Harbaugh and Future NFL Flirtations -- Not Gonna Happen!

Submitted by WalterWhite_88 on February 4th, 2022 at 4:05 PM

I don't know about you, but I'm continually blown away by some football reporters and Michigan fans saying that Harbaugh will continue to flirt with the NFL again next year and the year after that. I was just listening to The Wolverine podcast with Balas, Doug Skene, and Angelique, and they're talking about how if Michigan has a really good year next year, then it's going to be another offseason of Harbaugh flirting with the NFL. I think this is just insane, for these reasons:

1. Warde is not going to put up with another offseason of Harbaugh trying to get a job with an NFL team. It's bad for recruiting and for Michigan, and Warde would almost assuredly say "Ok, I've had enough of this, time for us to move on from Jim". This was a one-time thing, and if it happens again, especially after Harbaugh told him it wouldn't happen again... then you can bet that Warde would fire him and move on. Sam Webb said as much during the WTKA podcast yesterday. I don't know why these other Michigan football insiders don't understand that.

2. Considering the fact that he would likely be fired for flirting with the NFL again, and that the new contract is likely to have a huge buyout, thus scaring away most NFL teams, I don't think Harbaugh is dumb enough to try this again.

3. I personally believe Harbaugh when he says that he is staying with Michigan and will no longer ever pursue the NFL.

Bruce Arians was hired by the Bucs when he was 66. I think Harbaugh was surprised that teams weren't lining up for him and I think that, in part, has to do with how his first 6 years here were at U of M. If he wins a national title at U of M, then I imagine he'll have more teams wanting him and then he'll be heading to the NFL. Either way, he's going to be plenty motivated.

Other than OP’s abrasiveness, I don’t understand the sea of downvotes. I think it is irresponsible of Balas to report as he does. The guy is a true doom and gloomer, an always seeing the negative side of things armchair QB, as are those who join him most of the time on his podcasts…. They always think they are the mature ones being the “bearer of bad news” or “the real, uncomfortable truth”….these low energy people can take a hike for all I care, Skene included. And that goes for these low-energy folk in all realms of society.

(yeah I used new age terminology, lol)

"I personally believe"   is o.k. in a comment, especially a comment in a snowflakes thread.  If you have the need to say that in an OP you should not be posting.

Well, the way Warde addresses that is through his contracting of the coach. That said, I think the OP is right that you can rely on Harbaugh's word because why make an impossible pledge you don't intend to keep. The fact is, however, that the coach's desire to go to the NFL was borne from the same fire that drives him as Michigan's coach. And if you turn off that furnace, you are in a major power outage.

At the same time, if the team and program tanks, I can absolutely guarantee that no one here will care whether that pledge was made by the coach now or ever, they'll want someone else. It won't matter what is winning percentage is today. He even couched his return to Warde in a question, do you want me back or not, because I know where home is for me. Take me or leave me. I'll accept that choice. He gets it.

I'm paraphrasing but for all the emotional responses that were evident on Wednesday in connection with his Vikings interview, most were based on the feeling that how could you leave us now. And it was never about loyalty or love, it was about fulfilling personal desire. And if you kill desire, you kill growth, because passion drives our interests and what we do professionally.

We have a very favorable schedule next year even with the recent adjustment in calendar of game matchups. The first major test won't come till Week 5 on the road against Iowa. And that is a team we should beat. I am looking forward to Harbaugh's next chapter at Michigan. We are in contract with him now. I am convinced that this coach is the right one for us. He bleeds our colors, because he has bled as a Michigan athlete and coach through time and with his family. There isn't any closer encounter.

And no matter what you think of Michigan's Godfather figure in Bo, Harbaugh is his reincarnation. You either accept that or you don't. I accept it.

Am I imagining things or does this site have a lot threads lately that are basically about the OP having a thought? Not every idea is worth a thread, comrades. How hard is it to put your epiphany in an existing thread? I think we've had a few this week about Harbaugh.

1. Wrong -- Warde will put up with whatever Jim decides to do. He has said as much -- "it's up to Jim."

2. Wrong -- see #1. Jim will not be fired by Warde. Also, we have no idea what the contract is "likely" to have.

3. I believe this 80% -- He also said "this is only the beginning" after which he proceeded to try to bail for the NFL. That no team would have him does not change this. I want to believe Jim 100%. But I don't.

As in other threads, I'll end by saying that if we have an excellent season, I don't care about any of what he's done. As long as he stays engaged, focuses on beating OSU, and continues to make great coaching hires, what he does in the off-season is simply an annoyance.

Beat MSU. Beat OSU. Win the Big Ten.

I stopped listening after you said Balas because that dude is a hack. It was wrong about Harbaugh and he was wrong with a bunch with assistant hires last year. I wouldn't listen to him about anything Michigan. He always says his track record speaks for itself and it does. He's garbage.

It’s for sure going to happen, I feel bad for people who don’t think it won’t. As soon as he finds the right team and situation he gone and I don’t blame him for wanting to explore different career opportunities.

I just laugh at the people that think he wants to be here and that it won’t happen again.

It will only happen if he continues to do well in the next couple of years.  I know he made a statement because he doesn’t want recruits to get squirmy that this will be a pattern.  So, I get it, but I also would understand if he changes his mind at some point.  I wouldn’t begrudge him at all for that.

I think you can want to be in more than one place.  If he didn’t want to be here, he’d be looking at other college jobs.  A lot of us have jobs that we enjoy and take pride in, that doesn’t mean that our aspirations stop there.  We might not have been his first choice the last few weeks, but being his second choice doesn’t mean he doesn’t like it here.

Not this time...JUB said it yesterday Harbaughs word is his word and hes stated that this was it for him and the NFL...I truly believe that NOW he can go about the business of building a National Championship caliber team year in and year out....I was wishy washy about\ JH after year 4...frustrated like everyone..I was also pissed that he was openly flirting with the NFL after FINALLY winning a B10 title and beating OSU...I mean we stood by him  for 7 years and the first hint of success hes ready to bolt? That rubbed me the wrong way HOWEVER thats all in the past..Hes righted the ship Hes here to stay for a LONG time and its going to be FUN!

Keep an eye on Arizona. Kingsbury might be gone if they have another late season swan dive and miss the playoffs next year.

And they will be looking for the opposite approach of the wunderkind model next time. If Harbaugh has another really good year, the Cardinals will at least inquire.

I never wanted Harbaugh fired, even when things were in the shitter and certainly didn’t wanna go through the RR/Hoke years if he did leave. Saying that, if I’m Warde I lay the law. Basically put the university, players and staff through some stressful shit that will most likely impact recruiting somehow some way. All for the opportunity to coach a team that’s a slightly more respectable franchise than the lions. I’m glad he’s staying but your either all in or your not. Michigan should never be a fall back job.

So, you somehow think the current head football coach at Michigan has only two options, coach here or retire?  Harbaugh has enough money to personally pay any buyout or at least to cut that buyout in half.  A “big” buyout don’t mean much, he can always either retire for a year or do the above.  If he stays, it’s because he wants to be here, not because his buyout is “big”.

I'm cautiously optimistic about JH's statement being true as he seems to be a man of his word (although, who knows if he retires two years from now, takes a year off and then goes to the NFL, is that breaking his word?).

But on the whole I'm disappointed in the thought process here, it seems like JH thought "well this is as good as I'm going to do at Michigan, so time to trade up." Instead of building on the momentum of making a CFP appearance (even a not great one), we got all this drama. It's impossible to say whether it did long term damage to the program, although I'm inclined to think that it probably did.

All that said, JH is a good coach, and he won his way last year, so I'm certainly relieved he's coming back, I just feel like this program across the board is always shooting itself in the foot.
