Iowa's low expectation contract amendment for OC Brian Ferentz

Submitted by Ezekiels Creatures on February 6th, 2023 at 7:30 PM

Firstly, there's a pay cut of $50,000.00:

And here's the expectations:

How do these expectations compare to what other teams are doing?

There's a lot I could post about Iowa fan reaction to Brian Ferentz. But I'll just post these 2 tweets. If you want to see what fans are saying, look it up. You'll find big lots! Just know that sharp objects need to be kept away from them.

Holy nepotism, Batman.

Kind of incredible, really, when you think of all of the talented up-and-coming OCs out there who would likely jump at a chance to take a P5 job.  Incredible that the performance "incentive" is for him to finish in about the top 70% of his profession, when he starts by being gifted with a top 25 defense every year, and a top 10 defense many years.

If you don't follow Iowa football closely, you won't understand just how much sway Kirk has with the Iowa leadership. The fact that Brian had to take a pay cut and have even wimpy goals sounds silly, but Kirk is the 4th most winningest coach (B1G conf wins) behind only Woody-Bo-Stagg.

This is really an audition for his job in 2024. I wouldn't be shocked if Gattis is hired as an analyst knowing he might get the OC job if Iowa has another year like the last two.

I do think if Cade is healthy and Erick is even decent, they will eclipse the 25 points goal even without help from the D.

Hope to see them in Indy after our 3rd straight win vs. Ohio.

So glad I didn't go to school there, so glad I'm not a fan of that school, and so glad I don't live in Iowa. Lol!!!

Smartest person in the state is Ferentz's lawyer, and second smartest is Kirk for hiring him.

Omg 25 points per game.

I literally giggled. Then I felt bad for Iowa fans while imagined how pissed off I would be.

Then I thought Cade what are you doing there?  Did they lie to you or do you see yourself as a system game manager?

And we still may see them in Indianapolis if their D performs like last season.

right on cue, Scott Bell's flamethrower.....

People are laughing at the 25 points per game threshold. But Michigan State OC Jay Johnson recently received a raise to $1,350,000/year and a contract extension into 2025 and he's topped the 25 points per game mark one time in four years as Mel Tucker's offensive coordinator. https://t.co/cmgL1b99Tq

Straight points per game is an odd structure and could potentially cause some weird incentives, since it doesn't take into account number of possessions. Better metric would probably be number of offensive points per possession.

Iowa is truly capping, even sabotaging its potential, by letting Ferentz keep his son around. If that offense modernized even just a little, it would work wonders for them and would raise their ceiling considerably.

You have elite defenses that are being wasted on this clusterfuck offense you’ve put together.

25 ppg???  LMAO!!!  Dude, if you don't score 35 against a team with a pulse, you're probably not winning in today's football!  And only 7 wins?  That's simply pathetic for what Iowa should be able to do in the B1G West.  They should be looking at 10 wins/year, 11 in some years (like 2023 - when they don't play UM or OSU).

What a sad state to be in for a football fan.  I only wish I had an Iowa fan near me so I could hear the pain...

Two points…

First, have you been to Iowa City?  With that salary, he can quite easily live a “royal life”, like a king.

Second, I’m fine with free markets and capitalism.  However, it does reflect how “run away” things have become in salaries.

An arms race has been underway for a generation - which has impacted the cost of obtaining a college education.  There’s no control, and little say, the public has as those costs escalate.

About 40 years ago, Bo turned down an offer of.. $2M for 10 years (IIRC) - to be head coach at Texas A&M.  I know it was a while ago - but, that figure would have been less than 1/4 of what Ferentz is being paid to be a coordinator.

As a public relations move, they would have been better off just not saying or doing anything - that stonewall play has worked so far. This will only raise more issues:

1. If they win and don't hit the point mark, it will be a lightening rod for criticism.

2. If they win and some player gets hurt trying to get over that point mark, it will just look worse.

3. if the defense scores (history suggests they will) the gibes will come out about how it shouldn't count, etc.

In effect they're making a deal to pay less to get less., should things not improve.

That's an approach you can take when you're determined to stick with someone.

The timing of this makes me think Brian Ferentz tried and failed to find a comparable job elsewhere--which is no surprise given his lack of production. It seems the only way he was going to be replaced was if he found a face-saving job elsewhere.

This contract was them drawn up to keep him around with hopes of providing the AD some cover.

Guess he'd better run the score up where he can to offset the ***kickings later in the season and put them in the best position possible to be moderately entertaining and mediocre.

It was mentioned on WTKA this morning that the 25 pts per game also includes the defense scoring points as well. It appears this is a net 25 PPG and not just an offense stat.

If Cade and Eric All can't get it done over there next season then there is a bigger problem over at Iowa City.

For the record I firmly expect that this won't happen, but...  let's say that Iowa's offence with Cade Mac as the presumptive starter is EVEN WORSE than it was this year.

Who will that say the most about??
