Harbaugh on Warinner

Submitted by NashvilleBLUE on

In the below video, Jim Harbaugh talks about staff changes and upcoming hires, etc. Nothing meaty, other than Warinner. It's very clear that JH is enamored with Ed. Instead of reading the transcript, I watched the video and I'm glad I did. If you read his body language and his facial expressions when talking about Ed, he thinks he found an absolute gem. Not to mention his words. Based on them searching for a 10th assistant still, when he's so taken by Mr. Warinner, is it a fair speculation that maybe Ed will be taking a spot of someone CURRENTLY on staff and then the people they are interviewing will fill the last one? i just can't fathom why Jim is saying Ed will be his future best friend, talk about his amazing coaching ability and them keep him an analyst.

Thoughts from the board?

No we weren't. We were glad to get rid of Warriner as OC. But we would have loved to retain him at a demotion back down to OL coach, where he was very successful from 2012-2014. Alas, we had hired a replacement OL coach the year we promoted Warriner to OC, and there was no room for him to take a demotion down to his old job. Had OSU not hired Greg Studrawa to be the OL coach in 2015, I'd imagine we'd have been totally ok with Warriner returning to OL coach after we hired Kevin Wilson at OC.

I hear ya! Fuck it. We'll never beat them again. Everything is pointless. Why does this blog exist? Why does Michigan football exist? From here on out, I'm hijacking every thread and putting a recruiting spin on some random comment just to keep the wagons circled until we hire someone that can really get those Jimmy and Joe five-star types. Then, and only then, we can discuss these stupid analyst positions. Edit: Apparently this guy didn't last too long. Now I look like a pretty big butthole.

He needs to ditch the hat, and get contacts. This homage to Bo and Woody is now becoming silly. It's one thing if he's winning titles,at which it's eccentric. But when losing it's just silly.

You need to ditch the Alumnus in your screen name. I mean if you were actually supportive of the team it would be eccentric. But when bitching about everything and anything it just seems silly.

Is definitely a good OL coach. His line helped win a national title not that long ago. That team had multiple future NFL starters on the O line though - gotta have the horses for a guy like Ed to work his magic. I think we'll get there but I have to admit that I'm surprised by the lack of offensive lineman signed this year.

Look at his previous stops:

OSU - Meyer (Power Spread)
Notre Dame - Kelly (Spread)
Kansas - Mark Mangino (Spread)

He has almost two decades of working with primarily spread offenses.  I hope this means hello to power spread concepts and actual RPO plays, not just a token play here or there where no one expects the QB to keep the ball.

This is reminiscent of the way he spoke of Don Brown when we hired him before the 2016 season.  I am all for Harbaugh finding an offensive best friend if he is any thing like his defensive best friend.

It really seems like JH is very humble in this.  It was nice to hear him say we need to get the Off up to the level of the Def.  He gets it.  I am glad he does I think he has just had some struggles esp this past year with QBs going down etc and he totally knows the Off line is a big issue.  He seems humble and he seems to final show and say he knows what needs to be done without going into much detail at all.  I'm happy to hear that ... all we can do is hope.

If the offense can just become consistant and average to a little above average it will be a big improvment as our D is ready and can keep us in games.  It will be really interesting to see what the strength coach and the O-Line coaches can come up with.  We have some proven guys there now with good O-Line track records / results.

Excuse my ignorance, but does Ed’s role allow him to actually coach the O-Line? Will he actually be on the field during practices and teaching the guys or does he examine practice and game film and gives his analyst?

Seems to me that if he’s solely an analyst that doesn’t actually coach during practice that it’s a wasted role for me.

with clearly defined roles is really strange, especially since it's more than a month since the bowl game and more than two months since the end of the regular season. Who hires people when they don't know what exactly they'll be doing at the time of the hire? And this is on top of the offensive coordinator-by-committee approach, with no single person truly running the show.

As the initial announcement of Enos's hiring (which is still inexplicably up on MGoBlue in his bio) states,

"Enos will coach a yet to be finalized position group on offense."

I realize that Enos might have left regardless of how his position was eventually designated, but I wonder if a contributing factor in his decision to leave was that Harbaugh hired him without really knowing what he wanted him to do, while Saban apparently had no such questions.

http://mgoblue.com/news/2018/1/8/football-enos-named-to-michigans-offen…

And I think it's more than a little strange that while Enos is still listed as being part of the staff on the MGoBlue page, Warriner is nowhere to be found. What are they waiting for? Is the web guy on vacation?

Harbaugh needs to give Warriner some sort of title before he bolts like Enos.  Everyone thinks Enos is a scumbag that played us to get out of his non-compete, but I think he is still here if Harbaugh gives him the title that he is qualified for.  IMO, (since Harbaugh refuses to fire Drevno)  they need to make Warriner OT coach and OC and demote Drevno to interior OL coach.

Also, I think Enos accepted the job with the assumption the Pep was going to the NFL.  He didn't see that happening so he left for a better opportunity.  He had a clause in his contract that if he was bumped to a coordinator that he would get a pay increase so I'm assuming he was told or assumed he would become a coordinator.

If anything I fault Harbaugh for Enos leaving.  He was over qualified for the job should have been a coordinator with playcalling responsibilities.

UMForLife

February 8th, 2018 at 8:03 AM ^

So you are telling me that Enos walked into Harbaugh's office and told him he is going to boot unless he is going to get a title? He told him the same thing a few weeks earlier when he was hired. Right? People just seem to make up stuff to blame Harbaugh. No one knows what happened. Sparty cannot be trusted. That is the only sure thing here. Everything else is conjecture.

UMFoster

February 8th, 2018 at 8:47 AM ^

I think if Harbaugh would have got rid of his friends and made Enos a coordinator he wouldn't have left to be a QB coach somewhere.  He was over qualified for a WR coach job on Drevno's offense.

No I don't think Enos said that when he was hired, but I do think Harbaugh probably said something to the effect of "Pep is leaving to go to the NFL, when he does you are going to become the Passing Game Coordinator."  I assume that was the plan.

You can blame it on him being from MSU all you want, but this is his career and he is a good coach.  He's not going to pull a stunt like that out of spite and if he did, maybe Harbaugh should have caught onto it sooner.

UMForLife

February 8th, 2018 at 9:22 AM ^

I have no idea what happened and neither do you. I choose to believe Harbaugh over Enos. If Enos would have said I want to be this before he came onboard, it is a valid argument. It is ok for a coach to lookout for themselves but I am just saying that you are giving a pass to Enos and it is Harbaugh's fault. I Don't trust Enos to give him the benefit of the doubt.

Be a man and stand behind your commitment.....you knew the score going in. The fact that he took a lower job and bolted for a higher job when it became available isn't on Michigan. My black and white world says you stand behind your commitment.....don't make one if you can't.

A couple of other points:

  • The world is ltttered with folks who do jobs that they are over quailified for.
  • Enos would be a train wreck as the OC.....he personally ran the CMU offense into the ground. He pulled a Rich Rod and tried to take a team that was set up for the spread and immediately run the pro set. Picture this....down one to Navy....4th and 1 and Navy has a stacked line....the dumb *sss runs a 165 ib. tailback into a goal line defense and gets stuffed....Navy takes the ball down the field, scores and puts the game away. This sequence was a microcosm of his time at CMU.

Remember....never assume anything.

1.  You cannot blame a guy for making a career move that is best for him.  A guy can get fired and that's okay, but if he want's to take a promotion he is a POS?

Is every coach that takes a promotion with another school before their contract is up a POS?  Because a contract is a committment for X amount of years.

2.  There is a huge difference between being a HC and being an OC.  There are a lot of great coordinators that were shitty HC's.  To compare his HC resume to his OC resume is idiotic.

3.  The alternative is Tim Drevno.  You cannot honestly tell me that Tim Drevno is a better or more qualified OC than Enos.

4.  If you are overqualified for a position then go get another job.  Why settle for less than you are worth?

He's a a scumbag that left CMU without even telling his players. He's very shady, "Petrino-ish", and I think him and JH would have done nothing but butt-heads. I just wish Drev & Pep would get hired already!! Maybe JH can ask brother John to take one for the team and hire them to Baltimore?

UMFoster

Pep might get hired, but I wouldn't hold my breath on Drevno getting hired.  Anywhere he gets an offer from will be a demotion because no one is going to offer him an OC role.  Even as an OL coach his resume isn't amazing, and he is a terrible recruiter.

How in the fuck do any of us know there arent clearly defined roles? Are you in the coaches room? Do you speak to Harbaugh directly. This shit is unbelievable.

We had a bad year. It fucking happens. This isnt a well oiled Alabama. Get over it and support your fucking team. Snowflakes. MSU went 3-9 last year. Had one of the worst off-seasons Ive ever seen by a B1G school. The idiots were calling for everyones head. They were all incompetant. Then guess what happened?

The comment sections here has become as ignorant, misinformed and deliberately obtuse as any political comment section.

My best take away was that they are all "self scouting" the offense to make improvements to get it equal to the defense. I really liked that comment. There are some awesome offensive coaches at U-M and they just need to get on the same page to get the job done. Adding Ben Herbert is a key hire IMO to get the OL bigger, stronger and more fit. Warinner will help evaluate 2017 issues and generally provide a window into Meyer's head for The Game. My wish list for 2018? Get Patterson eligible. Demand the redshirt OL guys - Stueber, Filiaga, Honigford, Hudson - step up and kick ass. It seems like the coaches are babying these guys too much. Demand they put up now not in two years. I want 2018 to be the year we develop an OL that can kill it in 2019 ... because that is our year to contend for titles.

Cam Cameron has met with Harbaugh and is a candidate for a spot on the staff. No word on just what position, but it’s highly unlikely it would be for defense. Since Warinner is an “analyst” and there’s no indication that Drevno has been relieved of his OC duties or that Pep has been relieved of his “passing game” duties, it’s anyone’s guess wth is going to happen.

OSU fan here.  Here is what we many OSU sites say about Ed:

1.  He is a GREAT OL coach.

2.  He has a personality that rubs everybody the wrong way (and that is being polite).  He is thus not well liked by the players, fellow coaches, staff.  His personality also leads to him being a poor recruiter.

3.  He is not strong at evaluating high school players.  He recruited several guys that were not heralded recruits and the fan base was excited that we were digging deeper than other programs and finding diamonds in the rough.  None of those guys panned out, which set back OSU's OL significantly.

OSU's OL was thus great when he arrived and was coaching talented players that had been recruited under Tressel.  But the OL play deteriorated as time went on.

My bold ass prediction based on absolutely nothing whatsoever:  Whatever shake-up that might take place on the offensive coaching staff will happen soon now that signing day is done.  Suspect, things were held status quo as they did not want to rock the boat for any of the potential recruits.  Kids have now signed (not enough elite ones with us, sadly) and so staff will take shape quickly.

I, like most on the board, hate the seeming disarray and indecision.  However, some of my worst decisions in life were of the knee jerk variety, while my best came after much contemplation.  For now, I will keep the faith that this very thing is going on behind closed doors at Bo Hall and the offense will find its way...SOON.

he wasnt a very good recruiter/evaluator of OL. One of the best OL coaches in the country, but under his watch we had 9 OL in 3 years that he recruited that either transferred or were just past up on the depth chart by younger players. it all came to a head in 2016 when we were forced to a start 2 freshman on the OL. Jordan @ LG and Prince @ RT.  we are now just getting our depth back to where it should be but they are true freshman and sophmores.
