Hello: Tyler Inge 2024 Shortstop/2B

Submitted by rob f on June 18th, 2021 at 11:59 AM

I just saw this on the Twitters

https://twitter.com/TylerInge7/status/1405592100813557762?s=19

Son of Brandon Inge, he plays right now for Detroit Country Day.  I looked at a couple websites for his rankings, it appears he's a good college prospect with the potential to develop further.  Here's one of the websites, they rank him as a 7 on a scale of 10:

Welcome to Michigan, Tyler!

How am I supposed to appropriately adjust my levels of excitement and disappointment when differentiating between hundreds of prospects on a 1-10 scale?

Not knowing and not caring about whatever "-gasms" float your boat, I'll leave that up to you to figure out.

But if you look at the website, in particular where you see him rated as a "7", you can click on a button "About PG Grades"  and see an explanation of their rating system.

It’s cool that the sons of some of the beloved players of my generation are now coming up through the ranks -Inge, Vlad Jr., Biggio, Bichette, Tatis, Daz Cameron, Clemens, Sheffield, etc. As a baseball fan it’s great to watch.

Vinny Johnson, Mike James, Lindsey Hunter.   Is there 1 all star appearance between the 3?  But I loved and appreciated their game.  Same goes for Inge.  Not everyone is HOF material, but guys remain in the game because they have good talent and a lot of guts.  I appreciate that more than uber talented gutless players.  When they lose a step no amount of intestinal fortitude can make up for physical breakdown.  At the end of his career Inge was playing on bad knees.

I remember Inge being one of the most polarizing players to wear the old English D. He complained and moaned when Pudge was signed and he was made the backup. Then when he was at 3rd he complained when Cabrera was signed and he had to move to another position. He tried second for a minute and eventually become a utility backup player. I'm not dogging him, I just don't ever remember him being a fan favorite, or beloved.

Even though he is not a Michigan native Brandon and his wife have done some solid charity work in Michigan - even after he after being released by the TIgers and going to California. But, of course, he can't be beloved by anyone since his batting average wasn't acceptable.

but that's the point.  He could have been great.  He worked hard at doing all the wrong things.  His strengths were his athleticism (which was impressive) and his versatility.

He chose to be a power hitter at a park with a 345 left field line.

He had the potential of being a 285+ hitter with a 375obp if he went palms down drove the ball to right field. .

It's more tragic than anything, and the team paid the price for it.  He could have had a statue in left field.

I agreed with you until your very last sentence.

No way Inge ever would have been memorialized with a statue for hitting .285.  Other than Willie Horton (who no doubt deserves the honor,) those statues are of Tigers in the Baseball HOF, which means Tigers ownership needs to get crackin soon on installing statues of Morris, Tram, and someday Lou, JV, and Miggy.

Yes.  He also had years where he batted over .280, was a swiss army knife (played multiple positions), had over 1100 career hits, led the AL in assists and double plays at 3rd base one year, broke the Tigers single season record for assists by a 3rd baseman (and was 14 short of the MLB record) the next year, ad 3 seasons with over .415 slugging %.

Who gives a shit he didn't hit home runs in an exhibition and finished with a career .233  The guy was a fucking stud at 3rd base for years, lived through the worst of the Tigers in 2003 just to see the best of them in 2006.

Also, he's done a lot for charity, including ChadTough.

So, yea, that Brandon Inge is beloved and always will be, for far more reasons than there are to not like him.

And he’s still done far more than you, as well as thousands and thousands of other guys who played major league baseball.

I list numerous reasons why he’s beloved and you pick out one stat I got technically incorrect because my phone put an ‘s’ at the end of a single word out of an entire short story I posted just to argue.

it seems really odd you’re that bothered that a decent ball player and good human being is beloved by the fans of the team he played for for 12 of his 14 MLB years … people are like “I like that guy.  Love him in fact.” And you keep coming around like “here’s 3 reasons why I think you shouldn’t like him because I don’t.”

I know. I subscribe to the site and follow college baseball recruiting. That's just a generic ranking they tend to give lighter ranked prospects at that young of an age when they perform at a showcase event. He's not one of their top 19 prospects in the state and Michigan is a weaker baseball state. He's more of a top 25 to top 50 prospect in the state. Scholarship money is sparse in baseball, so he's going to be on the lighter end. So, saying he's more of a walk on type for Michigan is accurate (at least at this stage in his prospect status). Most players only get 1/4 scholarship money. He's got a strong arm and good 10 second split times at the showcase event so he'll probably be a 3B like his dad.

He's also a year older than everyone else in his grade. He turns 17 in the fall.

I'm not bashing Inge. There's limited scholarship money in college baseball so you need depth pieces. He might turn into a starter later on in his career at U of M. But, that's where he is as a prospect right now. Plus, Michigan has several really good infielders he'll be competing against for playing time from the 2023 and 2024 classes that are top 350 recruits.

Welcome, Tyler, and thank you, rob f, for the excuse to write again about one of my biggest baseball thrills.

A while back, when the Tigers were trying to catch the Mets for most losses in a season, I was returning to NYC with my family and decided to stop to see a game against the Yankees.

Could we get tickets? Yah. Second row behind home plate. The seats around us, like the stadium, were mostly empty. So were hopes to beat the mighty Yankees.

But Brandon Inge hits a walk-off home run! Sooooo exciting.

Not to be "that guy" --- but I think the 2003 game you were at was against the Angels, not the Yankees.

Inge rather incredibly only hit 1 home run in 11 seasons as a Tiger, in games at Comerica Park against the Yankees.  That HR came in 2008 in a game the Tigers trailed at the time 11-2 (lost 13-9).

The above is kind of a crazy stat in its own right.

Hoping he realizes that he isn't a power hitter unlike his old man.. . .

loved Brandon, but he could have been our Jeter if he would focused on hitting to all fields.

Inge has plenty of time to grow and develop before reaching U of M. He's now a 5'11” 155 lb freshman.

For reference purposes, I was 5'8" 135lbs as a freshman; four years later I was 6'1” 165 lbs.

So while I have no idea what the growth genes are on his mom's side of the family, this kid will obviously be a better and somewhat bigger athlete by the time he gets on campus. In the meantime he has a dad who's also a coach and he undoubtedly will be spending time along the way in baseball camps.

Beyond giving a random data point in the universe of possibilities, your post 18 growth spurt anecdote is not a useful piece of info. Most males reach maximum height by 16.  While it is possible Inge grows taller, the odds of him growing 5" are very, very low. Since we're throwing out anecdotes, I reached my max height of just over 6' before my 17th birthday. A similar outcome, 0"of growth post-18, is perhaps the most likely outcome for young Inge.

Of course gaining weight is another story.

I got down-voted for stating a medical statistic and properly applying it. Pathetic.

I had heard he was moving back to Michigan this summer too. That aside, it's still a lot of driving - Ann Arbor, of course, but also the Legacy Center in Brighton (my sister has seen him around town there) and sending a kid to Detroit Country Day, which is a world away from either place at 13 Mile and Lahser.

Mr. Web Gem has a kid old enough to be heading to college.... damn.  Side note, caught a line drive foul ball off him some years back.  Was my favorite player at the time too. In case y'all are wondering, it was a barehanded catch.
