Can people not just respect one another?Don't put your hands on another human being without their consentm regardless. I don't care if they are a man or a woman, a child or an adult, white or black, jewish or muslim. Just treat people with respect.

So if he put his hand on her back, to get her attention to ask her a question, he should be charged with sexual assault?

I'm simply asking, because I've seen over a half-dozen posts of people assuming he grabbed her ass, when NOTHING has come out about what actually happened.  How about we let some actual facts surface before we go off?

Believe me, I have a teenage daughter.  If he groped her, I agree, he should be punished to the full extent of the law, but we have no clue what actually happened at this point.

...suffering from concept creep on this issue.  It's possible that he squeezed by someone in a crowd and brushed her thigh with the palm of his hand.  It's also possible that he grabbed a woman's breast without permission.  We don't know, but the second act strikes me as so much worse than the first that they should not be put under the same umbrella definition.

And the latter that you described is a lot less worse than an LTT situation or alleged Brandon Gibson situation.

Honestly, if the scenario you described is what occurred and the girl felt strongly about it, a couple game suspension, an apology and probation with a warning that should it happen again, you're done, should be enough (and is probably more than enough).

(I'm not factoring in the running from the cops, underage drinking, etc. That obviously changes things)

I am going to sound old here... but either that headline is purposely misleading or the definition of "sexual assault" has changed immensely since my younger years.

NOT THAT I AM IN ANY WAY CONDONING HIS ACTIONS -- but "grabbing a girl" in line for the bar is not what I think of when I read Sexual Assualt.

Glad I read the link - not sure what his punishment should be but I am off the immediately expel bandwagon - at least until more comes out.

Where can I report FMH for his/her blatant micro-aggression towards me? Maybe he/she deserves a time out from the blog!!!

In seriousness I am a bit tired of this hyper-sensitive BS we see today. Am I condoning what GP did? No. Would I - even as a drunk college student - ever do something similar? No. Would I have been embarrassed and upset and apologetic to the woman if one of my buddies had done this back then? Absolutely. I still think kicking a kid out of school and off the team before this is worked out legally is overkill.

JH seems like a hard ass in this area so either he knows the full story and worked out what he felt was an appropriate punishment or maybe the "grabbing a young lady" wasn't part of the story he received when the incident first came up.

Not directly applicable but the EL police are notoriously hard asses to the students. A friend of my brother in law did something similar while a MSU student (the drinking underage and running part) and the ELPD added a destruction of public property charge because he had knocked over a trash can while trying to get away.

From the MCL on criminal sexual conduct:

"Sexual contact" includes the intentional touching of the victim's or actor's intimate parts or the intentional touching of the clothing covering the immediate area of the victim's or actor's intimate parts.

"Intimate parts" includes the primary genital area, groin, inner thigh, buttock, or breast of a human being.

A person is guilty of criminal sexual conduct in the fourth degree if he or she engages in sexual contact with another person and if any of the following circumstances exist:

(v) When the actor achieves the sexual contact through concealment or by the element of surprise.

Yes, you (and I) are old. In our generation that would have been playing around. Would maybe get you slapped. At worst, the boyfriend would knock you around a bit. Your friends would make fun of you for months. That would be it, and well deserved.

However, this generation doesn't play that. They are (to me) incredibly oversensitve. Grant Perry is part of this generation, and should definitly know better.

Sexual assualt has always included conduct that generally hasn't in the past resulted in criminal charges.  It's taken more seriously today, and rightfully so.  I'm assuming you have never been a woman who has had her boob grabbed on the subway, or in a crowded bar, etc.  It's a violation of the victim's personal space and autonomy.  It is rightfully called a crime.  It is not "playing around" or whatever anyone else wants to use to describe degrading conduct in a way that makes it sound not so bad.

That being said, we don't know the basis for the charge in this case and whether it is a rightful charge.

Also, the frequency with which sexual assault and rape is used interchangeably is really the problem here (for everyone).  Rape is sexual assault, but sexual assault does not automatically mean rape.

I recall someone saying he got a MIP back when he missed a game and news got out that he got in trouble in EL. News about resisting arrest and sexual assault is very surprising though. Let's see how this unfolds rather than passing judgement right away.

Fuck that, yes I will pass judgement for now.  He absolutely gets his due process, but that has to do with the government and him.  Him playing football is independent of that.  This is how athletes get away with this shit isn't it?  'Let's see how it plays out?' and then bam, graduated, gone to NFL, transfer, whaterver without any meaningful impact on the perpetrator.  Fuck that.  I say he never puts on the Maize and Blue again until it's resolved.  And if he's one of the like 3% or whatever of falsely accused people, then I will gladly apologize to him and he has a redshirt year, and then I hope whoever makes the false allegation is punished to the fullest extent of the law.

ticky-tack ridiculousness here in michigan.   hesitate to give the cop your license and some of them are thinking of filing a felony for 'resisting, obstructing or delaying' an officer.   in my day that meant you got in a fight and had to duke it out with the crook.  now they file them for nonsense.

the statute is as follows:Sec. 81d. (1) Except as provided in subsections (2), (3), and (4), an individual who assaults, batters, wounds, resists, obstructs, opposes, or endangers a person who the individual knows or has reason to know is performing his or her duties is guilty of a felony punishable by imprisonment for not more than 2 years or a fine of not more than $2,000.00, or both.

(2) An individual who assaults, batters, wounds, resists, obstructs, opposes, or endangers a person who the individual knows or has reason to know is performing his or her duties causing a bodily injury requiring medical attention or medical care to that person is guilty of a felony punishable by imprisonment for not more than 4 years or a fine of not more than $5,000.00, or both.

maybe perry done wrong, maybe not.  my only point is that it is quite common for the reality of the behavior to be incredibly minor relative the headline where everybody wants to say, 'crucify!'

Why don't you file a fucking FOIA request and find out what he is ALLEGED to have done before you act as judge, jury and executioner.

Most of us find sexual assault to be a hideous act but I also believe that things aren't always the way they appear at first blush when published in a media piece that is helped by the number of hits a story receives.

Not that I have any more knowledge of this situation, or the subsequent suspension, than everyone else, but I don't see Harbaugh letting him come back if he knew the full extent. Especially given his track record of coming down much harder on players for less than this. Seems possible that he found out that an incident occured, but Perry just turned himself in this week, so it could be that the felonies weren't known at the time.

Good god.  Did he dress again after this incident?

I know the legal process has to play out and he deserves due process, but for fuck's sake, that has nothing to do with playing college football.  I honestly cannot remember if he suited up after this, but I'll be disgusted in UM if he did.  I so sick of this shit where people commit sexual assult and they get the slappiest of wrist slaps.  Which basically means 'eh, we don't care so much about this'.  Even if the staff doesn't feel it warrents a full dismissal right now, he should be suspended until the legal process resolves.  And hell, even if he pleads to a lesser offense or something, I think that warrents dismissal.  This sexual assult crap has to stop.

SalvatoreQuattro

He did dress and he did play.

Sexual assault is not going to stop regardless of how serious we view it. We view murder in the harshest light yet it keeps happening
The reality is that these behaviors occur naturally. The only thing we can do is to continue to punish it harshly and to teach people not to do it.

Of course sexual assult with keep happening no matter what we do.  But let's not pretend that sexual assult on college campuses isn't a huge issue.  And what do you think would happen if the headline was 'Grant Perry Arriainged for First Degree Murder'?  You think we would be taking a 'well let's see how it plays out and know all the facts' additude?

SalvatoreQuattro

December 22nd, 2016 at 3:02 PM ^

He still would be suspended.

Sexual assault is huge issue society-wise, not just on college campuses. Hell, it is a mankind issue. This problem goes right to the core of our being. It is a profound problem that requires much greater resources and attention than colleges can give it.

Quick Question - did you read the article? As noted by myself and others above the "sexual assault" described is far different than what I assumed when I saw the thread/headline.

My guess is "no" but I am curious if you still feel this way after reading the report. Not trying to bash - I was mental composing a very similar comment to yours before I clicked the link. -- (Again not condoning anything he actually did)

Fair enough. It seems everyone else more than had the "outrage without having the facts" part down so I was thinking of other fallout. Time and place and all that but it is still a relevant thought given we may have a scholarship slot thanks to Wilson going to UGA and our expected starting slot WR has just been suspended indefinitely.
