Greg Mattison quote on Ryan Day: purely commentary on Day, or veiled shot at Harbaugh?
https://mobile.twitter.com/KyleRowland/status/1181610486137344000
Greg Mattison: "Ryan Day is who you want to work with. You want to work with guys who have great character, that care about players more than anything, that are very, very genuine, that are not egotistical, that are worried about being the best football coach they can be."
On the surface, it seems like a nice comment about Day, but also appears to be a dig at someone. Maybe Harbaugh?
Not positive that’s the intent, but ol’ Twitter sure sees it that way.

Just stop. Be concerned about something real.
October 8th, 2019 at 9:06 PM ^
Like the majority of coachspeak, this statement can be interpreted in whichever direction the audience is leaning. I don't see a dig at Harbaugh. I see a coordinator filling up time with harmless feel good happy words because he was stuck in front of a mic somewhere.
October 8th, 2019 at 9:10 PM ^
No it's a dig at Urban *eyer who he worked for @ Florida. He would never make a veiled insult of Jim Harbaugh. He and the Harbaughs go way, way back.
October 8th, 2019 at 9:14 PM ^
Posting Twitter hottakes usually doesn't end well for the OP.
And if my boss hired me for a 2, 3 or 4 times annual pay raise I'd say nice shit about them too!
October 8th, 2019 at 9:15 PM ^
Fuck Ohio and that turncoat SOB.
October 9th, 2019 at 12:31 AM ^
Can't spell cocksucker without o s u
October 8th, 2019 at 9:16 PM ^
Who’s Greg Mattison?
October 8th, 2019 at 9:17 PM ^
Fuck Benedict Mattison.
I'd love to have something insightful to say about this, but the guy is a two-time turncoat asshole. Fuck him.
October 8th, 2019 at 11:47 PM ^
Maybe take the next couple of plays off champ.
October 8th, 2019 at 9:23 PM ^
Just a nice comment.
STOP reading bs into a compliment.
October 8th, 2019 at 9:24 PM ^
Simply coach speak. Get over it.
October 8th, 2019 at 9:26 PM ^
I think you might be looking into this quote too much...like, who gives a shit?
October 8th, 2019 at 9:28 PM ^
I don't believe it was a shot at Harbaugh.
But I do think they had a falling out or at least couldn't come to an agreement.
October 8th, 2019 at 9:29 PM ^
The Mattison and Harbaugh families have been close friends for nearly forty years, but let’s not let that get in the way of the opinions of Twitter losers.
Mattison is a defensive coordinator, not a d line coach. That’s why he left.
October 8th, 2019 at 9:32 PM ^
I don’t know...Mattison said he only came back to Michigan for Brady Hoke, that he only stayed because he respected Harbaugh so much. He seems to be somebody who likes to be superlative about his current situation.
October 8th, 2019 at 9:38 PM ^
I don't think it has anything to do with Harbaugh. If he didn't like working for Harbaugh he had four years to decide he had enough and hang it up or look for a job elsewhere. He also knew the Harbaugh family for a long time before ever working for Jim, so I doubt he was surprised by anything. It's certainly possible (likely?) that he thinks Day is a better coach and boss than Harbaugh, but that doesn't necessarily mean he thinks Harbaugh was bad on either front.
October 8th, 2019 at 9:42 PM ^
tdtr (too dumb to read) why would you give a fuck? Don't bring this shit to the board.
October 8th, 2019 at 9:47 PM ^
Didn’t he work for another coach right after Harbaugh before Day took over... ?
October 8th, 2019 at 11:14 PM ^
No. Day hired him after firing basically Urban's entire defensive staff.
October 9th, 2019 at 7:32 AM ^
Haha...nope, he sure did not. He was hired by Day.
October 8th, 2019 at 9:50 PM ^
maybe its the truth
October 8th, 2019 at 9:52 PM ^
I don’t think that complimenting your new boss = insulting your old boss.
October 8th, 2019 at 9:59 PM ^
I don't think it's much more than a guy who wanted to get paid more money complimenting the guy who got him that money.
October 8th, 2019 at 10:00 PM ^
Should anyone care what that backstabbing, traitorous bitch says?
October 8th, 2019 at 10:04 PM ^
If comparing to anyone, I think it is Urban Meyer.
October 8th, 2019 at 10:10 PM ^
Typical coachspeak. Absolutely nothing wrong with what he said.
Moving on.
October 8th, 2019 at 10:16 PM ^
Then why did he work for Urban Meyer?
October 8th, 2019 at 10:24 PM ^
I think in order to see a shot at Harbaugh there you have to go in looking for one.
October 8th, 2019 at 10:25 PM ^
Fuck Greg mattison
October 8th, 2019 at 10:38 PM ^
Mattison says a lot of glowing things about everywhere he works.
Look up his comments coming back to work for Hoke.
October 8th, 2019 at 10:42 PM ^
All honesty, on paper Michigan does not have a shot on paper. Just got a good feeling about this year...
October 9th, 2019 at 12:29 AM ^
Better or worse than the last 13 of 14. Asking for a friend who doesnt beat against 93% odds.
October 8th, 2019 at 10:56 PM ^
If there is a subtweet in the message “You want to work with guys who have great character, that care about players more than anything, that are very, very genuine, that are not egotistical
If it’s a shot, it seems to be saying Harbaugh has character issues, doesn’t care about players and has an ego. You can shoehorn a 100 things into this narrative of you want.
Harbaugh isn’t genuine in the press release saying the offense is hitting its stride, doesn’t care about players could be a concussion reference or more than likely, two grown men can disagree without it being the fault of either. The only people who will ever know the truth are the people who were in the room at the time. Other than that it’s just a hot take field day.
October 8th, 2019 at 11:27 PM ^
We would all be happier if Twitter disappeared tomorrow. Might take a couple more hours to learn some relatively unimportant things, but that’s a price worth paying to be rid of it.
October 8th, 2019 at 11:30 PM ^
Not a dig at Harbaugh. Anything he says will be construed as a dig.
October 8th, 2019 at 11:45 PM ^
I don’t see it as a dig.
Day, by all accounts, is a legitimately nice guy and talented coach who happens to coach our rivals.
Mattison said nothing about it being a contrast with his previous job.
October 8th, 2019 at 11:46 PM ^
Twitter is a cesspool of stupidity. He’s saying positive things about his current boss. That’s it, no more to it
October 8th, 2019 at 11:58 PM ^
It just hit me why the massive overhaul...we have to be completely new to Mattison for this year's matchup, even if it means we suck ass for most of the season. Hell this notion has probably already been thought of but it hit me square in the nads just now.
October 9th, 2019 at 12:26 AM ^
Definitely a thickly veiled shot at Brady Hoke.
October 9th, 2019 at 12:30 AM ^
My memory is that Mattison has a good relationship with the Harbaughs and that he stayed in AA despite his demotion because of that. I don't think this was a shot at anyone.
October 9th, 2019 at 12:34 AM ^
Don't see it, but fuck Mattison
October 9th, 2019 at 12:44 AM ^
I think Peter Cetera said it best...
October 9th, 2019 at 12:45 AM ^
This is just how Greg Mattison talks.
October 9th, 2019 at 12:56 AM ^
Of course there is criticism of Harbaugh in his statement, and if there weren't I'm sure he would have clarified by comparing him to the other tremendous head coaches he has worked for in his career.
Everything OSU does is with one eye on Ann Arbor and that may well be why they firmly own football in the BigTen.
October 9th, 2019 at 3:45 AM ^
^ Well Said.
October 9th, 2019 at 5:00 AM ^
If there’s one think I think most of us would agree Harbaugh is NOT, it would be egotistical.
October 9th, 2019 at 8:06 AM ^
Some of these comments just make me ...Sigh.
October 9th, 2019 at 8:43 AM ^
Greg Mattison jumped ship the first time to Notre Dame.
Greg Mattison jumped ship the second time to Ohio State.
I don't like Greg Mattison.
October 9th, 2019 at 8:51 AM ^
Sounds like a dig. Maybe it's just how he said it -- Day is the guy you want to work with. Implication being not Harbaugh. If this is a dig, very petty of him. He already left to go work for the #1 rival. They have a 99.9999999999% chance of beating us. Again. What more does he want?
