Yes, its a thing. If you haven't heard, calling a POC a thug is racist.  I can't say I entirely agree, but it is a thing.  Also, if you haven't seen, John Beilein called several Cav players' thugs and he was immediately deemed a racist.  And because of that, to certain people here, JB is perona non grata.

But the overall point still stands that you continue to prove.  As a Sparty, you will not change the minds of posters on this topic.  Just like I will not change the minds of Sparty's on RCMB that Juwan Howard is a thug.  And it doesn't even matter if you are wrong or right.

Pro Tip:  if you are ever in a sexual situation and this is your response, “I can understand why she (the victim) felt she wasn’t free to leave’.  Just know people may consider you a rapist.

So to fix your delicate sensibilities how about this, ”Adrien Payne is an unindicted rapist…RIP”. Are you good with this?

Have you seen the video in which he all but admits it?   I don't care what happened legally,  what he and Appling did was wrong.   Izzo did not do either of them favors by not giving significant consequences for unacceptable behavior.

Such sad news.

on the less important side, I always liked his game and thought he was about to put it all together and become 'great'.   I also thought he had a nice game for the NBA and would be even better there.

RIP

Humans are incredibly complex. No need to limit ourselves to platitudes with people just cause they die. He may have contributed to rape, and he also made a big difference in the life of a child suffering from cancer. People are capable of great evil and great good and some people do both in one lifetime. That's what makes life horrible and wonderful and confusing and amazing.

I was afraid this would happen when I created the post.  It looks like it went (not-surprisingly) off the rails.  I have my opinions on Payne as a person, but this isn't the time or place to share them.  We should feel sympathy for his family, especially his young child, during a time like this.

He was a good player on some pretty good MSU teams. He really improved a lot over his career in EL. Also, he seemed to genuinely care for that little girl.

Both Appling and Payne had some difficult post MSU lives; and in at least Appling’s case he should have been taken off the streets a long time ago. Hate to see anyone’s life taken at 31.

Well, apparently I set a chunk of you off on here.  Life isn't so black/white.

But, whatever, I'll let a subsection of you get back to loving rape jokes (laughing at Brian for calling MSU the "fightin' Larry Nassars") so long as it demeans a rival institution.  You do you, I guess.  Some folks have really shown an ugly side of fandom.

It can simultaneously be the case that this is terribly tragic and the guy (allegedly) made some regrettable life decisions. Pictures of him and Lacey Holsworth remind me of what is right about sports + human nature.

Sad that he died so young.

The Lacy story was touching. He truly did a good thing there.

Every student at MSU heard about the rape story long before it was ever reported to the police.

https://www.krausefuneralhome.com/blog/the-story-of-adreian-payne-an-in…

Adreian’s mother Gloria became a single mom and worked exceptionally hard at making a life for herself and her children.  One day, while making fried chicken—her son’s favorite meal—the smoke became overwhelming for her. Adreian saw his mother step out of the kitchen and labor up the stairs to her bedroom.  He followed behind to make sure she was alright.  Gloria had a long history of asthma and was suffering a terrible attack.  She opened the window, hung her head out, and tried to slow her breathing while pleading for her inhaler.  Adreian fished through drawer after drawer, but said “I can’t find it mama!  I can’t find it!”  Gloria stepped away from the window and collapsed on the bed.  Not knowing what else to do, Adreian cradled her in his arms as his mother took her last breath.   He was just 13 years old.
