FSU: Injuries Count
Some people are amazed when the Committee does exactly what it said it would do. The Committee’s own procedures say it must consider injuries. (The basketball committee does that too.) In contrast, there is nothing that says an undefeated P5 champ must be in the top four. I grieve for Florida State, but after its starting QB went down it simply has not been the same team.
Some in the media were arguing that Washington should leapfrog Michigan, because its win over Oregon “looked better” than Michigan’s slog over Iowa. But the Committee had Michigan consistently above Washington starting in Week 9, when Michigan still had not played Penn State, Ohio State, or Iowa. There was no way the same people who ranked them in that order were going to change their minds after Michigan handled Iowa 26–0.

They already got the TV money,
They will negotiate new TV deals in the future and today's ratings matter for that. They didn't like the ratings they got for Georgia-TCU.

You have my +1. Everything is a conspiracy, and lately, on this board, a disagreement isn't a rebuttal, its a down vote. Can't agree to disagree or state your piece without neg bombs.

Bama SOS is way better than fsu, not sure I get that argument. Like 50 spots better. SoR is within 1 of each other.
December 3rd, 2023 at 1:15 PM ^
How did they look worse than Bama who barley beat Auburn two weeks ago at full strength. FSU continued winning with backups. The amount of mental gymnastics to make excuses for Bama is unfathomable to me.
The committee is a joke. Georgia jumped OSU for beating Missouri, but Michigan doesn’t jump Georgia for beating OSU. The only thing consistent about the committee is they will always bend over backwards to accommodate the SEC.
December 3rd, 2023 at 2:00 PM ^
Except last year, when two Big Ten teams got in, while Alabama stayed outside and pouted about how unfair it was.
December 3rd, 2023 at 2:55 PM ^
You mean when they had two losses? And OSU had one and got in ahead of them? If Georgia and Bama both had one loss they both would have been in. No way they were going to go as far as putting a two loss team in.
December 3rd, 2023 at 1:15 PM ^
FSU was 2-0 vs the SEC with its elite defense.
December 3rd, 2023 at 1:16 PM ^
If the injury mattered then why didn’t they drop them weeks ago when it happened?
December 3rd, 2023 at 2:28 PM ^
If the injury mattered then why didn’t they drop them weeks ago when it happened?
^^^ Exactly that. Drop them then maybe, but not after they win out anyway.
December 3rd, 2023 at 1:16 PM ^
Avenge the Seminoles!
December 3rd, 2023 at 1:16 PM ^
There is no committee. It's tv executives looking for revenue.
December 3rd, 2023 at 1:36 PM ^
Oh stop. Do you think that people would not watch a Michigan - Florida State game? Florida has one of the fastest, if not fastest, growing populations of any state and certainly more populous than Alabama.
Your take is just paranoid ideation.
The committee had a tough choice to make. One can reasonably argue the merits either way based upon football.
December 3rd, 2023 at 1:53 PM ^
Mich vs OhSt 19 million viewers.
Auburn vs Bama 9 million viewers.
FSU vs FLA had 5 million viewers.
That's 2 Florida schools meeting. That is a huge difference when selling ad space. People migrating to Florida doesn't make them Florida St fans. You're in denial.
December 3rd, 2023 at 2:29 PM ^
Mich vs OhSt 19 million viewers.
Auburn vs Bama 9 million viewers.
FSU vs FLA had 5 million viewers.
Oh there you go with all these pesky facts and realities messing with the distortion field and preferred realities of others.
December 3rd, 2023 at 1:53 PM ^
The question isn’t the FSU following.. it’s the $EC following. And, how many $EC fans will watc( a CFP without an $EC team.
December 3rd, 2023 at 2:26 PM ^
Yea I neve like the whole $$ arguments. It's a committee who all have disparate rooting interests, nobody benefits from the $$ on that committee as a whole.
I'd rather play a worse team than bama, if we are so sure they aren't deserving. We should be thanking the committee
December 3rd, 2023 at 1:17 PM ^
Michigan should immediately cancel the game with Texas next year. Never play any strong out of conference teams.
December 3rd, 2023 at 1:20 PM ^
That will never happen. Michigan not scheduling any tough nonconference games in the last 2 years left them no margin for error. They had to go undefeated or they wouldn't have gotten in either year.
That conveniently gets left out.
December 3rd, 2023 at 1:25 PM ^
They are not getting left out next year if they beat 3 of the tough four teams next year. Even if they cancel Texas. Playoff expands next year.
December 3rd, 2023 at 1:33 PM ^
Michigan can go 10-2 and nearly be guaranteed a playoff spot going forward.
December 3rd, 2023 at 1:41 PM ^
Going forward. The last 2 years one loss and they're out.
December 3rd, 2023 at 1:48 PM ^
The last two years are not relevant for what it'll take to make the playoffs starting next year.
December 3rd, 2023 at 2:32 PM ^
They had to go undefeated or they wouldn't have gotten in either year.
Two weeks ago Georgia played Georgia Tech and Alabama played Chattanooga. Where's the strength of schedule with Alabama playing an intra-mural team the week for rivalry week (which they should have lost to unranked Auburn).
December 3rd, 2023 at 2:01 PM ^
Huh? Not only was Texas included, in part for beating Alabama, but Alabama was included, despite losing to Texas!
Seems like scheduling that game helped both teams. What are you talking about?
December 3rd, 2023 at 2:28 PM ^
Doesn't bama's inclusion show you can drop a game against a top team and still get in? And that win is what helped get TX in. Seems like all upside.
December 3rd, 2023 at 3:25 PM ^
No. It shows you can drop a game and still get in because you're in the SEC.
December 3rd, 2023 at 1:17 PM ^
So if Michigan was in the same situation as FSU and lost JJ to injury you would understand why Michigan would be left out of the playoff?
December 3rd, 2023 at 1:20 PM ^
That's a good point. What if JJ goes down against Iowa. They could have kept us out.
December 3rd, 2023 at 1:21 PM ^
We have mount Orjicat though
December 3rd, 2023 at 1:18 PM ^
Zak Zinter is injured
Will Johnson is injured
FSU got screwed
December 3rd, 2023 at 1:19 PM ^
There's 7 deserving teams and only 4 spots. 7 teams that would have gotten in last season. The committee was going to be criticized no matter what they did.
I thought Florida State earned a spot. It's a shame they didn't get it. I was somewhat persuaded by the arguments that removing J.J. McCarthy from Michigan or Michael Penix from Washington is similar to what Florida State has right now.
December 3rd, 2023 at 1:19 PM ^
Beat Bama
December 3rd, 2023 at 1:25 PM ^
Plenty of time to break down film and make a plan. With orji on the scout team, they can prep for Bama
December 3rd, 2023 at 1:20 PM ^
The Committee knew of the FSU QB injury weeks ago, but didn’t lower their ranking until Alabama beat Georgia, potentially leaving the SEC out of the playoffs. So they then had to bump both Texas and Bama above FSU. The SEC bias in the administration of all things involving college football is so obvious.
December 3rd, 2023 at 1:20 PM ^
fsu should decline the bowl invite and boycott. They get $4 million for going to a bcs bowl and that money is distributed between the conference teams. FSU is required to pay for their ticket allotment, so I can’t see them clearing more than $500k net revenue max. However, the ncaa and cfp would take a BIG hit if fsu doesn’t play.
fsu could play against Florida or some other team in an exhibition to get a few bucks and throw a middle finger to the committee
December 3rd, 2023 at 2:31 PM ^
So deprive those student athletes a chance to leave their mark and wear their colors one more time to make a fruitless point?
December 3rd, 2023 at 1:21 PM ^
It also counts when you lose.
FSU is like - WTF is that supposed to mean?
December 3rd, 2023 at 1:22 PM ^
Why did they rank FSU #4 then the week earlier knowing their QB was hurt. It didn’t matter then, but it matters now? I smell some corruption.
December 3rd, 2023 at 1:24 PM ^
FSU would have had 3 weeks to get any qb ready for a playoff game. The injury excuse is a pile of crap.
December 3rd, 2023 at 1:57 PM ^
And, I assume FSU’s QB2 - who was a game time decision yesterday - would be out of concussion protocol in a week or two.
December 3rd, 2023 at 1:26 PM ^
No matter what was said, especially by the espn crew, it's 99.9% that no one on the committee wanted FSU in the playoff. Chances are, they were only voted #5 out of sympathy. FSU probably would have been voted behind georgia, osu, oregon and psu if it was a real vote.
December 3rd, 2023 at 1:26 PM ^
This needs to be said as well. There is no difference, NONE, from 2022 Ohio State and 2023 Ohio State. And 2022 Ohio State made the playoffs with no real debate.
There's 6 teams this season that would have gotten in last season. There just aren't enough spots.
December 3rd, 2023 at 1:42 PM ^
There is a huge difference. One is named CJ Stroud and the other is a Honda.
December 3rd, 2023 at 1:46 PM ^
There just aren't enough spots.
According to this article, you have the genius P12/ACC/B1G "Alliance" to thank for that.
How ironic that one of its members was then screwed out of a spot because of the Alliance's obstruction.
December 3rd, 2023 at 1:28 PM ^
FSU and its fans should be so pissed off right now.
December 3rd, 2023 at 1:58 PM ^
I believe they are, and the ACC Commissioner’s statement reflects it.
December 3rd, 2023 at 1:29 PM ^
The entire framework is a crock of shit. No other sport are champions determined by trying to guess the future. It's results or a random draw. Fuck ESPN and the CFP. I'm genuinely hoping that UM wins it all so I can walk away from this with Michigan as a national champion. The entire assemblage of this sport has just decayed beyond belief. As a former player I can say with clear eyes that being a fan fucking sucks, especially in the current landscape of the sport. I'm at the point where I'd rather watch lower division schools because at the least it's football, not the ES(EC)PN circle jerk. Really hoping we pull this off so we can stick it to ESPN and the rest of this whack ass sport.
December 3rd, 2023 at 1:44 PM ^
You clearly don't watch college basketball. Ask the 2013-14 Wichita State basketball team, who were undefeated and drew an 8th seeded Kentucky team in the 2nd round and lost.
December 3rd, 2023 at 1:55 PM ^
You are correct. There are other things that occupy the real estate of my mind besides a mid-major team's* seeding from the NCAA men's basketball tournament that occurred a decade ago, but go off!
*A team that I do not follow, root for, or generally give a shit about.
