Happy Memorial Weekend Posbang!!

Submitted by UM Griff on
Having insomnia, so I thought I would get the party started! My family is at the cottage on Lake Michigan for the weekend - lots of barbecuing, card games, and catching the Indy 500. What will you be doing to kick off summer? Wishing all my MGoFriends a safe and happy Memorial Weekend!

I like it. Taking Thursday through Monday off too. I am hoping the weather will cooperate. Firing up the smoker Saturday and Sunday (Brisket and ribs). Monday is reserved for Maryland Blue Crabs and beer!

Will run the Bolder Boulder 10k with my Michigan shirt and an enthusiasm unknown to mankind. It's a great scene every year. 55,000 runners, ends in the C-U stadium, which will be full when the Memorial Day festivities that include Air Force jets, skydivers, speeches from Medal of Honor recipients begin. Pretty cool way to start the summer.

It's a great race, don't miss your start time. The race is incredibly well-run (no pun). I came out from New York, met up with a fellow Michigan alum who came in from Rochester Hills and stayed with another Michigan alum in Boulder. I think you will hear plenty of Go Blue on your run. Enjoy it!

and will have/teach the kids 4 days of fairly short self-defense classes.

you all have a great holiday weekend, and do not forget what and why we have a 'memorial day' holiday.   uncounted brave souls gave their lives that we might have this freedom.  our job is to try and preserve it, not squander it.

"Happy Memorial Day"?!!! This is the most infuriating post ever...it's not a happy day. It's supposed to be a solemn day of remembrance for those who died serving their country. What is happy about that? It's also not a recognition of veterans for their service, that's what Veterans Day is for. Please understand the purpose of this day, it might be our most important holiday. I served 5 years on the Army and lost 14 fellow soldiers so I'm admittedly sensitive about this but cmon man...would you tell someone going to a wake or funeral "have a good time". Would you show up at a Memorial service and tell everyone what a happy day it is? I like the three day weekend too, but you owe it to the people who died to understand the meaning of Memorial Day.

For better or for worse, Memorial Day is the more or less unofficial official kick-off to summer.  It's a having a good time kind of holiday, while hopefully setting aside some time to remember why we can have a good time.

I completely agree that this is not a day to thank a veteran or recognize veterans for their service, because "service" is a puny thing compared to the intended purpose of the day.  It's not about the living veterans.

Kicking off a 4 day weekend with a little R&R. Looking forward to some libations and ribs on the grill. But let us not forget the reason for this day and take some time out of our day Monday and remeber the fallen.  Their ultimate sacrifice has afforded us the capability to enjoy the activities which we post here and so many other thing that we take for granted.
