I needed to create a thread to mess around with reply behavior for the devs, so I figured might as well use it to get everyone to wish you a happy birthday, which comes exactly one year late, like it always does.

possible, but more likely it was just what marlins do. i used to do a fair amount of that as a younger guy and marlins can do some amazing things. oh, and that deck hand getting out of the way was pretty critical, too. a (guessing) 250-300lb blue marlin launched at you, bill first, would run through a person like poop through a goose.
Yikes! My big question is: the deck hand who went overboard - did he survive?
Most big fish boat captains do more than a bit a "backing down" towards the fish to help the guy in the chair. That soggy deck hand might have been in big trouble.
(Yeah, sorry, my brain just goes there (what ifs) sometimes)).
it looks to me like he was backing down, went to neutral almost exactly at the moment the fish left the water, then put it in gear (forward) as the other deck hand goes over the transom. on a boat that big the props will still be a few feet toward the bow of the boat from the transom so its a pretty good chance that the wet deck hand did not get osterized. hopefully.
we had a good sized shark come back to life once in the back of our boat, snapping and twisting/lunging all over. cleared the deck in a microsecond. i grabbed the baseball bat and with all the adrenaline-fueled strength i could muster, put that bad boy back to sleep for good.

Work is stupid and I don't want to be here today. I need to find a way to get paid like $500k a year to drink beer, smoke weed, and watch football, since I think those are my top 3 skills. They are just not very marketable skills.
Heading up to Kalamazoo after work today so that's cool. Haven't seen my kids in a while so gonna do that. Daughter turned 21 so we're going to the bar. Did I mention I was skilled at beer drinking?

It's my kids birthday today - he's 11. We got him a pair of gel-ball guns (think paint ball, only non-staining) for around the yard. I will be leaving work early today, because he needs his ass kicked via gel-gun.
