The visit was the cover story. He was interviewing with the Cardinals.
January 18th, 2023 at 2:13 PM ^
If we want the 2024 class to be strong, there needs to be a renewed contract with a hefty buyout and they need to get it done asap. This whole Harbaugh’s back and Ono got it done is sufficient for this upcoming season but nothing has changed, really. I’m sure the Davis family is looking at the situation the same way most of us are. What’s changed?
January 18th, 2023 at 2:17 PM ^
I liked it better in the olden days, when a new QB recruit just sort of showed up in August.
January 18th, 2023 at 7:56 PM ^
If you don’t seek out information on recruiting, it will happen just like the old days. Leave your worries behind - just get off the internet.

Need to start brining Santa with him on trips. Hard to say no to Santa

Christmas is for Closers

Brining Santa? You’re definitely getting coal this year!
January 18th, 2023 at 2:24 PM ^
Does anyone know if he spent his early years in the Detroit area?
January 18th, 2023 at 2:35 PM ^
I hope this works out. We need a 2024 star QB badly. We missed in 22,23 and we can't afford to miss this cycle. I hope Harbaugh is giving Raiola the full NIL treatment that he fought so hard for. A guy can dream.
January 18th, 2023 at 2:37 PM ^
It doesn't sound great for Davis but I remain largely unbothered by QB recruiting at this point. It helps to have 5* talent at the QB spot but between the transfer portal and how dumb some of these NIL "offers" are it might be a losing battle to chase those types of players every year. UM should absolutely be bringing in a 4*-ish QB every year or two (e.g. a Cade McNamara type) because with the offense they run they can absolutely make the playoffs and compete for titles with that level of production.
As for scheme turning guys away I'm sure that's true for some kids but this year in particular it felt like Harbaugh really didn't want to put too much on McCarthy's plate because he was a first-year starter and still had some rough edges. We'll see how the offense looks next year with McCarthy full weaponized; I don't think it's 40 passes a game but with a second-year Shea Patterson UM threw about 32 times a game, which was dead average in the country. That's a decent passing offense - Bryce Young threw 32 times per game this year and Will Levis only threw 26 per game and both of them are considered top NFL draft picks.
January 18th, 2023 at 2:45 PM ^
I may be in the minority here but I don’t see the problem. If Davis is meeting with other teams, why wouldn’t we meet with other QB’s. One way to prevent a recruit from slow playing us is to have viable alternatives. This pressure is one way that programs like UGA and OSU convince big name QB’s to commit early to them.
January 18th, 2023 at 10:41 PM ^
it's not a problem for how we're treating Davis, it's a problem for what we imagine it means about the likelihood of Davis coming, which seemed like a near-sure thing
January 18th, 2023 at 3:01 PM ^
Does anyone have a reasonably good idea of Davis' potential as a QB? I've seen plenty of chatter about if/when/whether he might commit, but not much about his skill level. From what I have seen my impression is that he has a good, but not great, arm and runs well but not often.
What makes him a top recruit? Pocket presence/vision/ability to process? Or is he just really good at most of what it takes to be a good QB?
January 18th, 2023 at 3:49 PM ^
He doesn't have an elite arm or elite physical traits, but his ball placement and decision making are very impressive
January 18th, 2023 at 7:59 PM ^
Maybe he can give Weiss some tips on better decision making with his ball placement!
January 18th, 2023 at 4:48 PM ^
Jadyn Davis is 6'0". Not a great height for a college QB. We've seen in the past how shorter QBs get their passes batted down, can't see the coverages, etc. He has great talent according to everyone, but I've long wondered about his height.
January 18th, 2023 at 5:14 PM ^
You make a good point. Sure, 6'0" is not ideal, but lets not forget the many shorter QBs like Kyler Murray, Mayfield, Manziel, Brees, Bryce Young, Russell Wilson, to name a few that had great success in college.
January 18th, 2023 at 3:14 PM ^
Pretty much, UM and co. put all their eggs in one basket and now the backup is Dylan which has no association to UM and has multiple suitors since today. UM doing UM things and losing a 5 star in the last run. Gotta love it. Hopefully, Davis just stays in his state and not go to OSU. I’ll take the negs for this pessimistic view
January 18th, 2023 at 3:22 PM ^
If he were to commit to Michigan, it would send the Buckeye faithful into orbit! Make it happen Harbaugh.
January 18th, 2023 at 3:22 PM ^
Why are people so sure that this is JJ’s last year? The 2024 draft class is loaded at QB (Caleb Williams, Drake Maye, Rattler, Ewers, Nix, etc).
January 18th, 2023 at 3:25 PM ^
Would jj want to stick around for rebuild the following year? I think you have to plan for it and not be blindsided. My guess is we hit the portal to compete with warren and whoever the freshman is.
January 18th, 2023 at 4:10 PM ^
Why are we rebuilding in '24? Our starting backfield could be the Don and Cabana, along with some good young receivers, including Loveland. I don't know what our defense would look like, but Will Johnson will only be a junior. 2024 is shaping up to be a good year if we get third-year starting QB back.
January 18th, 2023 at 4:28 PM ^
The Don is gone after next year. He said it himself in an interview this week. Said Blake should have gone. Same for Zinter!
January 18th, 2023 at 4:41 PM ^
Because Edwards and Corum will for sure be gone, and JJ likely will. So will many linemen.
January 18th, 2023 at 3:28 PM ^
If I'm a QB, I'm leaving ASAP (assuming reasonable chance of success) because the 2nd contract is when the money really comes in as rookie contracts are capped.
January 18th, 2023 at 5:52 PM ^
I might go pro right after winning a National Championship.
January 18th, 2023 at 4:10 PM ^
At face value that doesn’t seem like a good thing as pertains to Michigan’s chances with Jadyn Davis. I don’t know that for sure, but if Harbaugh is emphasizing another guy now it usually doesn’t spell good things.
In any case, Michigan needs to land a quality QB in this recruiting cycle. Whiffed hard on Dante Moore, and we’re now at real risk of going into 2024 and having to rely on either a true freshman at QB or hoping a quality candidate emerges in the transfer portal and wants to come here. Very distinct possibility that JJ leaves after next season and if we don’t have a guy ready to take the reins that will severely hinder the team’s ceiling.
January 18th, 2023 at 6:43 PM ^
We have Davis Warren waiting in the wings, and I for one am optimistic about that. Nonetheless your point is well taken. We badly need at least one 4*+ QB in the class of '24. Not getting one in '23 kinda makes sense when considering JJ's trajectory, but there has to be one in the next class.
Is Jadyn Davis really the guy though? I know nothing about evaluating HS tape, but the highlights I have seen don't really impress as much as I would have expected from a 5* (though he does seem rather polished). He looks small and only middling when it comes to elusiveness and arm strength. Maybe his accuracy, poise, and decision-making are advanced? Other commenters have asked the same questions and it would be great to hear from the experts as to why this guy is so hyped. I know nothing though and would happily eat crow if Michigan does land him and he balls out.
January 19th, 2023 at 7:46 AM ^
Jadyn Davis is Bryce Young-a very athletic, articulate, composed, intelligent young man.
January 19th, 2023 at 9:26 AM ^
That is exactly what I thought from watching his tape. He is very elusive in the pocket and feels the pressure well. He seems to be able to get the ball out with without panic and places it where his receivers can get it. Bryce Young 2.0
January 18th, 2023 at 4:16 PM ^
I never understood why we were recruiting Davis and Davis alone. Stupid in the transfer era and any other
January 18th, 2023 at 4:23 PM ^
Hopefully armed with the promise of an NIL shift...
January 18th, 2023 at 4:47 PM ^
There is going to be quite a drop off once JJ, Blake, and Donovan leave. Maybe Jay Harbaugh can help Mike Hart recruit RBs. I still don't understand why Weiss is on staff making $800,000 per year in base pay. The passing game is underwhelming, and he isn't much of a recruiter either.
January 18th, 2023 at 4:49 PM ^
This is a great point, Comrade. We need an elite recruiter in the passing game coordinator position. Weiss' problems are an opportunity to upgrade.
January 18th, 2023 at 4:56 PM ^
Yep, I don't think some people realize how huge of a class the 2024 class is. We need an elite QB and RB in this class. The 2024 season already looks like it's going to be a bit of a drop off season given just how much talent we are likely losing so we need to reload fast
January 18th, 2023 at 6:46 PM ^
QB is absolutely a need and an elite RB or two wouldn't hurt but I think year three Stokes and year two Cabana will be a pretty good combo and maybe Hall hits.
January 18th, 2023 at 8:15 PM ^
Hart has been disappointing so far which sucks. I wish we could clone a couple of Jay Harbaugh's. The guy is just a good coach and recruiter, no matter the position.
I can't wait until we drop Weiss, he's such an underwhelming coach to me.
January 18th, 2023 at 4:54 PM ^
Quarterback is a concern, but on the other hand the portal really evens things out. Take a look at what Ole Miss has done in the last two offseasons.
Jaxon Dart-maybe didn't pan out as hoped for them this year but former top 100 guy and a lot of hype from a few starts at USC.
Yesterday they just brought in Walker Howard who was a top 50 guy from the 2021 class.
I think if JJ has the season we all hope for, if Michigan is in a spot of needing a QB next off season they'll have their pick of guys of similar quality.
January 18th, 2023 at 5:27 PM ^
He met with Raiola in the same way that I was once in the same room as Kate Upton. I introduced myself along with a few others and if you asked her what my name was 4 seconds later she wouldn't have remembered it.
If Davis is out (not saying he is), go hard after the St. Francis kid. He's probably the best shot at a difference maker QB on the class.
Or go super-crazy if you think JJ stays or Warren is capable and recruit in a way that appeases Underwood.
January 18th, 2023 at 6:55 PM ^
You believe the interaction between you, mgoposter, and Kate Upton is comparable to one of the most famous coaches in America talking to a high school player. Bro.
January 18th, 2023 at 8:51 PM ^
I am pretty sure Madonna is still mentioning me by name from that brief interaction at lunch at Stockwell Hall.
January 19th, 2023 at 12:24 AM ^
Your Kate Upton situation is fantasy, Harbaugh’s meeting with Raiola actually happened.
FIFY
January 18th, 2023 at 6:12 PM ^
my opinion might be unpopular here. but given the number of high quality QBs going to the portal every year, and numerous examples of immediate success on their new teams. I am not too worried about missing out on 5* QB recruits out of high school anymore. As long as we are able to maintain the offensive line to be the best in the country, we should have little problem finding a veteran QB who likes to lead behind them.
January 18th, 2023 at 7:09 PM ^
The transfer portal allows you to potentially make up for recruiting misses but that does not mean it is the optimal path.
If Michigan misses on the 2024 QB cycle it would be the 3rd in a row. That is dangerous for the programs future.
January 18th, 2023 at 7:27 PM ^
We lost on Dante Moore last year and need a star this year. We can’t miss again. There is no guarantee we can get a great QB from the portal. Good yes, but not great
January 19th, 2023 at 12:05 AM ^
Can’t lose what was never “ours”.
the kid never had any real interest in being here.
January 18th, 2023 at 7:01 PM ^
He isn’t going to UM. He was in LA sitting with Stafford for the National title game and celebrating with UGA after the game.
January 18th, 2023 at 7:50 PM ^
Davis was a risk of going to OSU once Raiola de-committed .
January 18th, 2023 at 8:11 PM ^
This class is so important. We need to find elite options at QB and RB just like JJ and Donovan were in their class. We really need to replace these guys with high end talent to avoid a dip in play.
Whether it's getting Davis or whoever, they can't afford to go for some more project QBs.
