Honest Opinion - Chase Young

Submitted by FrankTigers2 on November 8th, 2019 at 5:59 PM

At first, I was giddy.   Star OSU player getting in trouble.  You were all probably excited

if it was a criminal case, screw him, screw anOSU.  Totally expected.

But seeing that it APPEARS TO BE a loan (or even a gift) given to an athlete that OSU, B1G and the NCAA routinely take advantage of, amassing huge profit, I say screw the NCAA.

And if they used the $ to pay for his parents to go to his game, then screw the NCAA again.

stupid NCAA rules...pay the f@cking kids!

and also screw anOSU

My first thought when I heard about this, given the sociopolitical overtones and the current national climate surrounding ethics and college sports was, frankly...

...fuck Ohio State

Well, yes. You should follow the governing rules whether you agree or not. Because those are the rules. If you don’t like it, work within the system to change those rules (as many athletes are doing by suing for name and likeness rights).

And when other so follow the rules, and you don’t, because you don’t like the rules, you obtain an unfair advantage.

Not debating the validity of the rule but when some follow and others choose not to - without real consequences - you get a situation like what currently exists where teams like OSU, Clemson, Bama and a few others enjoy an unfair advantage that is almost impossible to overcome for those that play within the rules.

That's the thing.

That's what's being "publicly stated".

More than likely there was A LOT of money that changed hands, and this is the "slap on the wrist" that they are pinning on them.

We all know when an officer writed you ticket for "5 MPH Over The Limit" that you absolutely were doing much more over the limt (closer to 15+ MPH over).

This is how the law works (it's pragmatic, not truthful) plea bargains, and reduced charges for cooperation save everyone time, money, and patience.

There's like this weird thing where human beings fudge, bargain, and tell white lies literally every single hour of their waking lives, but when they read the news they all of a sudden become literalists.

Michigan football got raked across the coals for getting countable practice hours wrong.  I'll shed no tears for OSU losing a player due to something that violates the rules, even if what he did is morally fine and legally going to be okay in the near future.

If it’s a loan and agains the rules, he should be ineligible.  He won’t miss the Michigan game!  We already know it unless this welcomes the NCAA in and they find more.  It wont, they won’t,

He is going to get his money, and the NCAA is making money off of him right now. I really think the whole situation is overblown and I do really not care personally if he is suspended at all. It's not like their back up, whoever it is, isnt a 4-5 star monster waiting in the wings.

Don't ever take anything that's said by anyone affiliated with that institution as anything but 90% horse shit.

The 10% that's truthful includes comments like "we ain't come to play school".

The loan was from an AGENT. Save us from the evil corporation bullshit. It’s against the fucking rules.

This is a bunk situation. Here we have a guy who will be inking a $40M deal in less than a year having to borrow a few bucks to get his family to a game. He pays back the loan and now he is forced to sit out at least a game, perhaps more.

I don’t care that he plays for our mortal enemies. He plays a big role in making OSU money and honestly, stars like him make the Big Ten money so by extension we all profit from his presence on the field.

The NCAA sucks and I hope they make this “infraction” a thing of the past.

I'm just going to assume that neither you, nor I, nor probably anyone on this board know what really happened.  Was it a loan?  Was it a gift?  Was a booster paying him because that's what boosters at OSU do?...no idea.  I won't pass judgement on it.  We all know the NCAA sucks and takes advantage of these guys.  What I will do is be happy if this in any way makes OSU worse, makes them lose a game, or helps UM in their game against them.  All I care about is UM beating OSU and OSU not getting into the playoffs.

From an agent/friend he met in columbus immediately after moving there.  OSU will make this about Chase Young because people will be sympathetic towards him.  However, this looks like it is booster organized and likely involves more than just him. JK Dobbins has been ghost on twitter since the same time Chase Young has.

Please God, I don't ask for much in this life, or even particularly believe in you for a variety of reasons including but not limited to I think it's bullshit to coerce people into believing in you by threatening eternal torment in fire, but that's besides the point I'm making here.

God, if you're there, please make Chase, JK, and two or three other dudes ineligible for the Michigan game. No, that won't cheapen the victory, are you serious? No, dude, a win's a win.

screw the NCAA? Right there with you on that sentiment.

However.

Chase Young has had an agent - an AGENT - since he was a freshman!  OSU football is a pre NFL machine.  I doubt he's the only one!  Dobbins.  Oh and test for steroids too.

The fact pattern in Young's tweet is designed to put a good face on things, so OSU fans can say OH GEEZ a guy can't even get a cheeseburger without..... yada yada yada.  Yes, the timeline makes it clear that the family friend is an agent, so if this is the best they could come up with?? Look, I have no problem with the isolated fact of payments, or that Young's family probably didn't want for anything during his OSU career.  I do have a problem with this being one of the limited fact patterns that crosses over a hard line which is that college players can't work with professional agents without losing their amateur status.  The NCAA doesn't do much but that is a line they respect and that many schools at least make an effort to appear they respect.  OSU flouts this line almost openly because they want to be Alabama who has a state structure to support their levels of cheating. OSU is also still stinging from being destroyed by Clemson, because in today's CFB world you can't lose a game without the world ending, apparently.

Change the rules.  Until then, if our players can't have agents, they can't have agents.

You sound like my son.

Rules are rules.  Yeah, sometimes they are a little unreasonable but they are meant to keep a fair playing field.

A mistake was made, own up to it, learn from it and move on.  It seems Chase is doing just that. Good for him but still...Fuck OSU.

OK, despite the fact your post sounds like a semi-coherent rant, I'll bite.

The obvious end result of all this will be that the highly-ethical people who run Ohio State will "investigate" this "alleged" violation for a couple weeks.  They will sit Young for two meaningless games.  Then amazingly they'll announce that their "thorough investigation has revealed that there has been no violation of NCAA rules and that he is immediately eligible" - right before their two big games to end the season.  And the NCAA will sign off on this farce because that's what they do with the big programs that generate the big bucks for them.

You could have read the same thing in the previous threads on this, but I thought I'd add it to this thread.

Well they’re dumb rules but they’re the rules at this point in time and I don’t feel bad for people getting caught breaking rules (even dumb ones).
