Fickell with Terrible Clock Management

Submitted by CincyBlue on January 1st, 2021 at 3:52 PM

Fickell loses the Peach Bowl after throwing on 3rd and 2, when UGA had no timeouts with 1:32 to play.

UGA kicks a field goal with 3 seconds left after UV had to punt.

Bama was un interested in the first half?  Stop sounding like a fucking idiot..

Michigan ran it for 7 yards a carry in the first half then the playcalling became full gattis like and he just stopped running the ball to start the second half

Since Michigan is not a top tier program, they are more motivated and excited about Citrus Bowls than Alabama is, which considers it a disappointment. Also how quickly everyone forgets that Michigan was playing Alabama's backup QB in Mac Jones who had only 3 career starts at the time.

It’s a bowl game that players sit out of. Not being a top tier team doesn’t mean Michigan is interested in it. Nobody gives a rats ass about bowl games anymore.

also, how quickly people forget Mac Jones was still throwing to first round receivers and Michigan held Bama to their season low in points.

Bama is not the game that I'd focus on if I'm evaluating Jim Harbaugh.  Do we expect ND to stay within 19 of them today?

There are other things that have happened in the last six seasons that I am not happy about, but that Bama game elicits a shoulder shrug from me.

Exactly, the last 6 years have brought us this:

  • 0-5 vs OSU, covid saved us from 0-6
  • 3-3 vs MSU
  • 0 B1G titles, not even playing in the B1G title game let alone CFP
  • best road win is against #20 Northwestern
  • 1-4 in bowl games
  • 0-15 when Michigan is an underdog
  • 2-12 vs. top 10 teams
  • worst halftime deficit in Michigan stadium history & 2nd worst loss ever at home
  • home loss to an 0-5 team
  • 4 straight home losses
  • talented players transferring / leaving the program early
  • questionable roster management and seemingly disorganized recruiting
  • could not keep the players from missing the last 3 games
  • 4th highest paid coach in the country

And the amazing thing is that many of you on here want a 7th year.  Thank you sir may I have another!

Not as unbearable as watching Michigan play on the level of Rutgers in Year 6 of the Harbaugh Era and then Harbaugh Homers claiming that Fickell with Cincinatti recruits, in Year 4 losing to Georgia in the Peach Bowl by a 54 yard game-winning FG is a "downgrade" when Harbaugh got blown out in his Year 4 and 5 bowls and failed to make one in Year 6.

Man, I typically forget about that game.

We’ll add to it, yet another Don Brown specialty where no opposing Red Zone possessions end in FG attempts.

How the hell didn’t Harbaugh show him the door after last season?

Fickell didn’t build Cincinnati from scratch, though. Cincinnati has been up and down but they’ve had a bunch of good seasons in the last 15-20 years under a variety of coaches (including Bryan Kelly, Tommy Tuberville, Mark Dantonio and Butch Jones). Don’t forget the 12-1 season they had under Brian Kelly, losing only to Florida in Tim Tebow’s last game.

You still have to give him credit for the job he’s done the last few years.

Definitely agree, and that's kind of my point. The fact he had his team in position to beat a team as talented as Georgia I think says something about his ability to coach.

Cincinnati has definitely been a very competitive program over the past decade plus. But their roster talent is not in the same league with a team like Georgia.

Blew it for his team... I'm screaming at my TV with them not running the ball in that situation. Even if you don't get it, it's worth the time off the clock.

Huge fail.

Also snapped the ball with more than 10 seconds a couple of times.

Granted, that's one where if they convert, it's a "Great call!"  This is a results-oriented business.  But yeah, I'd run the ball there.

What's worse is they snapped the ball early a few times, when they could have used up more clock.  That's bad.

Honestly, I don't mind him going for the win there as much as I had an issue with his teams snapping the ball with 10+ seconds on the game clock in a couple of those instances.  Playing for the win I'm fine with, but you have to be smart and aware of the game situation.

That wasn’t even the worst part. Having two guys run out of bounds and snapping the ball with 13+ seconds left twice ultimately were worse than the 3rd and 2 incompletion. Georgia scored in a 1 minute 15 seconds but should’ve at most got the ball back with 20 seconds.

The clock stopped both times until they reset the ball in the field of play. They gave Georgia about 12 extra seconds just on those two plays alone. Then you toss in the 40 they gave them by passing on 3rd and 2 and snapping the ball with 13 seconds left twice and you are talking about ~1:18 they gave back to UGA (all in the final 2.5 minutes).

I would take Fickle. Those kids played there asses off for him. I haven’t seen our team play like that since Harbaugh’s first bowl game.

True the clock management sucked. Something we're not used to seeing is a team play for the win. Michigan would've done 3 FB dives with 4 minutes left and never got the first down to get the clock down to 1:30, thus giving Georgia back the ball with 3 minutes left instead.

Georgia kicker made a great career long and first game-winning 54 yard field goal to seal the game.
