There were pics of him taking shots in the shootaround.

Good, but the suddenly-annoying Illini fanbase will still use it as an excuse.  "he was rusty, he was hesitant about contact, etc. etc."

I am confused.  Do you get rusty from taking so time off or is it an advantage ala the M pause?  So many angles of excuses available for the Illini fan base.

Just Win Baby!!!  (R.I.P. Mr Davis)

EDIT - even more confused given the excellent excuse list provided by Bluefish further below.  Almost enough for a Bingo card...

Marty Mush works for Barstool lol. Check your sources next time. Not to mention that it's been 3 hours since this was tweeted and no official sources have confirmed it. The longer it goes without being confirmed, the less likely it's probably true. Barstool also has a sportsbook and has an incentive to put out unsubstantiated news to affect how people bet

Maybe a (nearly) clever attempt to combine "scUM" and "UM Walmart" fan?

That Walmart thing is doubly curious. Though Notre Dame is famous for its "subway alumni," Michigan is apparently not allowed any fans except graduates.

In addition, the would-be sneer at those of us low-life enough to shop at big box stores jangles in juxtaposition with the sneer that we're arrogant. Low class arrogance? Arrogantly shabby?

I wish those determined to snark at us would get their stories straight so that I know what I should be ashamed of.

Interesting...unless he's ready to go, not sure why you risk his face right now. They've got something like a 1% chance at winning the conference and given that, Illinois is essentially playing for a deep tournament run so bringing Ayo back just because your coach is feeling really grumpy about this game being rescheduled doesn't make much sense

I would bet if they win this game they lock up a 1 seed, barring a terrible loss in the B1G tourney, so there is is something to play for.

A 1 versus 2 seed is pretty small difference in the grand scheme (certainly not worth further injuring your star), but hey, you'd rather be a 1 seed if you can get it.

I'm glad he gets to play because it was a bit of a cheap shot that knocked him out, but (a) playing your first game with a mask is likely going to be a choppy affair, and (b) he's not really at "full strength" because of the mask, so I'm sure an Illini loss will be tainted by that as well.

They'll still make excuses.

He didn't play for two games.

He's not in game shape.

They've played more games.

We've played less games.

We got three weeks off to rest.

We got to choose which games to reschedule.

We ducked Penn St.

We should've played them on 2/14.

Mercury is in retrograde.

The mgoblog redesign sucks.

Lovie left the cupboard bare.

We don't take the rivalry seriously enough.

Take your pick.

Amazing - so following things happened:

  • Coach goes out of his way to let everyone know Big10 Championship doesn't mean anything this year  - Covid covid covid
  • Coach goes out of his way to let everyone know Big10 & Michigan creatively scheduled around playing Illinois immediately and did not reschedule powerhouses such as Nebraska
  • Coach goes out of his way to let everyone know his player's safety is paramount and reiterating Big10 Championship doesn't mean anything again and safety is only concern
  • Fast forward to game-day
    • Injured player is now playing
      • MAYBE Big10 Championship "means" something
      • MAYBE coach is full of same BS that typically is known best for coming from East Landfill??

And this is why you always double check your sources, or I guess just dont believe that some guy named Marty working Barstool has the scoop
