Interesting stat: Alabama and Georgia have two of the worst passing offenses in the country

Submitted by Maizen on

Alabama #101 182 YPG

Georgia #111 171 YPG

Michigan #94 191 YPG

Both have top 10 rush offenses however. Seems like the key to success for UM going forward will be to commit to the run game. 271 yards against IU on the ground is a good start.

that the difference between the no. 9 (Georgia for 9.0 yards) and no. 77 YPA (Michigan for 7.0 yards) stat is just 2.0 yards per attempt.

If M can just improve its YPA by just 1.0 measly YPA--from 7.0 to 8.0 (Alabama no. 35 at 8.0 YPA)--that would totally transform Michigan from a totally dysfunctional offense to a good enough offense to win the rest of the games, given the elite D.

If Michigan's passing game can just be mediocre (no. 35ish level) several things will happen:  Sacks will drop (fewer 3rd and long with D blitzing), running game will be much better (PA pass will have to be respected, etc.), and they will also have the ability to sustain drives (like in 2016), control the clock, keep D rested, etc., etc., etc.

A virtuous cycle.

M is a lot closer to being a top 10 team than many realize-- just 1.0 YPA better and we are there!

Yet if O'Korn can't improve even just a little in the passing game, it won't happen (at least not this year).

People don't realize this, but the SEC is complete garbage. Beating bad teams with a history of being good is what's propping up Alabama and Georgia. Don't get. me wrong, Bama is good, but playing shit teams every week gave them a false sense of security last year, and that's why Clemson got them. I really believe the B1G is better than that conference, from top to bottom.

They got credit, and still do for beating up on a shitty SEC. They didn't lose the lose game on the last play. They lost the game because they weren't as good as everyone propped them up to be. If they were so great, it wouldn't have come down to the last play. Who is the best team they have beaten in the last 2 years?  So Cal to start last season off? Florida St to start this season off? Maybe Washington in the playoff? I'm not saying they aren't good, but playing against a bad conference (Big 2 little 8 days) makes those bowl games a little more difficult.

Stats can be misleading. Both Georgia and Alabama have largely bludgeoned their opponents to death this season so by halftime there was almost no need to throw the ball. Also, when your bread and butter is clearly running the ball and no one can stop you, why deviate from that?

Not to mention that both Georgia and Alabama are putting up a shitload of points against their opponents early in the games both through the air and on the ground. This means that they do not need to throw the ball in the 2nd half much, if at all. Plus, when needed, their QBs are more than capable of completing a downfield pass, or a slant, or even reading through their progressions... hell, they can probably even throw a serviceable fade route.
