I really think a lot of people are now irrationally optimistic about the program simply because Harbaugh didn't lose to OSU this year and now Michigan hasn't lost a game in a month or so. This board was so much more pessimistic at this time last year, despite having a much better season.

Good luck to him.  A little surprising given his performance this year, but there's potential there and I can see him wanting to take that next step.

Yeah, I'm also a surprised.  I imagine he'll be looking at a mid 4th to mid 6th round grade with a chance to go undrafted.  Personally, I think its a poor decision from both a football and money standpoint but it's his decision to make.  Wish nothing but the best for him.

Part of what Chris Balas described as a culture thing at UM (Huge Show interview). Certain guys aren't all in for Michigan, they're mainly interested in getting to the NFL. May not apply to McGrone; however, after exploding onto the scene last year, he was hardly to be found this past season for the short time he played. Best of luck.

Yeah, he'll really have to impress with interviews/combine/pro day/etc. because he doesn't necessarily have a ton of tape.  And unlike Mayfield, which you can see how he'd likely translate to the pros and teams are willing to sort of take a chance on, I'm not sure the same will be applied to McGrone.  But with what happened to the defensive staff this offseason I don't blame him for looking to the next step.

First off, I do wish him well.

Secondly, what a god awful decision.

He is not draftable based on his play this year and the end of 19.

It's truly bothersome because he could have come back and become a much better player - and I'm saying this for the betterment of the kid.

Be careful.  There's a woke mob around here that is ready to pounce on you and tell you how awful of a person you are for being realistic and not bowing down to kiss the feet of the players.  I would expect something along the lines of, "this is such a selfish position to have. How dare you say its not a smart move.  What about their dreams!  NCAA bad.  You're just mad they are leaving Michigan and you don't really support them, word vomit word vomit word vomit."

Its tough for some people to be objective and look at this strictly as a business decision.  And strictly as a business decision, its bad.

Well, I guess I would say that neither should be happy with their decision.  DPJ left early and became a 6th round draft pick and signed for a whopping $186k in guaranteed money and has really taken off to the tune of 293 yards on 11 catches (72 of which were on one catch).  Nico originally made the better decision to return and boost his draft stock but a once in 100 year pandemic threw a wrench into the plan.  Unfortunately, he then followed with making a dumb decision to sit out the rest of the year.

Unless I'm totally misreading the insinuation behind your question, what part of DPJ's decision do you think has worked out in his favor thus far?  As far as I can tell, he's getting fed NFL scraps in the form of both money and playing time.  Even if he absolutely takes off next season and becomes a top WR in the NFL he's still under a crappy contract for 3 more years.  If he doesn't take off it's a 50-50 shot he even gets a second contract and even if he does, with his current production level, it'll be another minimal contract.  Looking at it as a business decision, I see no where that DPJ came out ahead.

I asked who was happier with his decision. What I got from you is a bunch of if's and but's and a non sequitur about DPJ's NFL experience.

Looking at it today, objectively and as a business decision, I think it's clear that DPJ is quite happy with his decision.  For you to deny that DPJ did not come out ahead is absurd.  He's getting paid to play football and is one year closer to his second contract.  An often cited reason by players when they leave early, right or wrong, is that it gets them a closer to their second contract.

DPJ had three years of evidence regarding his development at Michigan and apparently felt a fourth would not make a big enough difference.  He decided to take his healthy body to the combine and draft.

Here's what we have a priori:  a healthy body, a lack of certainty in further development, and a non-zero injury risk in an extra year.  Additionally, here's what we know after the fact:  a pandemic college season with a completely crappy offense.

And you "see no where that DPJ came out ahead"?

What did Nico get?

DPJ is how old? And made how much money this year? And played football to get that money? I think he’s grinning ear to ear.

maybe it’s not much money by “NFL standards” but it’s a LOT of money by any other standard. First year out of college standard, 22 years old standard, kid from Detroit with a bachelors degree standard, etc.

remember when he wanted to go to medical school? If he doesn’t get that second contract I think he has a rock solid plan to make that happen, if something better doesn’t happen first.

OK, so suppose we did have a normal season, then what? How many yards was DPJ gonna rack up with this terrible offense? COVID shortened the season but it wasn't responsible for the program turning into a tire fire. Bell got 400 yards in 6 games as the leading receiver. So he probably wouldn't have broken 1,000. And DPJ almost surely wouldn't have gotten 1,000 playing next to Bell and the others.

I think he will be pretty good in the NFL. I think his biggest issue was being out of position but i think that has more to do with the quality of the D Tackles infront of him.

Good luck to him & I really hope that there is some sort of combine to help him by showing his athleticism.

I know 2020 was a complete mess overall but he seemed very lost this year & looked like he was thinking more than reacting; too slow on some plays while overshooting gaps & ball carriers on others.

A good combine could help teams overlook some of that bad tape
