Here's a ridiculous thought...

Submitted by UESWolverine on

Is there a scenario where Michigan finishes #1 in the country as the National Champion with wins over the #2, #3, #4, #5, #6 and #7 ranked team when the final polls come out?  We already have wins against 3 of the current top 10 -  and they could improve or maintain their rankings as long as they won the rest of their games (except for Wisconsin in the B1G Championship game if we played them). It's crazy to even consider - and I don't care who we have to play to get there, but the reality is that we'd have to play 4 of the next 5 games against teams ranked #7 or higher to win the NC. So it potentially could happen, no?

Why do you bloggers say "Focus on the next game"? Where our focus goes has no effect on how the team performs. We are fans, and we are allowed to speculate and talk about possible scenarios. Yes, I know that no matter how many times a level headed person makes this point, you idiots are still going to do it.

I'm in the opposite camp.  I think that the thoughts of the fanbase, especially as expressed on a message forum like MGoBoard have about zero effect on the outcome of upcoming games.  Especially when expressed, as the OP does, as a hypothetical.

Are we getting ahead of ourselves talking NC scenarios?  Arguably.  Will John O'Korn perform more or less ably because a group of fans were talking about paths to the championship?  I don't see it.

(I tend to focus on the next game for my own mental health - keeps my expectations in check and makes the game more fun for me to watch and less devastating when Michigan has an occasional gack like Saturday night.  But my focus has jack-shit to do with player performance on gameday.)

Virtually impossible
The champ doesn't play the loser of the other semifinal and the chance we would have already played in the regular season would be very low (maybe Colorado I guess)
Sorry if I missed sarcasm in original post

So the six teams would be the two we beat in the playoffs, CU, OSU, Wisky and PSU?

As pointed out, Wisky would have another loss under this scenario which could push them out of the top 7.

While unlikely, iIt is possible that OSU or PSU could also make the playoff.  But, the problem being that if CU doesn't make the playoff, they'd probably be playing one of the B1G teams we beat in the Rose Bowl.  Not sure the loser of that tilt stays in the top 7.

So yeah, CU making the playoff, losing the other semi but remaining in the top 7 is likely the only way this could happen.
