Fun read on the spring game
Maybe Brandon should be an enrolled in a sound journalism school. Then his articles would be more concise, organized and definitely.
I agree with everything you said, but given the lack of free info on the Spring Game I was happy to read it anyway despite the author.
I imagine we will get some of the premium stuff - plus any MGoInsider info -summarized this week. I saw teases on Twitter from both Rivals and 247 for their premium scoops.
Brandon Brown is such a bad writer that I blocked him on my Twitter account a couple months ago. I believe he's the one and only account I've ever bothered to block.
Lol same, I don’t mind criticizing Harbs. But the way he goes about it, it’s just a bunch of hit pieces. Most of his content is pretty blatantly stolen form VIP sites too.
Old timers like Rob F will remember that Brandon Brown got his start right her on MGoBlog trying to replicate the career path that Tom VH blazed. But if I get all Lloyd Bentsen on his ass, I knew Tom VH. Tom VH interacted with me on a message board. Mr. Brown, you are no Tom VH.
I think our fanbase is much better with low or almost no expectations. Its 3 years too late but i think weve finally come to grips with reality. The minute i see a tempo offense is when i will start watching. If we cant move the ball with pace we are doomed. We arent Wisconsin or old school bama so we need to put pressure on the defense. We make it easy to play defense against us.
The minute i see a tempo offense is when i will start watching.
How are you going to see said offense if you're not watching?
We also make it easy to play offense against us.
For me, part of me believes the offense they have been running could score many more points if they just ran it with tempo and scripted plays where the offense lines up, makes the read and snaps the ball. Eliminate the delays of game penalties, time outs and confused looks by everyone on the field.

We do put pressure on the defense. It just sucks that it's our defense.
Sucks that the WRs are underperforming and if Giles Jackson stayed he could have been a star. Now he goes to WA, who we have to play and makes us miss him!
Personally, I never thought he was special as a receiver. He's a special return man. You hold your breath every time he receives a kick, because you know something special could happen. But as a receiver, not so much.
And Blake Corum is a better returner anyways. So basically that’s why he transferred. He was passed up at multiple positions.
Same thing i said to UW people i know who immediately asked me about him. To my fan eye , amazing kick returner, a fine WR but don’t look for a game breaker there. Devin Hester ish
Special? I'm just looking for offensive competence. People here act like we're fine because he wasn't Percy Harvin. Now they're talking up Sainristil. It's possible he took a huge leap but he was the one who emerged first before getting passed by Jackson. And Jackson was rated higher out of high school.
I think Jackson was a dynamite returner but at no point did I see him emerging as anything more than the okay slot receiver he looked like these past 2 years. He got 15 balls all of last year, 7 of those against MSU, and was clearly losing ground to other guys as the year progressed. I wish him luck at UW and maybe he'll break out as a receiver but I wouldn't be remotely shocked if he wound up scuttling there as a receiver and being a dynamic returner. But the idea that he was poised for a star-turning season seems hyperbolic.
All spring news is good news!
Agreed! Only problem is, none of it is to be believed
Putey, did you have a hand in this propaganda?
Alas, my spies are typically dormant this time of year.
Sounds like the secondary is continuing to improve and look like a strength for the team, which is great to hear.
The linebackers being competitive is good to hear, especially if the big takeaway is they're playing fast. I assume that the more experienced guys are struggling a bit with the changes moreso than the younger guys because they have more terminology/technique to unlearn, which could contribute to them being perceived as "slower" because of this mental aspect. But who knows.
I know some people freak out about "McCarthy throws everything like a dart" but he's not Milton, who always struggled with accuracy and seemingly threw as hard as he could because that was how he compensated (get it there fast enough the defender can't react). McCarthy has showed consistency throwing the ball and is likely just getting used to the speed of college corners.
WRs underwhelming isn't great but there's enough talent to assume that'll right itself. And the RBs sound like studs, which will help across the offense.
I'm not surprised the two lines struggled to distinguish themselves; you've got guys figuring out the pecking order and the defensive line, in particular, having a brand new regime. It is somewhat concerning that we still don't hear much noise about the defensive tackles stepping out; it's getting a bit late early for them.
Secondary a strength might be a tad bit of a stretch. If Hutchinson doesn’t come back healthy...it might be a long year for the defense. Dax may be great but he can’t cover the whole field. I for one still don’t have much confidence in Hawkins or the 2 corners. The linebackers playing fast(backups) may be a good thing, but McGrone played fast last season and was often out of position. I’m hoping things improve a lot on that side of the ball with the new coaching, but often it just looked like we lacked difference makers on that side of the ball last season. For our sake let’s hope they look much better after this offseason.

I think they'll look much more coherent after the offseason, especially as the coaches are further able to install their defensive system and guys are able to digest it.
I am in the minority in believing that the corners got better last year as the season progressed; that doesn't mean they were great but they were noticeably better than the ones we saw against MSU, which seems to be when a lot of people sort of set their expectations. I've read people claim the improvement came at the expense of the safeties but while that probably helped somewhat they still did better in 1-on-1 coverage and at times it felt like the safeties, lacking anything approaching an actual position coach, were the ones that started to make mistakes.
Anyway, I think the general sentiment that this team is doomed feels a bit premature, and this review (which I admit is from Brandon Brown and so must be taken with a massive grain of salt) tracks with some of the chatter I've read that the team is still learning with the new coaches but is making strides.
This guy is the worst. He wrote an article about transfers being an issue for Harbaugh, and then listed two Big Ten schools with more and other schools in the country with more.
I’m not sure if I should be excited that Corum looks more explosive than all of the other RB’s or concerned that Edwards isn’t on the same level. I understand that he should still be in high school. I guess I was hoping to hear that Edwards looks different and once he learns to block and pick up blitzes he will be good to go. RB is usually a position that freshman can have success.
Wasn't Corum higher rated in HS? I mean, he's no scrub and should by all rights be faster and better than Edwards right now.
April 11th, 2021 at 10:37 PM ^
Corum wasn't as highly rated as Edwards, BUT he was getting a lot of attention from OSU at the end of the recruiting cycle at RB - pre and post verbal to M.
I know OSU actively keeps tabs on M targets but I do not think they would take a RB they didn't want just to F with Michigan. The key - it seems - is to target RBs that OSU actually wants (Weber, Corum, Edwards) versus ones they are reducing contact with in hopes of a decommit (K. Walker).

I'm not too concerned to hear Edwards isn't on the same level at this point. If we aren't seeing him get touches early in the season I'll be worried, but for now, hearing Corum is the most explosive back is great news. Michigan just needs another back to step up to pair with Haskins who is reliable. Once Edwards finds his gear, Michigan will legitimately have three stable backs, and it's likely that both Corum and Edwards will turn into the stars — especially as they'll be able to move Corum around and use him elsewhere in the offense.
So why again couldn't the "game" been video-recorded and shared for us fans???
They don't want to give away any secrets.
But seriously, when was there ever a Michigan spring game that showed anything worth protecting?
We have the most non-existent secret weapons of any team in the country.
The football program has no respect for its fans. They know that people will show up in the fall regardless.
The program is in full submarine mode. This could be good, since more fans will be surprised in one way or the other.
This is going to be a rough year gents. The offense struggling was last thing we needed to hear. Looking like 2014 but with less (developed) talent and an inexperienced QB.
April 11th, 2021 at 10:27 PM ^
Not saying it's NOT going to be a rough year, but there was some coaching turnover, New/young players, and it's spring. The line is going to take some time to gel and QBs time to build chemistry with wideouts. Maybe they'll still suck, but I think it's a bit early to worry about the offense.
Brandon Brown does not equal fun.
Brandon Browns writing is exactly what Michigan football is,average with little to no substance. I hope things are better than expected for those of you that watch the games this year, but I'm not holding my breath.
April 11th, 2021 at 10:24 PM ^
I'm not expecting a great season. 7-5 or 6-6. I'll support the team by watching games and if we are allowed to attend games, I'll try to attend one.
The last time I saw this many people predicting 7-5/6-6 the team was 5-7. The time before that they were 3-9.

Dude needs an editor.

Even Grammarly would be a better editor than no editor lol

As my daughter would say, I wouldn’t go right to “fun”
April 11th, 2021 at 11:16 PM ^
Wrong F word.
So the offense can move the ball against the defense! Sounds like a typical Michigan scrimmage.
Fella needs a copy editor.
Found this difficult to read based on Brandon Brown. First off, he starts writing as though he were there, but this is all second hand. We know media wasn't allowed and at the end he says he'll report more when he knows it - an admission that he wasn't there.
Second, Brown has written with a butt-hurt chip on his shoulder ever since he went all in on "Harbaugh is gone to the NFL" prior to the extension. I hate when journalists take a hard line and allow it to impact their work when they were clearly wrong.

I was hoping we could refrain from revealing ourselves to be this year's CFB laughingstock until the Rutgers game, but it looks like we're already off to a fast start with our Secret Spring Game.
Just logging on to remind people that Brandon Brown is not a journalist and should never be posted here. The guy is a HACK on every front. The fact that he's being published by SI shows how far they have fallen...
Has MGoBlog opted out of covering football? Crazy that we need to link to other sites to learn about our football team.
