Germany holding concerts to test spread of covid at indoor events
‘Researchers directed volunteers to run three scenarios -- one that simulated a concert pre-coronavirus, a second simulating a concert during the pandemic, with improved hygiene measures in place, and a third, with reduced participants. Scientists will gather the data, apply a mathematical model, and evaluate the hygiene interventions, with conclusions ready by the end of the year.“

pro tip, never apologize, that's how they know you're not a native.

Yeah I mean my limited vocabulary, spotty grammar, and obvious accent wouldn’t give it away, but I’m sure apologizing will LOL.
Hahah I kid, thanks for the tip though. It’s good to gain some insight from somebody actually IN Germany.

Press release from Greg Sankey:
"Researchers at ACC, BIG12, and SEC-affiliated institutions are directing athletic volunteers to test the spread of Covid-19 at outdoor events this fall. Volunteers, Tigers, Bulldogs, Crimson Tides, other Tigers, Sooners, Cowboys, and others will simulate contact sporting events with and without hygiene measures. Scientists will gather the data, apply a mathematical model, and evaluate the hygiene interventions, with conclusions ready by the end of the year after the playoffs.“

No researchers needed. Coronavirus, let alone its related hysteria, not contagious or applicable to anyone in those conferences. .

How did that pass an ethics committee?
August 22nd, 2020 at 2:28 PM ^
That's a terrific question. I suppose all participants would need to be made aware of all possible risks, up to and including death?
That being said, I love to see stuff like this. As a major live music addict, I can't understate how much I want to be back at a concert.
August 22nd, 2020 at 2:52 PM ^
Can’t understate it? We get it, you really hate live concerts.
August 22nd, 2020 at 5:22 PM ^
Haha wow. Good catch and quite the brain fart.
August 22nd, 2020 at 2:51 PM ^
Full testing of everyone attending, low rates of positivity locally, everyone in N-95 mask. What level of safety are you expecting because this seems pretty safe.
August 22nd, 2020 at 3:19 PM ^
Ethics don't matter anymore. Everything's political. If a position falls within what people's party leadership tells them to believe, then it's ethical.

New York state is allowing gyms to re-open at reduced capacity starting next week. I joked to a friend that they were using it as a "experiment" to see if they can begin to allow indoor seating in restaurants again. Right now, restaurants are allowed to serve tables outdoors, but of course that's not going to be much help to restaurants when late fall and winter rolls around in New York, so there's got to be a strong incentive to try to find a solution before then.
But state officials have to figure that if a bunch of sweaty, hard-breathing people manage to work out inside of a gym for a couple months without triggering a spike in cases, then surely it ought to be okay to let folks sit down at an indoor restaurant.
This is probably much closer to the truth than people realize - in essence, everything that states are doing with respect to re-opening in stages is an experiment. Open things a little, see what happens, open things a little more, see what happens, etc.

"... due to a low prevalence of the virus in the states of Saxony and Lower Saxony, participating in the study was low risk for volunteers, who underwent coronavirus testing 48 hours before participation, and were wearing masks during the show. "It's safer than flying to Majorca," he said."
Is "safer than flying to Majorca" one of those obscure German sayings?

It's like saying, "It's safer than going to a back-to-school COVID party in Stillwater, OK."

Germany is averaging less then 2000 new cases a day and in the last month has only had 3 days where they've reported 10 or more deaths. It's not gone, but they seem to have it under control pretty well.
August 22nd, 2020 at 6:19 PM ^
Wait so we're now purposefully spreading covid ?
A controlled concert environment will never be like a real concert full of crazed fans
