Gary still with a bum shoulder, per Ian Rapoport

Submitted by Larry Appleton on April 23rd, 2019 at 9:51 AM

LINK.

A labrum tear that happened during the season.  Apparently, the goal will be to put off surgery until after the 2019 season.

This may cause a drop in his draft stock, but could wind up being a gift for a playoff team in the latter part of the first round who can take the risk and maybe have him go easy his rookie year.

His name is on his business, he’s responsible for everything. Rashan just seems to be rushing things. He should be focusing on getting healthy and improving his draft stock.

Good thing Rashan has already proved he can do more than one thing at a time.

Like get a 3.0 at Michigan and play football at an elite level.

Christ. Those things are NOT mutually exclusive.

And who the FUCK are YOU to tell Rashan what he "should" be doing. Worry about your own damn life and decisions.

Rashan Gary didn't start a gang, he's not moonlighting as a drug dealer, he's not robbing banks. As long as he's not harming or a threat to society, let the man do what he wants to do without you posting on a message board what he should or shouldn't be doing. Especially when you have no fucking idea if he's already doing it.

I'm confused - he isn't getting it fixed until next offseason? Wouldnt there be time to have surgery post-combine and be ready for the season? I have no idea what a recovery time for a labrum tear surgery would be, I think there's various rookie camps and stuf fin July but even that would have given him 5 months recovery time, and if he just missed camp altogether he'd have another month or two to get ready for the early part of the season. Wondering what the rational would be here for waiting an entire NFL season.

Duh, thanks, Rapoport. He never had surgery, of course he still has it. This isn't breaking news, and he also repped 26 times on the bench at the combine, so it's clearly not debilitating.

As our resident "doctor" I'll take your advice -  he's obviously played with it for a while now and it sounds like one of those things that can get aggravated and feel worse at times throughout the season - i'm sure the wear and tear of a season would do that even if he wasn't injured. But why not fix it before your NFL career? Just concerned he could aggravate it early in camp or pre-season and never produce like he could otherwise until it's repaired. i dunno -not my life or my business but for a brand-savvy guy who's got a long-term NFL career potential this isn't the route I would have thought he'd go.

Yeah labral tears have more to do with the stability of the shoulder than straight line strength.  Bench pressing vs. having to manipulate your shoulder in all kinds of different fashions when rushing the passer are very different actions.

The shoulder works on more of a suction mechanism.  Imagine a basketball(humerus) connected to a plunger(glenoid/labrum). The basketball is obviously way bigger than the plunger, but stays connected well due to suction. If you tear the plunger the ball won't stay on very well and it creates a really sloppy motion that can be incredibly painful during contact.

This is why I always thought Gary deserved defending from some of the fan base.  I thought he played hurt all year.  He could have shut it down but he continued to contribute.  I had a labrum and it is so frustrating.  Just to examine it that had to shoot dye into it which was miserable. They don't want to operate on it because shoulders operations are no good but the injury really limits you.  I think he is a steal if he gets healthy.

Hate to hear that. But could explain why it "seemed" like he didn't particularly play as we had hoped this past season.

Starting a company with a wunderlic score of 9?? Correct me if I’m wrong but I think that score makes you functionally Illiterate right?

That is a bad look for M, his HS, shit even his grade school and his mama own a piece of that travesty

You can absolutely have dyslexia and be functionally illiterate.

Where did people get this idea that you can't be illiterate if you have dyslexia?

There's a chance, give his score, Gary is functionally illiterate. That's nothing to he ashamed of given his dyslexia. But dyslexia absolutely can make you illiterate - that seems pretty self explanatory

Even if you were right, how's it a bad look to offer the kid the best education he can get while trying to prepare him to take advantage of his natural gifts by pursuing a career in the NFL?

These young men can still be excellent ambassadors for the university through their lives regardless of test scores.

Travesty is basically a false or absurd representation of something.

So, using travesty to describe someone who is being represented (by a piece of paper) as a HS graduate and having completed 3yrs of advanced education and a top university while only able to score as functionally illiterate on a common standardized test is a pretty fair use of the word travesty.

Having said that, as I noted above. I was unaware that he had been diagnosed with dyslexia which would clearly explain his test score. In which case it is NOT a travesty by the definition because his ridiculously low test score can be explained and therefore his previous accreditations are not an absurd misrepresentation of his intelligence.

Without the diagnosis of dyslexia? Its a fucking travesty.

I blow standardized tests away.  I got a perfect score on the PSATs, which earned me a National Merit Scholarship, which got me into my choice of schools with lots of financial aid.  Didn't crack 1500 on the SATs, but came close.  Etc. etc.  White, male, good schools, read voraciously-- I was born and raised to take standardized tests.

Out of curiosity, I took the sample Wonderlic test yesterday.  You are given 12 minutes.  The first question I got was a jumble of like 7 letters, you're supposed to form a word out of them.  Now, if I had been in genuine "my future is at stake" test-taking mode, I would have spent 20 seconds on it, then moved on to the next question.  But I had been told that the first 10 questions are easy, and I couldn't believe that I wasn't seeing a word, so I kept at it.  I spent two full minutes on it and still never saw the word, wound up moving on to the next question.

As a result, I only made it through 26 questions.  I missed one other question besides the first, giving me a score of 24.  Given the I answered 25 questions in ten minutes, I would have answered another 5 questions or so if I had passed on the first one when I should have, and I was getting almost all of them right, so that would have put my score at 29, which still isn't anything to write home about.

I had three questions that were re-arranging letters to form a word; I can't fathom how hard that would be for someone with dyslexia.  If he didn't practice taking it beforehand, and didn't understand test-taking strategies, I could see getting a wretched score; while if that same person had a strategy to take the test (immediately pass on letter rearranging questions, immediately pass on questions that are three lines of text or longer, etc.), he might score much, much better.

TL;DR I have much more sympathy for Gary and judge him much less harshly after actually taking the test myself.

I have had 2 of them and it is the longest and hardest shoulder surgery to come back from.  Also it can affect the biceps tendon also which adds to extra recovery time.  Shoulder surgeries are no joke.  I have had 3 total surgeries but it has never been right since the first.  Cant come back to early because it is easy to tear again.  Takes about a year or more to get 100% again if ever.

Yeah, to me this is way more relevant to his success in the NFL than a score on a test.  If he can't keep his shoulder healthy he's not going to be able to stick on the field.

Hopefully he can recover.  Might get him into a better situation on a team that can give him a year to recover.

How do you bench 26 reps with a torn labrum?

That just doesn't seem possible ... maybe he had a torn labrum at some point in his career but it must have healed enough to put up 26 reps at the combine or did he rep those one-armed?

It will be interesting to see how this (if at all) affects where he gets drafted.  Same with Simmons (ACL) and Sweat (alleged heart condition).  All 3 are top talents.

Maybe he has a team in mind and this is his way to ensure he slips to the spot he wants.   One thing we’ve learned about Rashan Gary is that he’s generally a couple steps ahead of whatever you think he’s doing.

Hate to say it but it looks like Rashan is heading towards Vernon Gholston land.  The injury, lack of production in college, lack of secondary rush moves and even the wonderlich are all negative signs.  He could drop to the 2nd round.  Hope he is smart with his money.

If this is true, it was a colossal blunder for Gary not to come back for his senior season.

If he slips into the second round, this decision will cost him millions.

If "potential" is still being used after 3 years of college on one of the top D's in the nation, it's either a coaching or player problem.  Not that injuries weren't a factor, but c'mon, he had 3 years to do something here.  He is still a freak athlete with limited moves.

When flying into Marquette on a Sunday night, B dubs was literally the only thing open and it happened to be conveniently, staggering distance from the Country Inn & Suites.  I first tried a Black&Blue there.
