KV: So you graduated from Drury with a degree in History, you’re a history guy. If you could have dinner with three historical figures, living or dead, who would they be? And I’m ruling out football figures.

MB: This is probably not going to get a good review, but I’m going to say Adolf Hitler. It was obviously very sad and he had bad motives, but the way he was able to lead was second-to-none. How he rallied a group and a following, I want to know how he did that. Bad intentions of course, but you can’t deny he wasn’t a great leader.

He chose his words correctly...  Great does not always mean positive.  The man was a deranged psychopath, but he damn near took over the world.  You don't do that with average leadership skills.  In this case, the adjective is describing the overall magnitude of Hitler's actions, not the relative morality of them.  I certainly wouldn't want to have dinner with him though.

I clicked through to see the full text of the interview. Other "interesting" tidbits from this:

  1. The interviewer essentially agreed with him on Hitler
  2. Dude's 2nd choice was JFK, and his 3rd was Christopher Columbus.

Americans no longer study history, half truths and rumors from social media have supplanted scholarly researched history.

Hitler was an incompetent clown who led his country to ruin while killing tens of millions.  Hardly a guy you'd call a great leader.

Where is the strategic thinking in starting a war you have absolutely no chance of winning? If he had stopped at Poland, or Belgium, the international community probably would have allowed it. Maybe even take the Alsace region and politically annex a couple others.

He was a genocidal maniac bent on war and nothing else.

Lots of things--like invading Russia--seem like great ideas when you're all hopped up on meth. The guy wasn't a genius. He was a meglomaniac though. And a fucking monster. He merely exploited Germany's history of racism/anti-Semitism after a defeat in a catastrophic war and amid economic devastation. That isn't 3 dimensional chess. It's just race baiting. I'd rather have dinner with ANYONE ELSE IN HISTORY.

It isn’t that difficult to blame certain vulnerable populations for your issues when your country is Zimbabwe status.

Did he build a war machine and change the way modern war at the time was conducted with the blitzkrieg etc.

Sure, that’s where it ends. See nonsensical London bombings etc. But again, it isn’t difficult to drum up that type of support when your population is destroyed by the consequences of WW1 and you’re scapegoating one of your own for said troubles. You see leaders do this all throughout history.

Even if you think Hitler was a good dancer or a great painter or an excellent public speaker, you're better off racking your brain for someone else with those same qualities to dine with.  Also, you may be thinking about Hitler too much.
