I've seen a couple of bowl projections with us playing LSU or Auburn

Submitted by Patrick_Star on October 5th, 2020 at 5:08 AM

This is the first post that I've created here so, thank you for the upvotes.  Now, please don't beat me up when I say that I'm not expecting huge things for our team this year.  With that said, I'll be happy playing in a January 1st bowl against someone like LSU or Auburn.  I believe those are beatable opponents and getting a win to finish the season would set us up nicely for the 2021 season.  We should have a ton of players returning and we'll get tOSU at home and they'll have a new QB and a bunch of other new faces.  To me, though, we gotta find a way to finish the season on a winning note by beating an SEC team in a bowl.

How about it?

I know the CFP are still a-go (for now). I haven't heard much about bowl games, other than "potential" match-ups. Are bowl games legitimately on the table? There are so many questions. Bowl games basically exist to line the pockets of the bowl committee and bring dollars to the host city. Are either of those possible this year? Could you have fans? Would people travel to bowl games? Would there be entertainment in the host cities? If the trend is for players to opt out of bowls during normal years, how much would that increase this year? Would teams/players be willing to risk possible more exposure during the peak of flu season, for an essentially "worthless" game", knowing that the experience for them and the school is greatly diminished? What college student would want to go to Pasadena for a week if he couldn't leave his hotel room, except to practice? Keep in mind, that all other fall championships have been postponed. If the NCAA was able to get a football season in, with a CFP, that would be considered a HUGE win. It might be unreasonable to push for anything more.

Yes, yes, I know. We haven't played one game yet, and we don't know what Milton looks like, but the point of these projections is to just stimulate conversation and have healthy debates.

Honestly, I'd be okay with Auburn. Malzahn has a pretty terrible bowl record too, I think like 2-5 record. The lone wins coming against Purdue and I think Memphis. So Michigan might actually be able to sneak in a W on those guys.

After reading this thread, it’s clear that the events of 2020 have taken the normal pre-season rose colored glasses from Mgobloggers and crushed them in the shredder.

I think this is doable. As long as they hit the bowl win requirement (shouldn't be too hard to hit) they'll get a New Year's Day bowl draw for the TV audience alone. Finishing out the season on a high note is a must but I'd also love for them to steal the PSU game at home. We accomplish those 2 things, 2021 will look more promising.

Steal the PSU game?

I'm not going to pretend PSU is a bad team by any stretch. They beat Michigan last year, but I think you've got to give Michigan a little more credit.

Michigan's only way of beating PSU isn't by "stealing" the game. These guys can go toe-to-toe with Penn State and beat them. If you were talking about OSU, then yeah I'd say our only real chance is by stealing the game somehow. But Penn State isn't on some other level from Michigan. Michigan can absolutely beat those guys.

I mean sure, Michigan is a big name, unlikely to make the CFP or one of the big bowls, so a Jan 1st decent-but-not-great bowl game against a decent-but-not-great SEC team is probably a pretty safe prediction in most years before they've even played a game.

This season is so fluid due to Covid-19 that it should be taken week to week. No problem with bowl projections but let's just wait and see.

Unless something changes drastically it doesn't seem likely there will be the normal bowls this year. I believe the locations that host most of the bowls have the primary incentive of boosting tourism. The current circumstances of limited attendance and the fear of having large numbers of people from all over the country come and congregate in a city would seem to make it less likely the cities will want to host bowl games this year.

Out of curiosity, I checked Winsipedia to see the history of Michigan vs OK St. It's pretty sparse—just two games.

http://www.winsipedia.com/oklahoma-state/vs/michigan

I remember the '92 game here in A2; it wasn't much of a contest as M won 35-3.

The other game was played way back in 1926 when it was Oklahoma A&M, and look who the Aggies head coach was: Johnny Maulbetsch, one of Coach Yost's own heroes of a decade earlier (and namesake of the John F. Maulbetsch Award).

As public attention focused on Maulbetsch as "the greatest line-plunger of a decade," the press could not get enough of Maulbetsch, even interviewing his family. His sister revealed that Maulbetsch had a fondness for home cooking and received permission from the team trainer to eat at his family's Ann Arbor home. "Now, Johnny's sister explains that each day his mother baked two pies for the athlete's supper, and that in addition he had everything else his appetite craved, including coffee."

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Maulbetsch

I can totally get behind a training diet of pie and coffee.

Because its fun or interesting to talk about? Healthy debates?

Fun to think about possible matchups with teams we've either never played or haven't played in a long time?

Because its about Michigan football?

Because anything, and dear god I mean ANYTHING that is sports-related is better to talk about than effing COVID, the Michigan Supreme Court, the current state of affairs in our nation's capital, etc. We've all gotten more than enough of the that on this board in the last five months or so, so I will happily take talking about premature bowl projections unless you've got a better idea. I'm all ears, friend.

I don't really care about the substance of your post—expressing one's own opinions, for better or worse, is why the board exists in the first place.

That said, two reliable ways to get downvotes are:

A) Assume you'll get upvotes simply because it's your first time. First posts are generally like first fucks—you're very excited and there's a lot of flailing around and it feels really good for a short period of time, but in reality you're probably pretty lousy at it initially.

B) Beg for gentle treatment because of your opinions. If you're going to go to the trouble of posting in the first place, own your opining completely. Don't apologize or temporize.

I'm not going to lie, I'm sick and tired of playing SEC teams in bowl games. I would MUCH rather face a solid B12 team. I would love to see how we faired against a conference that's known around the B1G to ignore the defensive side of the ball.

Would we be able to keep up with the high powered B12 offenses? Could our defense stop them? I think that would be a far more interesting matchup.
