Feldman on the Rich Eisen show today: Other teams have in-person scouted, were reported to the NCAA, and the NCAA did nothing

Shocked this wasn't posted yet, but I've scoured the board and I believe this slipped through the cracks. Bruce Feldman said today on the Rich Eisen show that he is working on a story to be published later this week (probably tomorrow) that other teams have broken the in-person scouting rule, were reported to the NCAA, and the NCAA did nothing.

The hypocrisy knows no bounds.

It's a guarantee that B1G is going to do nothing. Gene Smith was a very shrewd and hard AD.

I think he has seeded the B1G so well that they would carry OSU's water come hell or high water.

Surprising that Michigan is treated like a step child when they bring in same if not more money as OSU does!

The interview walks a bit around stuff - he says there are reports from other teams of in-person scouting AND he's working on a story about something else nefarious that was brought to the NCAA's attention and they ignored it - but it is yet more evidence that this is personal.  Now, in a court of law a defense can't simply be "you didn't catch everyone who has committed this crime"  (e.g. you can't get out of a speeding ticket but arguing the cops haven't pulled over every speeding driver they've ever seen) but if you can show a bias in the enforcement, or an unequal won targeted at you, then you've got an argument.  Of course, the NCAA isn't a court of law but if Petitti insists on pushing UM's hand with a suspension tomorrow that's absolutely going to be a line of argument by UM's attorneys and a decently strong one.  You show evidence that the administration is acting significantly out of step with past situations, including ignoring some more egregious violations, and a judge is likely to side with UM pretty quickly.

But they weren’t reported to the NCAA by Ohio State. That’s the difference! OSU is the biggest bunch of pansies and just maybe this whole saga can end with the world knowing it.

At the end of all of this, I don't think much is going to happen to Michigan. With the house of cards falling, the NCAA doesn't want to get involved in investigating Ohio State or Georgia for worse things. This is why we were clamoring for Michigan to take the Tennessee approach all along and fight back as opposed to the stupidity of appeasement and self imposing a 4 and then 3 game suspension.

Right now though, the question is what is the Big Ten going to do?

There is more than enough time for this story to come out, let the NCAA marinate in it and potentially back off. We’ve likely got only a few hours before Pettiti makes his judgment call. And if he leans the way most people think he will, this is going to get really ugly, really fast.

Holy smokes, I made the mistake of signing into twitter to see what Thamel had to say and was showered by tweets from inflammatory Buckeye idiots. So angry now, but didn’t take the bate. But when tf are we releasing the proof of illegally filmed practice footage?

Still not in love with Feldman. He’s barely on the edge of sensationalism and hawt takes, but just barely on this side by the thinnest of margins. This helps some though…

I have been quietly screaming into my pillows the last two weeks+: the media on this whole thing seems to be centering around stealing signs…which is totally LEGAL! When it’s really about whether someone tangentially related to M football went to games in violation of some arcane cost cutting measure. But, hey, arcane-rule-gate not as catchy or eye-popping as signalgate.

The reporting this week goes a long way (all the way) to showing sign stealing is rampant, has basically no competitive advantage, and other conference schools colluding against another (why aren’t we talking about that more?). Perspective is important in all things. Why would you judge the fitness of a fish by its ability to climb a tree? You would judge it the same water where all the other fish swim.

The answer, of course, is that “stealing signs” sounds nefarious.  And if it were being done by, say, hacking into the other teams’ computers and downloading their game plans — yep, that’d be a pretty serious charge.  But watching the signals they make in front of 100,000 people and failing to pretend you didn’t see them? I just can’t get outraged over that.

PS: Fish are too damned lazy to climb trees. Dedicate yourself to the task at hand!!

FFS.  So it’s of minimal competitive advantage in the eyes of the NCAA, but it is very important to the B1G if tOSU rallies the mob.  So this is where we stand with this conference.

Thanks for posting.

Not to be pedantic here, but Feldman states that an unnamed coach complains to the NCAA about something "nefarious", not necessarily in-person scouting. I'll wait to see the report but hopefully the NCAA has seen this before and not acted.

Now I just need to see the confirmation of Day hiring a PI firm to dig into Michigan and for OSU to have illegally taped or accessed our practice film and I can cackle with glee at how truly pathetic 3rd base is.

Feldman is a click-monger.

And Pettiti's problem is that he is an ignorant little bitch who doesn't know how to lead by shutting whiners the fuck down and man-splaining what due process is and why it will be adhered to.

There. Story over. Now everyone can get back to the real business at hand. How Michigan is going to beat the shit out of Penn State.

Please, for the love of god will SOMEONE at the Big Ten office allow cooler heads to prevail today?

I’ve been feeling like Michigan and the Big Ten are in the midst of their own Cuban Missile Crisis. One massive standoff where if anyone tries one wrong move, the (sports) world as we know is done and over with. If the Big Ten goes through with this, there is truly no turning back, and the repercussions will be getting felt for a long time.

Someone please convince Pettiti to just back the fuck off so we can all take some time to calm down, breathe, and find out the facts?

Still pretty weak sauce...he is misleading in him comment that the B1G has a new rule that the HC  is responsible for everything that happens beneath him..isnt that a NCAA rule not a BIG rule?

Also suggesting that what Stallion did was more than what others have done. Really? His 'vast network' was more like the keystone cops...nothing compared to B1G coaches passing around UMs actual plays.

I gotta say- I'm thoroughly enjoying watching OSU, MSU, and other Big Ten fans move the goalposts as fast as they can

A week ago it was

  • Player safety!
  • The ethics of the game!
  • Every win is tainted! What will vegas say?!

And now its

  • Ok...well...so, everyone steals signs and no theres no evidence Jim knew but you cant steal signs like that. Here's why I still think this is a crime against humanity

Cant wait to see where we're at in another week

  • Ok, like yes Ohio State did a few worse things and yes they hired the PI to wage a PR campaign against Michigan but what Stallions did was still against the spirit of the rule and I will not stand for less than 4 hours of probation for Michigan! Thats been my only position this whole time!

If this is true, then the NCAA has set a precedent that will be incredibly difficult to turn back if this is taken to the courts. If that happens, other people get to interpret the laws the NCAA sometimes decides they want to follow.

I am beginning to believe that the NCAA pushing this investigation on Michigan is due to the party that hired this PI Firm to dig into Michigan.  IF it is OSU, Day and/or his family members that pushed the button to start this mess for Michigan, then it wouldn't shock me that the NCAA indulged in investigating Michigan to help OSU's chances in winning the B1G.  I know this is a reach, but knowing how anti-Michigan the NCAA is and pro OSU they are it wouldn't be a surprise.

Yea, I saw that last night and was like Whaaa?  I knew from the very beginning this thing was such a farce.  Talk about pots calling the kettles black.  I'm getting more and more pissed about how damaged the UM brand's gotten over this whole fiasco.

Good ol NCAA.   You can always count on them to do nothing.   The precedent they set in almost every major infraction case is inaction and weakness.    It should be what prevails again here.

its a shame this all didn't get traction at the same time. You add 2-3 schools to the equivalency mess and the attention dissipates and falls right back on NCAA incompetency and stupidity. But while everyone has an A-prime target of Michigan... we stay in the spotlight

The hypocrisy is ridiculous.  But no matter how much logic you throw at people, they put their hands over their ears and scream, “I can’t hear you, lalalalala!!!”

I remember the amount of media coverage that Stretch-gate got and it shocked me.  You would have thought Michigan was the dirtiest program in college football…all the while we saw what Pete Carrol was getting away with at USC.  But this?  There are no words.

This needs to be concluded.  Day is a pathetic POS, but that’s no surprise.  But when simpletons with a stick up their a** like Ryan Walters give Harbaugh attitude and act relentless in their outrage…it drives me crazy.  It shouldn’t bother me but it does.

We really should be dropping the dossier we have on Ohio’s transgressions now. This is the point when doing so has the maximum strategic advantage. Why are we holding back?
