Greg Mattison quote on Ryan Day: purely commentary on Day, or veiled shot at Harbaugh?

Greg Mattison: "Ryan Day is who you want to work with. You want to work with guys who have great character, that care about players more than anything, that are very, very genuine, that are not egotistical, that are worried about being the best football coach they can be."

On the surface, it seems like a nice comment about Day, but also appears to be a dig at someone. Maybe Harbaugh?

Not positive that’s the intent, but ol’ Twitter sure sees it that way.

Like the majority of coachspeak, this statement can be interpreted in whichever direction the audience is leaning.  I don't see a dig at Harbaugh.  I see a coordinator filling up time with harmless feel good happy words because he was stuck in front of a mic somewhere.

No it's a dig at Urban *eyer who he worked for @ Florida.  He would never make a veiled insult of Jim Harbaugh.  He and the Harbaughs go way, way back.

Posting Twitter hottakes usually doesn't end well for the OP.

And if my boss hired me for a 2, 3 or 4 times annual pay raise I'd say nice shit about them too!

I don't believe it was a shot at Harbaugh.

But I do think they had a falling out or at least couldn't come to an agreement.

The Mattison and Harbaugh families have been close friends for nearly forty years, but let’s not let that get in the way of the opinions of Twitter losers.

Mattison is a defensive coordinator, not a d line coach.  That’s why he left.

I don’t know...Mattison said he only came back to Michigan for Brady Hoke, that he only stayed because he respected Harbaugh so much. He seems to be somebody who likes to be superlative about his current situation.

I don't think it has anything to do with Harbaugh. If he didn't like working for Harbaugh he had four years to decide he had enough and hang it up or look for a job elsewhere. He also knew the Harbaugh family for a long time before ever working for Jim, so I doubt he was surprised by anything. It's certainly possible (likely?) that he thinks Day is a better coach and boss than Harbaugh, but that doesn't necessarily mean he thinks Harbaugh was bad on either front.

If there is a subtweet in the message “You want to work with guys who have great character, that care about players more than anything, that are very, very genuine, that are not egotistical

If it’s a shot, it seems to be saying Harbaugh has character issues, doesn’t care about players and has an ego.   You can shoehorn a 100 things into this narrative of you want.

Harbaugh isn’t genuine in the press release saying the offense is hitting its stride, doesn’t care about players could be a concussion reference or more than likely, two grown men can disagree without it being the fault of either.  The only people who will ever know the truth are the people who were in the room at the time.    Other than that it’s just a hot take field day.

We would all be happier if Twitter disappeared tomorrow.  Might take a couple more hours to learn some relatively unimportant things, but that’s a price worth paying to be rid of it.

I don’t see it as a dig.

Day, by all accounts, is a legitimately nice guy and talented coach who happens to coach our rivals.

Mattison said nothing about it being a contrast with his previous job.

It just hit me why the massive overhaul...we have to be completely new to Mattison for this year's matchup, even if it means we suck ass for most of the season.  Hell this notion has probably already been thought of but it hit me square in the nads just now.

My memory is that Mattison has a good relationship with the Harbaughs and that he stayed in AA despite his demotion because of that. I don't think this was a shot at anyone.

Of course there is criticism of Harbaugh in his statement, and if there weren't I'm sure he would have clarified by comparing him to the other tremendous head coaches he has worked for in his career.

Everything OSU does is with one eye on Ann Arbor and that may well be why they firmly own football in the BigTen.

Sounds like a dig. Maybe it's just how he said it -- Day is the guy you want to work with. Implication being not Harbaugh. If this is a dig, very petty of him. He already left to go work for the #1 rival. They have a 99.9999999999% chance of beating us. Again. What more does he want?
