Hackett: get used to multiple night games in future

Submitted by Wolverine Devotee on

I'm a 3:30-kickoff hater. Shouldn't have complained as hard.

!!!! RT @nickbaumgardner: Hackett still says home night games against Michigan State/Ohio State not off the table. No decision yet, though.

once again the Big Ten follows the SEC.  Night games--please no more than 1 a season.  I prefer doing my drinking after the game than before.

noon games are fine, and night games do seem to have more zip, but 330 is the sweet spot

great for us on the west coast.  although 9AM games are unique and fun in their own way, i'd rather sleep in a bit!

So this was obviously a foreign concept to me as a Midwesterner, but I absolutely loved the 9:30am kickoff for the Lions London game. You eat breakfast and brew up some coffee for the game, and then afterwards you still have your whole day ahead of you.

If we want to attract more top recruits from California, then a good share of 3:30 pm and night time starts might help. Many kids can become infatuated with schools they’ve seen on TV. The majority of those west coast kids probably aren’t going to be getting up at 9:00 am to watch us.

about time.  players love night games, not even comparable to early kicks for 99% of players.  if people freak about osu at night, fine - but all other games should be on the table.  and then pick a couple per year.  its a better environment, players / recruits love it, tv audiences are the same or better, etc.

very few reasons not to with tradition, etc topping the list

You're absolutely right. It's weird, but something about those Sat afternoon high school games. They feel like a scrimmage, and the excitement is just gone - from the crowd and the players.

"Modernizing" like wearing uniformz and playing "Seven Nation Army" 50 times a game?  Those awesome ideas came from the rest of college football.

The occasional night game is fun but if we start having 2-3 a year, I'd consider giving up my tickets.  They're a pain in the ass in a lot of ways.

Tailgate before and after the game ... home by 6PM.  Worked great while in college also.  Never missed a kickoff yet.

Said it before.  Will say it again.

I want whichever game time gives us the greatest advantage, however minor it may seem.

> Games against teams from out west should be noon games no question.  Make 'em get up earlier than they are used to.

> Games against teams from the east don't really matter as much, but I say the more night games the better... to a point.  Night games always seem to have a more electric home atmosphere, plus recruiting atmosphere, plus prime time television publicity.

Not saying 3:30 games should be out of the question, but they should only be against teams from the east when night games just don't make sense.

I think night games are exciting and have a very different vibe, but I really enjoy the flow of my Saturday best when we kick off at noon. I think this is why the whole one-per-year thing seems intriguing. Unless I'm partying all day, Saturdays feel really long when I'm waiting for that primetime kickoff.

3:30 games are my favorites but I do love the excitement of night games too. If we are winning we should be playing in prime time. Let Purdue and Illinois Play at noon

I strongly prefer noon to 3:30 or night games. I want to watch the other marquee matchups around the country which usually occur at those times. Otherwise I wouldn't give a shit

Yes as a CFB junkie the noon game slate has been atrocious the past year and everything is stacked into the 3:30 slot.  So you have to flip around between 3-5 games at 3:30 PM (and if UM is not I dont flip), and then at noon you are bored out of your mind.  I wish it was more spread out.

But i'm not as on board with it as everyone else. I kinda liked how Brandon had made night games a special thing - an extra date to circle on your calendar for the biggest non-rival home game. I also have fond memories as a student of Saturday being one big party - wake up, tailgate, watch football, nap, wake up, and it's Saturday night! Granted, I'm ignoring all the "man I should go to the library instead of party" nights, but still. Day games are kind of fun.

I mean I won't get all into a tizzy if we played every game at night, but I kind of liked having them as a rarity. Also I WILL get into a tizzy if NITE GAME UNIFORMZZZ remains a thing.

are a tough call.   They are good for the program because having games on during prime time is a very good thing.  Noon games are often junk nowadays and don't get nearly the attention they used to.  I think they can be incredibly exciting atmosphere wise as well.

But they are definitely tough on some fans no doubt.  And as the weather gets colder.....

Have your best non-conference game at night since it can be pretty hot during the first 2-3 weeks and a mid-October game at night. I'm not in favor of games in November being at night becuase the weather is a real question mark. The MSU/OSU game in East Lansing was the first week of November and an MSU buddy who went said it was brutally cold because of the mist and dampness in the air. That could bum the crowd out a bit and perhaps temper the excitement.

Good. Hackett is in touch with a growing section of the fanbase that wants night games. Not that I think games against Central Michigan should be played at night, but kids love night games. It's where the game is transitioning to.

We should all get used to it.

I just feel that there is a very big difference in the crowds. There is a large section of fans at Michigan games that have to be goaded into something as simplistic as the wave on 75 and sunny day. You also have groups in the student section that can be fickle at times and might decide to call it quits at the half if it's nasty.

These are things that neither pro football or the outdoor Wings game had to deal with.
