Indiana Coaches with Michigan Ties

Four (3 alumni, 1 ex-coach) members of Indiana's coaching staff have University of Michigan football ties:

  • Mike Hart, RB coach
  • Chris Allen, "Athletic Performance Coach" previously served as a strength and conditioning assistant to Mike Barwis under Rich Rod from 2008-2010
  • Nick Sheridan, 1st year Offensive Coordinator and QB coach
  • Aaron Wellman, "Senior Assistant Athletic Director for Football Performance" (strength and conditioning coach) was formerly Brady Hoke's Strength and Conditioning Coach from 2011-2014 (personal experience, I would never wish on my worst enemy being forced to workout with this guy)

Fortunately for us none of these guys "WRECKED OUR PROGRAM" so I wouldn't expect much bad blood.

Not even close.    Allen is solid.  Won't recruit as well as Hoke, but the team would be sound.

Was never a big fan of the S&C guys, nothing wrong with them just nothing of note spectacular.  It's always cool to have a big name former player, so it sounds cool to get a guy like Hart, but I know his history of JH is not great.  Is he respected as a good coach and recruiter?

I think he’s received a few recruiting awards for his work. In fact, I creeped on his athletic dept page, and he’s earned a ton of accolades as he’s moved up the coaching tree

I'd love to see him come back and coach at UM in some capacity.  I'm not sure if he's ready to be a coordinator or HC at a blue blood, but maybe a position coach and co-coordinator.  I can live with JH's recruiting class rankings and 9.5 wins per year, but we have to do a better job against OSU, ranked teams in general, and in bowl games.  JH has had top 10ish classes, but they seem to be more so based on volume rather than average and we seem to have lots of misses and too many gaps like DT & CB now.  Before that it was safety, RB, & o-line.  I can be happy with being like UGA or PSU who wins at about the same rate.  They are still a notch below Bama & OSU in their respective conferences.  But, they are more competitive with them than we are and actually beat them every once in a while.  We have the unfortunate reality of being everyone's rival so we get everyone's best.  I don't know anyone else that has 3 rivals.  But, we need a better staff & system.  I can't remember the last time we had a functional offense with an above average QB or a defense that doesn't get shredded by OSU.  The closest we came was 2016 with all of Hoke's players.  I don't know what the answer is, but JH doesn't seem to be it.  I'd be happy to see Hart on the staff in some capacity even if he's not ready for the HC yet.

The running back position has largely been a mess since Mike Hart left Michigan. Glad Nick Sheridan found success doing something football related, too bad he couldn't be successful at Michigan.

My history with Michigan started A-Train—>Perry—>Hart. Yeah, Askew was in there for a year at tailback before Perry could really get it going but he was also a beast that year.

I thought Minor was going to continue the legacy (before Carr retired). And man, it’s really been the wilderness since then.

Toussaint had a good year one time. De’Veon Smith and Higdon looked good but no one has really been a hammer, except for the Hammering Panda.

I get that feature backs are a relic of the past and I don’t mind having a Thunder and Lightning duo, but I am leery of this four RB rotation where no one gets into a rhythm.

What's the issue with Wellman? I know he was pretty average in terms of his time at UM, is there something else there?

Mike Hart got a stint at EMU when Ron English was the HC. Hart has slowly moved up the ranks.

Mike Hart also said that one day, he'd like to be HC at Michigan.

As for Mike getting a position at Michigan, he seemed to passed over by both Brady Hoke and now Harbaugh over the years. Harbaugh has his son coaching the running backs, so that's a dead end for Hart. I'd love to see Mike Hart return back to Michigan.
