DB transfer from The Utah Utes. Via his Twitter. Good to add some depth in the secondary. Go Blue!

Good thing we play so many spread teams since we will have 8 dbs on the field at all times to justify roster construction. Says bad things about the rest of this recruiting class

You are still capped at 85 per year and Michigan is already at the limit with the current class. There is either going to be a fuck ton of players leaving early or the staff doesn’t think they are getting more commits

I mean how many guys are we still in on? NPF and Patterson? Anderson as a grad guy? Even if you get 2 of 3, attrition happens all the time during Spring/Fall. You recruit for that attrition, and losing 3 or so guys is well within the norms.

I dunno about that. You're right about playing time for next year, but in terms of overall roster construction and opportunity cost we would not be taking a flier on a fifth year guy at a position that isn't a huge depth need if we had other great options to get tot 85 with freshmen that we truly wanted long-term. We mostly missed on those guys.

It's a 1-year scholarship. Michigan expected to take three Ole Miss guys, wound up taking 1. Clearly the staff believes he's worth the scholarship and are still able to take other guys on their board. But yes, let us all assume Michigan won't have another good thing happen to them this year and point this out in every commitment thread until NSD 2019.

He had 35 tackles, 2.5 for a loss with a sack, a pass breakup, and two forced fumbles, on a top-15 pass defense. Other than the PBUs, that's more production than Brandon Watson this year, and I think Watson was solid all year. He was also hurt to end the year, so that depressed his production a bit. Of course, that took me a couple of minutes to look up, which I can't expect from everyone. Certainly not in a commitment thread. Better to just claim he isn't very good and ask others to do the leg work.

You are looking at his stat line to conclude he is at least as good as Watson? That's as accurate as throwing darts in the dark. Many tackles are made after you give up a catch when you're a corner. That's not necessarily a great thing. Lots of pass break ups is a great thing. Appreciate the stats but why be a condescending turd about it?

the things people choose to enthusiastically embrace versus choose to never change, boggle my mind.

eagerly adopt smart phones despite all the well-established cognitive defects it confers (and unhappiness!)

but no adopting updated, better-defined stat-keeping despite the confusing and nebulous meanings in confers

I actually went to the SBNation team blog about his transfer from Utah and read their analysis, then looked at his stats to see his impact.  Basically sounds like Brandon Watson but a bit quicker and taller.  And he was effectively the starter before getting hurt, and probably would have had a chance to fight for his spot but was going to have competition from younger guys.  So basically, why all grad transfers move to another team.

The stats are relevant because it shows he was involved in the game. He had 5 PBUs - Hill and Long both had more. He had a couple more tackles than those guys, but he also forced some fumbles. My larger point was that he clearly played a meaningful role on a top-15 pass defense, and so chances are he's at least good enough to be a solid player on this defense, especially when the assumed 3rd-place guy on the roster.

I was being condescending because the OP said:

This guy didn't even make All conference in he PAC 10. Not even honorable mention. Is he even good?

Which is pretty condescending and obnoxious in the commit post for said player. So yeah, if I come across as slightly rude to someone who was too lazy to look up anything about the player except the media's Pac-10 all-conference teams, so be it.

Now this is an excellent post. I agree that the OP here was taking an unnessary stab at our transfer but no need to turd down to his level. Neg him (or not) and move on with your great info given here. This blog is golden with great info but panning through shit to find the gold gets annoying.

EDIT: This was intended for Bronx.

You’re baffled? I seem to remember Kinnel and Metellus getting torched against OSU and S. Carolina. How about when JKP had to play against Wiscy. How’d that turn out? Also Brandon Watson was the next guy up when Long/Hill were out and he was ok at best. I would rather have some OL but let’s not act like this secondary doesn’t need more guys.

This guy is an average DB at best.  No accolades to speak of.

Our safeties graded out consistently well all year with a few breakdowns.

I get that we need depth, but it sure seems like we're not addressing the real problems.

But hey, I'm just a fan.  The coaches obviously know more than I do about what the team needs, so I'll just sit back and hope that it all turns out well.

Smart to just relax and see what happens. The coaches obviously wanted him in our secondary. I’m guessing they think he’d be a very good fit. That’s a good thing. Just let whatever’s going to happen, happen.

Would have rather had the Ole Miss transfer but UofM pretends online classes at major state universities don’t count while still admitting high school athletes with minimal academic requirements from the NCAA.

Never heard of this kid before. His Utah bio says he was in line for backup safety snaps this year and Utah fan on reddit says he was solid in backup snaps this year. Sounds like he's the transfer replacement for the Ole Miss Safety and he'll compete for Nickel/Safety snaps. Good with me, between him and 2nd year Woods/JKP/BSJ/Thomas we should have good secondary depth this year.

For some reason that comes up first in google searches. He started all of last season at CB.

I agree that he is going to compete at safety/nickel here. For all the people bitching about this pickup, whose call do you think this was? Pretty clear to me that it's Brown first, Partridge and Zordich second.

is so baffled by the staff picking up so many DB's. The secondary is one of our thinest groups depth-wise on the team. This is a good pickup for the staff. He might even be good enough to replace Kinnel in coverage situations.
