Greatest moments as a Michigan fan

Submitted by coachdad on

I thought it would be cool for everyone to comment on their greatest moments being a Michigan fan. I have several so bear with me.These are in no particular order. First, I remember being about 8 and going to a UM basketball game. My Dad took me down on the turf at the Big House and I scored a touchdown wearing my Anthony Carter jersey and Michigan wristbands. Second, I was on a camping trip for spring break my junior year in highs school and listened to Michigan win the national championship in basketball. Glen Rice was a beast. Third, Desmond's catch in the endzone against Notre Dame. I was in college watching the game in my dorm surrounded by Notre Dame homers. Fourth, the OSU game in 1997. Enough said. The one that is the most personal to me is taking my 3 year old son to the Big House and getting to play catch with him and watching him run the same sidelines that so many of my heroes did. Last but not least, Jimmy coming home. There have been so many things that have stood out to me during a lifetime of being a Michigan fan, but these are some that I remember the most.

Huddled around the much smaller tv in the living room with my family as we watched "the shot" (my dad hates watching games with me because I "get too into it"). My dog freaked out when we went nuts after it went in

This is an easy one for me...1997 vs Ohio State with my Dad. I was 15 and we bought tickets for $50 each in August of that year (face: $32). Little did we know...

Anyway, we all know what happened and it remains one of our greatest memories together (Michigan or otherwise). We were in section 21 row 5. Incredible

Mine too! I was 11. First Michigan game I attended and it was with my dad. A few months later, I went back to aa with my mom for a doctor appt. I asked if we could drive by the stadium. When we drove by, the gates were open. She found a parking spot and we went in the stadium. I went down on the field and sprinted up and down the sideline reliving Woodson's punt return.

It wasn't my first game but it's the most memorable.

I remember when the gates were always open, too. My first basketball game (1994 or 1995) I remember taking a football down to the field with my Dad and reliving the Desmond Howard Notre Dame catch over and over again, which is another great Michigan Stadium memory.

Being a Michigan fan living in Syracuse, hearing him say he was going to Michigan was the greatest thing to me as a kid.  The day he signed his LOI, I got a Michigan football signed by him and has been a prized poession of mine.  All the talk was he was too small and couldn't play at Michigan, but safe to say he proved those doubters wrong.

Watched it on the family B&W TV, while my something-of-a-Purdue fan grandmother grumbled throughout, and (later) a Sparty friend of mine tried to tell me how Michigan had won because of "luck." I'd already been to several games at Michigan Stadium, but unfortunately would have to wait a few years to become a student and go to games regularly.

before a football game when I was a kid (not sure of year - around 1985 or so).

Also - the Brenden Morrison OT goal in 1996 to win championship.

Beating OSU in 1996 in C'bus.

Rumeal Robinson sinking free throws in 1989 to win championship.

Getting autographs from players on the field after spring games (in 1980s) as a kid.

I was at student at Bowling Green at the time.  Most of my fraternity brothers were from Ohio and OSU fans. They had all talked themselves into 1997 being their year because Michigan had ruined so many National title dreams for OSU in the 90's that it was their turn for some payback. They all decided to get a keg and watch the game together in an off campus house.  I was alone in our fraternity house with my roommate, who was #NFLOnly guy.

After the game, I heard the guys start filtering back into the house, doors slamming, expletives being shouted down the halls, and I decided to have some fun.  Ran through the halls singing "The Victors". Ended up at the bottom of a dog pile with about 50 brusies.  And it was worth every damn one of them.

There are so many. Watching the 1998 Rose Bowl on TV with two extremely bitter OSU fans. Rushing into the streets of Ann Arbor after watching Rumeal Robinson hit those two free throws to win the NC in 1989.

As for live events, there is one that stands out. I grew up near Pasadena and went to middle school next door to the Rose Bowl. Nevertheless, I did not attend a single Rose Bowl game as a youth nor even during my time as a student in Ann Arbor.

Finally, in 1993, my wife and I decided it was the right time. Tickets were relatively easy to get because the same two teams had played each other the previous year. Washington, who was coached by the legendary Don James, was very confident in a second consecutive victory over the Wolverines.

Instead, Tyrone Wheatley ran wild over the Huskies. The game was very exciting back-and-forth affair, with M finally winning 38-31. Wheatley rushed for 235 yards and 3 TDs.

'92 and '93 Final Fours with my dad. Yeah: we didn't win. Double yeah: all of the tarnished history there with the sanctions. But damn those were fun trips and good games.

'92 in Minneapolis was first time getting served a beer in a bar. Was only 18, but I took a chance that they wouldn't card a guy sitting with two 40-year-olds. I was right.

Favorite game was beating Pitino's Kentucky in '93. They were steamrolling their competition and were the favorite in the Final Four. I still remember getting mad at Bill Walton's newspaper column that week saying that Kentucky was going to give Michigan a lesson in how to play basketball. Hope he ate his words after that game.

Playing basketball with the Fab Five at Crisler before practice. Also in hindsight, having Weber score 50 against me in high school. How did that day become awesome as I got older?

Thanksgiving trip with my family in 1997. We left Saturday morning from metro Detroit and listened to the Ohio State game on the radio as we drove to New Orleans to spend Thanksgiving with the wife's family. I bought Michigan caps for my three daughters (blue with block M) the wife and I. I bought two more white caps with the block M and placed them in the rear window of my new alpine white BMW 5 series taking it's maiden voyage road trip. My daughters were 12, 8 and 6. We continued on into SEC country sporting M gear all the way. We would always spend the night in Tennessee (halfway point) when we drove down, and we took photos of our three girls wearing their M caps in Tennessee.

Now, on the mantle is that photo of my girls in their Michigan caps from '97 at ages 12, 8 and 6 framed next to photos of each of them wearing their Michigan graduation caps from their respective M graduations.

Go Blue.

2011 Notre Dame. My dad said the game was over and wanted to leave. I was having none of it and told him I'd meet him at the car. He'll never live that down.

All of these were at Michigan Stadium.

The first one that comes to mind: Henne to Manningham, Penn State, 2005. I took my son to the game; he had just turned five. At the time, I told him that that might be the best game he would ever see in Michigan Stadium.  So far, it has been---and he still remembers it.

Number two is probably UTL-I. It wasn't a win-on-the-last-second play, so not *quite* as dramatic, but the fact that no one wanted to go home for a good long while after it was done was something I'll never forget.

Number three: the MSU 3OT game. I took my father, who is an MSU grad. Before the game, I asked him who he was rooting for. He graciously responded, "I just want to see a good game." When MSU was up 17, I turned to him and said, "Well, sorry the game wasn't competitive." And then, THAT happened.

Honorable mention: the Big Chill.  My son, my father, and my father in law. We were too low to see much, but having the four of us there was a fond memory.

and at the airport the guy at Popeye's chicken had a name tag that said "My name is MISHGUN".  As I was boarding the plane there was a 18 year oldish guy that had a WIsconsin shirt on and I gave him a "GO BLUE!" and he said he liked blue too.  He had a name tag on the read "Jarrell Peppers"  I told that was ironic and he laughed and agreed.  I wish I had take pics, 'cause pics or it didn't happen.  Not worthy of cool story bro, but it just happened.

During my time at Michigan:

1. UTL II. I love being a part of record-breaking games.

2. The first 10 minutes of the Michigan-Louisville game. I was at Crisler for the watch party and man, goosebumps just thinking about it.

3. Michigan Hockey vs. Miami OH. 2013 game I think? Chris Brown with his circus shot. FIghts breaking out. Great atmosphere.

4. Michigan-Illinois 2010. Because NBA score.

1969 (I'm a lot older than most of you...) I was in Columbus in 1968 and watched Woody try for 2 points after putting 50 on us. Revenge was more than sweet... Still  THE GREATEST WIN in Michigan football history!

I'm too late for anyone to see this, but I'm chiming in anyway. Michigan over OSU in 76, 77, and 78. Anthony Carter' entire career The whole 97 season, as others have said. The PSU and OSU games were special highlights, and the Rose Bowl, of course.
