It's worth remembering the 2007 Michigan-MSU game

Submitted by Erik_in_Dayton on
[argh - major spacing problems - sorry] To refresh everyone's memories, Michigan entered that game having defeated the Spartans every year since 2001 (the extra-second game at MSU), albeit often in tough games. It was Dantonio's first year in East Lansing, and State fans hoped his championship pedigree (DC of 2002 OSU) and open disdain for Michigan would turn the rivalry................................................... As we're reminded every year, the winner of the Michigan-MSU game is almost always the team that wins the rushing battle. In 2007, MSU out-rushed Michigan by a wide margin. They rode this and home field advantage to a 24-14 lead late in the fourth quarter. I remember their running back, Jehuu Caulcrick, dancing on the sidelines as if his team finally had the Michigan monkey off its back..................................................... But Michigan was not quite done dominating the Spartans. The game turned, Dantonio said afterward, when the Spartans blitzed Ryan Mallett and caused him to fumble, a success they could only enjoy for a moment as Mike Hart recovered the fumble and ran something like 15 yards for a first down. Chad Henne then re-entered the game, and the Michigan coaches realized they needed to turn him loose. He proceeded to throw two TD passes in the final 6:47 and carve MSU's heart out on the way to a 28-24 win............................................................... We all know how the rivalry changed after that. And while it's not a perfect apples-to-apples comparison, yesterday felt a lot like 2007 to me. We had one coach many years into building his program that's been doing a lot of winning vs. a coach in his first year who's made major improvements but who still has some kinks to work out. We also saw the team that rushed for the most yards (admittedly a difference of only four) lose. Again, the analogy isn't without flaw, but I think it works pretty well. And I'll take Jim Harbaugh and what Michigan offers over Dantonio and MSU in the long run any day. My point, then, is that we can see yesterday as a beginning rather than an end despite how painful it was in the moment.............................................. I remember Dantonio saying after the 2007 game something like "It's not over - it's never over." I had to admit that I liked that, and I think we can say the same thing today. MSU has had Michigan's number. They had an amazing moment yesterday. But the worm turned yesterday even if it didn't turn all the way around................................................. Finally, if you'll indulge me, I want to join the chorus of people calling for calm with respect to Blake O'Neill. We as a fanbase have made it through a phantom touchdown in the Rose Bowl, a Hail Mary, a time out that wasn't, and a Horror. But we stick together as the roller coaster goes up and down, and Michigan always comes back. Turning the poor kid into Bill Buckner isn't going to do anything but poison the athletic program we love so much, so let's show him our kindness........ Go Blue!

MSU did turn it around and finished the season strong after that game. You can't ignore the similarities. Lloyd Carr was actually in his 13th year in 2007, not his 9th BTW.

Needs to start going up soon. Because we are all about to die by hitting the ground. These last 10 years or so have just been so brutal to be a Michigan fan. We've made it to the NCAA title games in both hockey and basketball but lost, and one Rose Bowl, but lost. Still wouldn't change it for anything. Love this university and always will.

Fresh perspective the next day. Future is bright in Ann Arbor under Harbaugh. Also, all those who want to Internet attack a college athlete can go stick their head in a toilet and flush. Go Blue!

No matter how hard you wish for it to be, Mark Dantonio isn't John L. Smith or Bobby Williams. The one-side domination in this series that Michigan fans started regarding as their birthright won't return as long as Dantonio is coach in EL. Harbaugh has already gotten us competitive, but bravely asserting that we'll never lose again to him is whistling past the graveyard.

His rant was bitchy then and it's bitchy now. His indignance over Michigan's mocking of his mocking was victimhood at its worst, and there simply isn't a personality type I loathe more than the perpetual outraged victim. Fuck Dantonio, always and forever. He may still have built a powerful program regardless, but he wouldn't be 7-2 vs Michigan now if Michigan hadn't self-destructed.

Agreed.  His perpetual victimhood is pathetic and the worse.  It kills me that it's been validated the way it has been.  Of his 7 wins, six came against Michigan coaches named Rodriguez and Hoke, and his seventh was the result of arguably the flukiest play in college football history.  I don't expect him to be getting any more.

Between us, my fantasy, and my pick em league, if the Pats somehow lose tonight there will be a Bleach Drinking party at DMT's house. Will provide address if the party is on.

But yeah, games aren't analagous all that much, but there have been wild finishes on both sides in this rivalry. It happens in every rivalry. We've been blessed with a lot of crazy finishes in the Big House (Braylonfest, UTL1, Illinois Chaos party), so it sucks when it goes the other way. Blake has been one of our best assets this year and easily our best punter since Mesko. No one should bash him ever, especially after that fluke play. It happens. He's done more for this year's team than anyone's keyboard has.

I thought the same thing last night. The team has grown up a lot this year and I expect us to beat them in their house next year - looking forward to it!

I thought of this game all week, pretty much all season, I figured me might lose in close fashion, ala henne to manningham. MSU senior laden, experience, years of stability, compared to us, up and coming, etc. Man, I was right on the close loss, just not the gut wrenching type.

They had a video moment remembering that game yesterday during. TV timeout. I told my sister that's the game that turned this series on a dime. Of course lots of other variables have played into that.

How ironically we will travel to East Lansing next year...as MSU traveled to Ann Arbor in 2008 to get that monkey of their back. They will have the unproven commodity at QB (Threet/Sheridan anybody)...

If you don't think Harbaugh will have this team lasered in on that game next year...you are crazy!

Cook is a top ten pick this coming April. Jake will be lucky to get invited to a camp as a free agent in all likelihood. Add in the fact of the number of players they had on pre-season All America and Todd McShay type guru watch lists and the analogy is even more appropriate. I laughed all week at the pre-game injury excuse talk from Sparty fans. If you have a coach who hasn't built a quality bench after 8 years on the job, you don't have a coach. And we all know the jerk can coach. They are further along than Michigan program wise as far as talent development. A lot further. Jim will narrow that gap faster than probably anyone else alive could though.

The difference between 2007 and yesterday though is in 2007, we beat sparty and left with the win. Yesterday, we beat sparty and left with an L. The moral of the story? We beat sparty despite the final outcome. That game last night told me that though we lost on a fluke, our team isn't one. We're for real and for 59:50 we punched one of the best teams in the conference right in the mouth and didn't flinch. Harbaugh has done a phenominal job with this program...already and I'm VERY excited about what the future holds for us. GO BLUE!!

may possibly be the best punter Michigan has ever had. I choose to believe we will have a couple wins because of him. Not only that, buy we also would not have had the two point lead to lose without him. Hating on that kid would be like hating on Anthony Thomas for his fumble against Northwestern. Blake O'Neill: You are among the best at what you do. Hail! Go Blue!

BON is really damn good and he made a mistake like everyone else in life. Bottom line is that we had our chances to put Staee away even in spite of poor officiating. We have up some big plays and could not run or pass as effectively as necessary. It remains a team loss with the refs also assisting The Spartoons. Next year we crush little brother.
