Hypothetical Nightmare for CFP

Submitted by A2MIKE on
Notre Dame wins out, finishes 11-1. Ohio State wins out finishes 12-1. Clemson wins out finishes 12-1. Georgia/Bama go undefeated into SEC champ. Washington wins out, finishes 12-1. Oklahoma wins out, finishes 12-1. Who gets left out? I would think ND, Georgia and Bama might be locks in that scenario.

What everyone else said, but I’ll play: in that scenario, loser of Bama-Georgia is first left out. They’ve already been beaten by winner, so spent their “playoff” loss

Ideally, you are right. You are only seeking to determine the "best team". But a playoff is just an arbitrary format to allow a single winner to claim that.

In an ideal world where it really was purely about determining the best team in America, if there was only 1 (or 2, or 3) teams with a clear legitimate claim at #1, they would exclude all others. If there is only one team who is clearly the best by the end of the first week of December, you'd declare that team National Champion there and then (kind of like the old poll system), They would only play a playoff when there is any doubt.

(At this point in 2017, most would say that "best" is clearly Alabama, and everyone else lags behind- it's really more a question about what other three teams 'deserve have any chance of beating them).

Howver, TV money means this would never happen. So in reality we are stuck at an arbitrary number of teams of the "top" number (whether that's 4, 6, 8, 12 or 16) where in many years worthy teams will be excluded, and/or unworthy teams are included.

Pecking order is probably something like:

Undefeated SEC champion

Undefeated Miami

One loss Oklahoma

One loss Big Ten champion or undefeated Wisconsin

One loss ACC Champion

Notre Dame

One loss SEC champion

One loss Big 12 champion that is not Oklahoma

One loss PAC-12 champion

One loss UGA/Alabama SECCG lose

ND, Georgia and Bama would be fine by me. ND is not getting by either of those two. OSU is who concerns me. They’d easily beat ND, and I don’t think Georgia is at their level yet.

Bama would be a tossup.

Agreed, but the committee will be dying for a Saban-Meyer matchup. I could see both of them making it in though.

Not inconceivable for the following:

1) Winner of UGa/Bama conference title game

2) Oklahoma

3) OSU

4) Clemson

ND is on the outside looking in, as is PSU and TCU. If the loser of the SEC title game loses a very close game by seven or less (and assuming they are undefeated in regular season) they can still make it in as a possible 3-4 seed.

The CFP group wants OSU in bad.  They pull a huge fan base for viewing on tv and in person.  There is a reason they were choosen for the 1st playoff over TCU when it was said to be a "toss up".  Any time there is a chance they will let OSU in, OSU will get in, unfortunately.

schedules...

Ohio State would have beaten maybe only two ranked teams, Penn State and Wisconsin.  Penn State should finish as a Top 10, Wisconsin might be on the fringe.

Oklahoma would have beaten Ohio State, Oklahoma State, and TCU, which could be 3 Top 15 wins.

Washington would likely have a ranked win over Wazzu and perhaps USC, who both would be low Top 25.

Clemson would have ranked wins over Auburn, Virginia Tech, NC State, and Miami, along with being the defending champs if  that means anything.

I really think a lot would hinge on the quality of the SEC title game.  If it were to be a blowout in a really dominating fashion, I think the loser is left out.  It really gets interesting if that game comes down to the wire, late field kind of thing.

For now, I would lean Alabama, Oklahoma, Ohio State, Clemson.

OSU could win out and still easily be left out of the CFP.

They will be left out for a 1 loss Big 12 champion, because of OU.

They will be left out for a 1 loss Notre Dame, there is pent up demand to put ND in.

They will be left out for the SEC champion, because SEC.

And finally, they will be left out for a 1 loss Clemson because of what happened last year in the CFP.

They are very vulnerable in a way that Penn State would not have been if they had won out.
