"HarBod" Photographer Speaks

Submitted by MLaw06 on

Albert Cesare, a photographer from the Montgomery Advertiser, was the photographer who took the now-famous photo of the shirtless Coach Harbaugh with his hands over his head catching a football.  He penned an article whereby he seems to be almost surprised with the instant celebrity of Harbaugh, the man, the myth, the legend.  He asks why the world would care so much about a picture of a man, when they fail to be so affected by his pictures of starving horses or when they fail to create derivative memes about the flailing Alabama legislature.  Those questions must be rhetorical to some extent because it's hard for us to answer why Coach Harbaugh has become bigger than life.  He is our Coach, but he is also a celebrity (as Freddy Canteen rightfully noted).  A former NFL player, a former NFL coach, a TV persona, and a name that everyone in America knows.

I do not have a concise answer for Mr. Cesare, but I must say, that I have never felt so lucky as a Michigan fan, a Michigan alum, a Michigan man, to have a coach that makes me so excited not only for Michigan football, but for every single day.

Further, to Mr. Cesare, I agree that we should "share meaningful content not just what [we] find entertaining" and I believe that here on MGoBlog, we do see ourselves as a cut above the average blog, and hopefully, we will all strive to pursue our own lives with an "enthusiasm unknown to mankind".

Uh? Seriously? The dude was asked a question and he used his response to draw attention to stuff that matters to him. How's that a problem?

Why in the hell would his desire for people to engage in issues he finds important be an insult to you?

He gave us an outstanding glimpse into something that matters to us, be grateful and move on.

useless stuff we spend energy on...Kardashians (I don't even know if I'm spelling that correctly) for example. Our society is misguided..no shit. Many people don't have their priorities in order..this is not new. I loved his photos, the will always make me laugh...and I still think I'm a socially aware, good person.

if he had not taken that picture. Bitching about society's focus on superficiality is so lame. People watch sports to escape from the every day trials and tribulations most of us face. They don't want to know about starving horses, Eritean human rights violations, or any other example of the banality of evil.

It's depressing and people have enough problems to deal in their lives. You can criticize that as self-absorption and as being cruelly indifferent. That's fine. But most people have their hands full with the struggles of life  and such struggles  do not leave much time or energy to combat the unending list of cruelties  that plague our world.

His finger waggering only serves to boost his personal sense of righteousness. If he truly gave a fuck he'd feed those horses himself or at least make a serious effort to get people to help him do so. Alas, all he could give those poor creatures was a few clicks of the camera.Jane Goodall he is not.

I often find that those who mewl the most about the problems of the world are to be found among those who do the least about said problems.

want their stories read. I read it...he got my click.. My take on it is that we can take every friggin thing super serious, or we can enjoy what we enjoy and be happy. I'm not going to feel guilty for enjoying the hell out of those photos.

I don't think he's necessarily complaining about the attention.  It's more of a "thought/fluff" piece on why, we as a society, care more about Harbaugh than about seemingly more "real" events/issues.

I think he was also genuinely surprised by the level of attention Harbaugh got and the craze surrounding the picture.

Mr. Cesare should be thankful to Harbaugh.  Because of Harbaugh, he now has a platform to voice his concern about what the public chooses to care about.

Yeah I get that. I've photographer a lot of cool stuff in my time but nothing has been quite as popular on Twitter as a picture I photoshopped of shirtless Jim
Harbaugh stealing sad Urban Meyers pizza.

I love what Harbaugh is doing with the program and with college football.  He deserves the respect and the publicity he has earned. The man works hard every day to the last effing minute. Is there a plateau? I am worried about a depressing feeling if the sports world stops finding him interesting. I NEED SECURITY AND STABILITY!!!

The answer is simple. The purpose of life is to find happiness. Most search their entire lives for that feeling and although some find it it is fleeting and through their grasp as quick as it came. Jim Harbaugh is the physical manifestation of that pot of gold at the end of the rainbow of man's search for happiness. It can be seen in his body language most effusively. The exuberance of a child in a man's body but with a grounded persona. That's coach.

I think this one is the greatest Harbaugh picture of all time because it shows the intensity that Harbaugh has. He's holding a camp for high schoolers and he has one of them by the shorts trying to stop him.

You had me until that last part, and then I was all, like, priorities, dude.

I understand his frustration but this is the world we live in. We don't all think the same and some horses getting mistreated unfortunately won't even register with a lot of people. I would probably not even look at his horse photos because I turn off evil depressing shit and much prefer to look at something that will make me smile or laugh. If he's looking change the world with his art he's destined to always be disappointed. It's a noble quest and I wish him the best but shirtless Harbaugh will always win the popularity contest.
