Gary still with a bum shoulder, per Ian Rapoport
A labrum tear that happened during the season. Apparently, the goal will be to put off surgery until after the 2019 season.
This may cause a drop in his draft stock, but could wind up being a gift for a playoff team in the latter part of the first round who can take the risk and maybe have him go easy his rookie year.
His name is on his business, he’s responsible for everything. Rashan just seems to be rushing things. He should be focusing on getting healthy and improving his draft stock.
Good thing Rashan has already proved he can do more than one thing at a time.
Like get a 3.0 at Michigan and play football at an elite level.
Christ. Those things are NOT mutually exclusive.
And who the FUCK are YOU to tell Rashan what he "should" be doing. Worry about your own damn life and decisions.
Rashan Gary didn't start a gang, he's not moonlighting as a drug dealer, he's not robbing banks. As long as he's not harming or a threat to society, let the man do what he wants to do without you posting on a message board what he should or shouldn't be doing. Especially when you have no fucking idea if he's already doing it.
I repeat...if Rashan or Jabrill won championships and beat OSU, the ENTIRE narrative is different.
Rashan's agency is an example of THE MICHIGAN DIFFERENCE. If Jabrill won a championship and beat OSU, same thing.
What a joke.

I'm confused - he isn't getting it fixed until next offseason? Wouldnt there be time to have surgery post-combine and be ready for the season? I have no idea what a recovery time for a labrum tear surgery would be, I think there's various rookie camps and stuf fin July but even that would have given him 5 months recovery time, and if he just missed camp altogether he'd have another month or two to get ready for the early part of the season. Wondering what the rational would be here for waiting an entire NFL season.
April 23rd, 2019 at 11:31 AM ^
He didn't get his shoulder fixed before this last season either. Either he's getting some really terrible medical advice, or he's one of those people who are very nervous about surgeries and think they can avoid them by doing rehab.
April 23rd, 2019 at 10:02 AM ^
Duh, thanks, Rapoport. He never had surgery, of course he still has it. This isn't breaking news, and he also repped 26 times on the bench at the combine, so it's clearly not debilitating.
April 23rd, 2019 at 10:19 AM ^
As our resident "doctor" I'll take your advice - he's obviously played with it for a while now and it sounds like one of those things that can get aggravated and feel worse at times throughout the season - i'm sure the wear and tear of a season would do that even if he wasn't injured. But why not fix it before your NFL career? Just concerned he could aggravate it early in camp or pre-season and never produce like he could otherwise until it's repaired. i dunno -not my life or my business but for a brand-savvy guy who's got a long-term NFL career potential this isn't the route I would have thought he'd go.
April 23rd, 2019 at 10:32 AM ^
He's been battling this injury over multiple seasons and missed time and not produced much relative to his physical talents, so I would say it has been somewhat debilitating and likely will continue to be until he gets it fixed.
Yeah labral tears have more to do with the stability of the shoulder than straight line strength. Bench pressing vs. having to manipulate your shoulder in all kinds of different fashions when rushing the passer are very different actions.
The shoulder works on more of a suction mechanism. Imagine a basketball(humerus) connected to a plunger(glenoid/labrum). The basketball is obviously way bigger than the plunger, but stays connected well due to suction. If you tear the plunger the ball won't stay on very well and it creates a really sloppy motion that can be incredibly painful during contact.

This is why I always thought Gary deserved defending from some of the fan base. I thought he played hurt all year. He could have shut it down but he continued to contribute. I had a labrum and it is so frustrating. Just to examine it that had to shoot dye into it which was miserable. They don't want to operate on it because shoulders operations are no good but the injury really limits you. I think he is a steal if he gets healthy.
April 23rd, 2019 at 10:38 AM ^
I agree. It would have been easy for him to shut it down for the season like Bosa, but he battled through it as best as he could. I get how the Rashan Gary era was largely a disappointment for us fans but I hope he still has best football in front of him and will prove the doubters wrong.
April 23rd, 2019 at 10:48 AM ^
Hell yeah the first time I got that dye it was painful but the second time didnt feel a thing. It all depends on who is injecting. But that first time made me almost not get it again it is a different pain and hurts
April 23rd, 2019 at 10:59 AM ^
I got a 20cc injection in my shoulder and I didn't even feel it. I'm going to guess skill plays a part.
April 23rd, 2019 at 12:54 PM ^
Yeah, and even when the talk is fairly innocent, criticism must get really old. I'd keep my headphones on, too.
April 23rd, 2019 at 10:19 AM ^
Wow. So you think you had a bad couple of days to start the week?
Rashan Gary has had a really bad couple of days.
April 23rd, 2019 at 10:20 AM ^
Maybe he should have stayed another year to get healthy and get a degree. A potentially short NFL career w/ no degree from college would suck.
April 23rd, 2019 at 10:39 AM ^
He can always come back and finish his last semester when he's done with football.
April 23rd, 2019 at 10:28 AM ^
Hate to hear that. But could explain why it "seemed" like he didn't particularly play as we had hoped this past season.

Starting a company with a wunderlic score of 9?? Correct me if I’m wrong but I think that score makes you functionally Illiterate right?
That is a bad look for M, his HS, shit even his grade school and his mama own a piece of that travesty
April 23rd, 2019 at 10:42 AM ^
I think you went right up to the line in the first sentence, and then completely obliterated the line in the second.
April 23rd, 2019 at 10:51 AM ^
He's dyslexic
You can absolutely have dyslexia and be functionally illiterate.
Where did people get this idea that you can't be illiterate if you have dyslexia?
There's a chance, give his score, Gary is functionally illiterate. That's nothing to he ashamed of given his dyslexia. But dyslexia absolutely can make you illiterate - that seems pretty self explanatory
Is that true? Is it known that he is actually dyslexic? If so I apologize for the comments. Certainly standardized tests for people that suffer from that are like kryptonite for superman. I was not aware that he had ever been diagnosed with that disorder.
April 23rd, 2019 at 10:54 AM ^
Might be that you’re a bad look for M, your HS, your grade school, and even your mama.
Dude is dyslexic... standardized, time based word tests probably aren’t the best way to measure his intelligence.
April 23rd, 2019 at 11:02 AM ^
Even if you were right, how's it a bad look to offer the kid the best education he can get while trying to prepare him to take advantage of his natural gifts by pursuing a career in the NFL?
These young men can still be excellent ambassadors for the university through their lives regardless of test scores.
April 23rd, 2019 at 11:32 AM ^
You don't know what the word "travesty" means. That's a bad look for you, M, your HS, shit even your momma own a piece of that,.
Travesty is basically a false or absurd representation of something.
So, using travesty to describe someone who is being represented (by a piece of paper) as a HS graduate and having completed 3yrs of advanced education and a top university while only able to score as functionally illiterate on a common standardized test is a pretty fair use of the word travesty.
Having said that, as I noted above. I was unaware that he had been diagnosed with dyslexia which would clearly explain his test score. In which case it is NOT a travesty by the definition because his ridiculously low test score can be explained and therefore his previous accreditations are not an absurd misrepresentation of his intelligence.
Without the diagnosis of dyslexia? Its a fucking travesty.
I blow standardized tests away. I got a perfect score on the PSATs, which earned me a National Merit Scholarship, which got me into my choice of schools with lots of financial aid. Didn't crack 1500 on the SATs, but came close. Etc. etc. White, male, good schools, read voraciously-- I was born and raised to take standardized tests.
Out of curiosity, I took the sample Wonderlic test yesterday. You are given 12 minutes. The first question I got was a jumble of like 7 letters, you're supposed to form a word out of them. Now, if I had been in genuine "my future is at stake" test-taking mode, I would have spent 20 seconds on it, then moved on to the next question. But I had been told that the first 10 questions are easy, and I couldn't believe that I wasn't seeing a word, so I kept at it. I spent two full minutes on it and still never saw the word, wound up moving on to the next question.
As a result, I only made it through 26 questions. I missed one other question besides the first, giving me a score of 24. Given the I answered 25 questions in ten minutes, I would have answered another 5 questions or so if I had passed on the first one when I should have, and I was getting almost all of them right, so that would have put my score at 29, which still isn't anything to write home about.
I had three questions that were re-arranging letters to form a word; I can't fathom how hard that would be for someone with dyslexia. If he didn't practice taking it beforehand, and didn't understand test-taking strategies, I could see getting a wretched score; while if that same person had a strategy to take the test (immediately pass on letter rearranging questions, immediately pass on questions that are three lines of text or longer, etc.), he might score much, much better.
TL;DR I have much more sympathy for Gary and judge him much less harshly after actually taking the test myself.
April 23rd, 2019 at 10:44 AM ^
I have had 2 of them and it is the longest and hardest shoulder surgery to come back from. Also it can affect the biceps tendon also which adds to extra recovery time. Shoulder surgeries are no joke. I have had 3 total surgeries but it has never been right since the first. Cant come back to early because it is easy to tear again. Takes about a year or more to get 100% again if ever.
April 23rd, 2019 at 11:09 AM ^
Ditto.
I'm going on 23 years since an injury and stuff still isn't right.
I've been walking around with a labrum tear for about eight years, and this is why I have avoided surgery. I've been doing exercises to compensate for it.
April 23rd, 2019 at 10:47 AM ^
Yeah, to me this is way more relevant to his success in the NFL than a score on a test. If he can't keep his shoulder healthy he's not going to be able to stick on the field.
Hopefully he can recover. Might get him into a better situation on a team that can give him a year to recover.

How do you bench 26 reps with a torn labrum?
That just doesn't seem possible ... maybe he had a torn labrum at some point in his career but it must have healed enough to put up 26 reps at the combine or did he rep those one-armed?
April 23rd, 2019 at 11:30 AM ^
I do not work out at all and I can do like 50 or even 100 bench press reps. I would just need to do it with very little weight on the bar.
April 23rd, 2019 at 12:54 PM ^
Have you tried 100 reps with just the bar? It's harder than you think.
Ha! I bet it is. I think the only bar I could bench press 100 times would be a Snickers.

Confirmed: Rashan to the Raiders!
April 23rd, 2019 at 11:44 AM ^
He'll get drafted and play football at some point.
Thats all I know.
Respect to Rashan for playing through the injury last couple years. True Michigan Man in my books
It will be interesting to see how this (if at all) affects where he gets drafted. Same with Simmons (ACL) and Sweat (alleged heart condition). All 3 are top talents.
Maybe he has a team in mind and this is his way to ensure he slips to the spot he wants. One thing we’ve learned about Rashan Gary is that he’s generally a couple steps ahead of whatever you think he’s doing.
Keep dropping. Hope he makes it to #32.
Hate to say it but it looks like Rashan is heading towards Vernon Gholston land. The injury, lack of production in college, lack of secondary rush moves and even the wonderlich are all negative signs. He could drop to the 2nd round. Hope he is smart with his money.
If this is true, it was a colossal blunder for Gary not to come back for his senior season.
If he slips into the second round, this decision will cost him millions.
If "potential" is still being used after 3 years of college on one of the top D's in the nation, it's either a coaching or player problem. Not that injuries weren't a factor, but c'mon, he had 3 years to do something here. He is still a freak athlete with limited moves.
When flying into Marquette on a Sunday night, B dubs was literally the only thing open and it happened to be conveniently, staggering distance from the Country Inn & Suites. I first tried a Black&Blue there.
I can only imagine how painful it must be to be that size and speed and have impact fights with 650lbs of guard and tackle.
It's not clear he was going to be taken in the 1st round anyway.
This guy should go in the 1st round:
He should just skip the NFL and run with the sports agency
