to take the yards. He had to have been coached on that - it sure looked like it. To top it off our defense then let's a guy ranked lower than Malzone and Gentry run in for TD and then gives up a first down late on a nothing play.

I disagree, O’Korn is not athletic as he and some think he is. His main problem yesterday is that he often got happy feet and ran into trouble instead of eluding the rush and going through his progressions. He locked in on his primary target and forced it or he tried to tuck and run.

I was at the game and was screaming on multiple occasions for him to take off. I don't think the coaches would take that away from him....I think it would have made a difference and if anything would have at least extended a few drives.....

Maybe I missed it if we did, but with O'Korn's mobility rolling the pocket would take advantage of his feet and mask the deficiencies of our OL.

I'm no OL expert, but isn't half the problem that the OL isn't that good and is likely overwhelmed with offensive scheme complications?

Wouldn't asking them to how learn how to move the pocket only make things worse for them?

I agree that JOK had a few plays where he could've picked up 4-7 yards but instead stayed in his receivers.

No, this would inexorably lead to more holding penalties on our line. Asking them to execute a moving pocket is much harder than a stationary pocket. Think MSU’s stupid late game QB sweep instead of taking a knee. They wanted a few extra seconds and ended up with a holding call. Rollouts haven’t been used by anyone at any level with any success since the 80s. Because they are a terrible strategy.

He’s going to get the lowest score ever inUFR. Rainstorm, yes, but that’s all the more reason to tuck and run. He missed 3-4 chances for very big pickups, two of which he threw shitty little shovel passes instead.

I think it's been coached out of him. I remember the Spring game last year where he would run as soon as he took the snap. He now stays in the backfield for better or worse. He still looks just as jittery. I think that's coaching.

On when to run, and when to stay in the pocket, was painful. Scrambling on 3rd and long when there is just a few yards of grass killed drives. Throwing the ball out of bounds on the fade route to DPJ. 3 ints. Didn’t use the athletes around him at all.

Yes, he had opportunities to do so. This seems to be what we do. We get a mobile qb and try to turn him into a pocket passer. While all the top schools who have been dominant over the pass 10 years have moved to QBs who can get out of the pocket and make plays. Name a NC in the last 10 years that didn’t have a qb that could keep a play alive and get you 4-5 yards. Do you see what Clemson is doing?? If you can’t beat them, join them mentality has to set in at some point. We need to stop celebrating our history and start making our own new history and put this offense into the 21st century.

I don't think Harbaugh is trying to take our QB's legs away.  More likely he's trying to coach them about when to use their legs and when rely on their arm in the pocket, and they just aren't getting it.  Harbaugh likes mobile QBs.  He WAS one.  And he made good use of Kaepernick and Luck too.  Speight and O'Korn just don't have it in them to judge when to do one and when to do the other.

The shame of it is that two of his picks were easy first downs instead, if he just kept running.

O'Korn has his limits but we are stuck with them now that Speight is out.

One thing I do think we can take advantage of is his running.  We should put in some zone read option and let him put some pressure on a defense with his legs, ala Lewerke.

He's not going to do it with just his passing.

was always considered the achilles heel. He runs when he should pass and he passes when he should run. You saw that in his earlier outings. And that also goes to lack of fundamentals. Staying in the pocket, stepping up in the pocket, going through your progressions..a lot of college QBs never get that down. He's one of em. At this point in his career that's not gonna be fixed.

How much of that is the fault of the coaches and how much of it is his own..who knows. Truth is that no-one but O'Korn can control what happens in his head in the two or three seconds after that ball is snapped.

JOK has always had a tendency to take off when he shouldn't.  He even did so last night a couple times when the protection was there, but he flushed himself out and started running around.  I am sure the coaches are trying to iron out that tendency from him.  And then he swings to the other extreme sometimes, holding on to the ball and not taking off when he should.

My feeling is that JOK just hasn't yet figured out how to judge when to take off and when not to.  With as much experience as he's had already, maybe he never will.

This was the worst thing about Denard Robinson too. Cost is so many games because he literally had zero awareness to know when to run on a passing play. He could only run on designer run plays. So many missed opportunities. Okorn missed a few yesterday. Agreed.

for fear of him getting injured with one qb down already in the season. To me, that was the difference in the game. Lewerke ran, to great effect, and O'Korn didn't. Someone should have asked Harbaugh at the presser whether O'Korn was cautioned by the coaches not to take off when the opportunity presented itself.
