Harbaugh pushing for Clink and Elston per Sam Webb

I have thoughts on this, but I am going to calm myself down before I give them.
February 5th, 2024 at 7:47 PM ^
This is a fair question, why are they negging you Blue?
Well I'm guessing none of the coaches Harbaugh poaches will be making $5mil+...
February 5th, 2024 at 8:24 PM ^
I doubt Harbaugh would've had someone in that position that he didn't highly, highly respect. And what if Moore's ultimate goal wasn't to go to the NFL but to be a head coach in college? Harbaugh had nothing to offer him.
February 6th, 2024 at 5:08 AM ^
Seems simple to me.
Be Head Coach at Michigan or Assistant in the NFL..
Cmon man.
February 5th, 2024 at 9:16 PM ^
Because Michigan HC is a better job than NFL OC.
February 5th, 2024 at 6:58 PM ^
In contrast to what Meyer did at Jacksonville. He took no one with him. I said at the time that the owner and GM should have called Urban in for a meeting, asked where his loyalties lie and be prepared to void his contract.
The Chargers should be happy with Jim.
February 5th, 2024 at 8:16 PM ^
Surprise Jim Harbaugh cares about Jim Harbaugh and his stupid little trophies.
I think the issue is that nobody in the NFL wants to work for Jim, surprise, so he's raiding Michigan. Or he doesn't want Michigan to be successful after he's gone which is every ex-coach. Or both.
Hey Jim? fuck off, leave Michigan alone.
If Jim Harbaugh goes 1-16 next year and gets fired I will be upset that he won a game.
February 5th, 2024 at 8:32 PM ^
You don’t handpick a successor who happens to be a first time head coach and then make things extremely difficult for them to succeed.
If this was gonna be the case then you at the very least explore an outside hire.
February 5th, 2024 at 9:00 PM ^
No one said he hand picked him. In fact, he couldn’t make that decision. Harbaugh has been and will always be about Harbaugh. It’s all about winning. No loyalty beyond his desire to win.
February 5th, 2024 at 9:09 PM ^
Tim Drevno says hello. But otherwise, yes.
February 5th, 2024 at 11:07 PM ^
So you’re saying you don’t think Moore is up to the job?
February 5th, 2024 at 4:42 PM ^
Thought 1: it's his job to win with the Chargers
Thought 2: he learned the hard way that Warde is weak, and now he's taking advantage
February 5th, 2024 at 4:55 PM ^
Thought 3: he is helping them get raises from their current employer
Please be thought 3, please...
February 5th, 2024 at 5:33 PM ^
Definitely true that the only way they can get raises is with another offer, so I’m with you on #3.
February 5th, 2024 at 8:36 PM ^
This fan base and the main bloggers take that somehow the Harbaugh’s are going to continue working to benefit the Michigan coaching staff is absolutely laughable. Jim is gone and he and John are not going to help Michigan any more by giving us talented coaches. He already took the best DC Michigan has ever had and the best S&C coach. Jay Harbaugh is also gone, a move that everyone agrees is not in his best long term interest.
Jim and John, and Mike are now the competition for coaches, make no mistake. Also, we are losing.
February 5th, 2024 at 5:47 PM ^
Instead of focusing on hiring his own staff, he’s spending time getting his old staff raises. That’s one helluva guy. Not saying it’s not possible, but it would take an extremely unselfish guy who would put his new organizations needs on the back burner and seems unlikely.
February 5th, 2024 at 7:00 PM ^
If he really loved Michigan and the fanbase he would hire away WARDE!!!!
February 5th, 2024 at 8:11 PM ^
Finally, someone thinking outside the box!
Brilliant!!!
February 5th, 2024 at 11:24 PM ^
Honestly this is such a massive indictment against Warde. I knew the guy was a shit AD when Harbaugh interviewed with the Vikings post-2021. 2022 came and went and the same thing happened, and I was beside myself. I posted a thread here saying that we should be getting out the torches and pitchforks like we did with Brandon, and people here actually *defended* Warde and negged me. All I can say at this point is I'm eternally thankful to Harbaugh, the sole architect of the greatest 3 years in Michigan football history. I don't blame him for leaving town and bringing everyone he can with him, because it's clear that Warde is a born-on-third P.O.S. whose greatest aspiration is apparently becoming the next NCAA president. Michigan football is about to take a big step backwards. I like Sherrone, but the program is not going to sustain this level of success with Warde at the helm.
February 5th, 2024 at 4:44 PM ^
that would be...disappointing. gutting the entire D coaching tree will probably have a portal impact, especially after taking S&C coach. This is getting late in the cycle to get any proven replacements.
February 5th, 2024 at 4:49 PM ^
Easy solution is to promote them to co-DC and pay them seven figures each.
Don't hold your breath for Warde to do that though.
February 5th, 2024 at 4:55 PM ^
Seriously, I mean what's taking so long to secure Elston and Clink?
Moore and Warde need to be proactive and not drag their feet, I just wish we knew more about what's going on.
February 5th, 2024 at 5:02 PM ^
The blurb for Sam's post appears to imply that both guys want play-calling duties. They won't get that in LA, obviously, but maybe it would feel like a step closer.
February 5th, 2024 at 6:08 PM ^
Im guessing Warde puts out a press statement the morning they sign with San Diego about his lucrative offer to them.
February 5th, 2024 at 4:58 PM ^
Clinkscale is already has the co-DC title and is getting paid ~$900k/year.
I guess Moore/Warde could stop the search and promote Clinkscale to lead DC + give him the extra 100-200k to bump him into 7-figures. Elston, I don’t know is a clear slam-dunk to be co-DC though, IIRC, Notre Dame/Marcus Freeman gave him a shot at coordinating, and chose to demote him back to DL line soon after.
February 5th, 2024 at 5:09 PM ^
Elston was their DC for a bowl game and they were not good
February 5th, 2024 at 5:26 PM ^
I would assume under Minter, Elston has added to his skill sets.
February 5th, 2024 at 5:03 PM ^
i don't see the point of just throwing money at people to keep the staff together. at least not based on what the fans know. neither elston nor clink have been DCs and we at least have no idea whether they're worth that kind of money. maybe folks inside the program know they'd be great and in that case maybe it's worth the risk of elevating one or both. but paying both of them nearly a million bucks seems kind of bonkers to me.
February 5th, 2024 at 5:35 PM ^
The alternate right now though appears to be trusting Sherrone to hire two more outside guys when he's been primarily hiring internally?
February 5th, 2024 at 8:23 PM ^
Thing is he’s young and what’s his network like? Jim knew just about everyone in football of consequence.
February 5th, 2024 at 4:44 PM ^
Moore can't catch a break.
Really hard to build a staff this late and I'm just going to assume a bunch of guys will bolt once the spring portal window opens up.
February 5th, 2024 at 4:46 PM ^
The window is open for them now - why would they wait until spring?
February 5th, 2024 at 4:47 PM ^
Tough to transfer in the middle of quarter/semester for college athletes.
February 5th, 2024 at 4:52 PM ^
You can enter the portal without leaving school. You can even indicate you're transferring to a new school without leaving school until the next quarter/semester
February 5th, 2024 at 6:40 PM ^
They don’t have to physically transfer right now. It’s the same concept as a high schooler committing to a college while still in high school. Enter the portal now, commit to your new school, enroll for the next quarter/semester.
February 5th, 2024 at 6:10 PM ^
Somebody make up their fucking minds. How many open positions do we have right now? Figure it out.
February 5th, 2024 at 6:41 PM ^
Well part of making up their mind would require them to have an offer in hand and the two parties vying for their services to finish their terms
February 5th, 2024 at 6:52 PM ^
Yeah they are who Im talking about.
February 5th, 2024 at 7:04 PM ^
Bidding wars tend to take time
February 5th, 2024 at 4:44 PM ^
I get that he wants the best coaches he can get, but it's getting to the point that it just seems like it's a bit out of spite.
February 5th, 2024 at 4:53 PM ^
like he’s rooting for 7-5 next year to say, “seeee??”
February 5th, 2024 at 5:00 PM ^
What did you think him saying “Michigan and the Chargers are the same team” meant? It was obviously him saying he wanted the work family he kept talking about loving so much to stay intact.
February 5th, 2024 at 5:33 PM ^
It’s the Dantonio approach. Bring the team to the best they have been in a long, long time, then leave in a manner that knocks it back down to where it started.
February 5th, 2024 at 6:32 PM ^
Didn’t Dantonio leave under shady circumstances?
February 5th, 2024 at 10:25 PM ^
He waited until he got his bonus for still being coach and then quit, after all of the top candidates and assistants had been snatched up.
Sadly, this feels a little similar. Making sure he’s taken care of, with little regard to those that he claims to care about.
February 5th, 2024 at 4:44 PM ^
Damn, dude. You don't need to take everyone.
February 5th, 2024 at 4:47 PM ^
He didn't take Jay.
February 5th, 2024 at 5:50 PM ^
If he wanted to coach with these guys he coulda just stayed….
February 5th, 2024 at 4:46 PM ^
I mean is it that hard to make both clink and elston co-dc with significant pay raises…
February 5th, 2024 at 4:52 PM ^
It's not. Michigan saved 7 million a year on HC. Spread that saved money around the staff!
February 5th, 2024 at 6:12 PM ^
Warde is currently scouring the internet for 10% off coupons on signing defensive coaches.
