Well, it is written in a way that the author assumes that Harbaugh is wrong and claims the author is not NCAA fanboy. Sometimes people feel the need to be a contrarion to get a click. It doesn't mean we need to ban every one of them. Just ignore or even comment the idiocy in the column and move on. Not worth the outrage.

He writes like a sparty or bucknut. Oh, such terrible violations! Total BS, several teams have done much worse and only received a slap on the wrist because the NCAA knew those ADs would tell the NCAA to go fuck off. So, a bully always seeks out an easy victim and has honed in on Michigan. Odds are they will probably suspend Harbaugh next year for 3 to 4 games and I would hope our AD will say hell no, the three this year will be part of the four. But who knows what the future holds. But some of the schools that have committed major violations the past 3 years will not be punished. And I'm sure other school probably recruited during the COVID dead period but somebody close to the program or heard from some recruit, turned Harbaugh in.

Ban the Michigan Daily?  OK, fair enough, that's your opinion ... but consider that the Michigan Daily ALSO has a track record of holding U-MAA accountable on various things:

  • back in the early 2010s, calling out the school for charging thousands of dollars for various public records requests --- a rather clear attempt by the administration at saying "hey, quit bugging us for information you are entitled to, watch as we put up a bunch of obstacles in your way."
  • disclosing the real reason Brendon Gibbons didn't play versus OSU in 2013
  • various Robert Anderson reporting in the 2020-2021 era.

I'm not calling any of that out to rip on Michigan.  U-M doesn't have a higher density of shady-acting administrators, employees or players than most other places.  But I call it out to say this: the Michigan Daily has done a lot better job than other outlets at reporting on that "shadier stuff."

I mean ------ seriously ------ has Angelique broken even ONE story like that in her 30 years covering Michigan?  She serves up nothing but sugary tasty ice cream for fans to consume.  The Michigan Daily has served up more of the unpleasant stuff (but still healthy to eat and know about).

The Michigan Daily isn't 100% perfect - but overall, to my eye, they have always seemed an honest broker on how they report about U-MAA (be it football/administration, etc).

Wow. Given the abuse the guy is taking here, I think it was pretty brave to write that piece. I respect that. I also, for what it's worth, respect a guy at a school with a football program as powerful and overwhelmingly popular as Michigan who has the balls to say, "hey, the head coach has actually been suspended for something, right? Maybe he's not absolutely blameless?"

I don't know. I'm a big fan of Harbaugh, and of the football team, but I don't think that means he's a saint, or that he's never made mistakes. In fact, it seems like he's agreed to pay for the mistakes he made several years ago, which is to his credit. That's what I want from a coach, and from a program. Good for him.

Why are we all so freaking outraged at the suggestion that, in fact, he made some mistakes? I don't get it. Nobody's suggested he should be banned from coaching forever, or that we're a school of cheaters. Indeed, I'm proud to be a graduate of a school that holds itself to a higher standard than the others.

Jesus. Whining about "but other schools do it too!" is so lame.

This article doesn’t say anything new at all. It’s not defamatory or anything though, mostly just states facts.
Think it’s a little overboard to be offended by a piece like this, or tbh to take super seriously what anyone’s lawyer says about their client

The irony of FranzWagner - one of the site's biggest whiner trolls - calling for a banning over a troll-ish article is hilarious!

My take of the article, because everyone has a take and they all smell the same - the author comes across as a guy who hates sports.  That is all.

This reminds me of my sophomore year in high school where I had to debate the con side of wearing seat belts. "What if you get in an accident and your belt release jams and your car starts on fire?"

I wonder if the guy who got the other side of the debate will publish an article in the next edition supporting Coach Harbaugh. Otherwise this is just being contrary to be contrary.

That reminds me of one high school history class, where we were divided up into groups of four and advocate for four positions; that of both White Americans and Native Americans, arguing for or against relocating the latter via the Trail of Tears.  My group was Whites in favor of relocation and when we convened we were all like "So..... yeah."  For some odd reason, no one voted our presentation as the most persuasive, though the teacher, to his credit, admitted we had no shot from the get go.

I have never understood the call for "banning" an entire media outlet.  I'm a big boy and can sort through information on my own.   Isn't that the beauty of a blog?  Posters can argue for or against an opinion as well as provide missing or additional information about the topic.

The kid has a point worth considering for a moment, but he's taking it all too seriously. The gallows humor displayed by the players supporting for their coach was just that. While perhaps Harbaugh has not been contrite enough to the satisfaction of the writer or some in the NCAA, since the suspension he hasn't mocked the NCAA (or the Michigan Athletic Department) over it, he accepted and responsibly named assistants deemed capable of stepping in.

When he made the unheard of decision to split interim coaching duties between four coaches and named his dad as an assistant coach, Harbaugh made the NCAA look even more incompetent.

How is that unheard of? Doesn't he know Jack Harbaugh was a long-term football coach? How did that make the NCAA look more incompetent?
Maybe we should blame the editor here, but these points are given no support and make no sense. The head coach (and OC) were removed from the game. Delegating the coaching role to his assistants actually draws more attention to fact that Michigan had taken steps tp address the issue, and to build up the long-term faith growth of the program and coaches.

No it's not worth banning them, people are allowed to write opinion pieces even if you don't agree with them.

Although I see the OP making multiple mentions mocking the writers physical appearance in the subsequent comments so I'm guessing this says a lot more about the maturity level of the OP than it does about the Daily author.

It's not even really critical of harbaugh, just saying the martyrdom stuff is a bit cheesy and overplayed, which it is.  Idk, only thing i would take issue is the assumption harbaugh broke the rules because there are allegations.  We have no clue whether the ncaa allegations are accurate or completely false.

Geez are we so fragile that if someone writes an OPINION piece that disagrees with your own OPINION the whole paper should be "banned".  Get over yourselves people.  The Daily is an exceptional independent student run college newspaper that gets it right 98% of the time.

The thesis of the piece is kind of dumb, but he acknowledges the NCAA sucks in general, and he comes off as a whiney holier-than-thou pinhead.  Big deal. You linking it here gives it more oxygen than it ever deserved in the first place.

Move on.

It was an opinion piece with some facts to support the author's opinion, so lay off the student who wrote it. It was clickbait, but that is precisely what opinion pieces are about.

The players are protesting their school for punishing their head coach.  I will bet it's because they know much more about what happened than the reporter. They also might be protesting that other coaches are doing far worse and standing on the sidelines. Last but not least, they might just be showing their support for someone they believe in.  None of those things make someone a martyr.

Here are my couple of thoughts. Seth Fisher -- who I assume is not under threat of being banned -- is a Daily alum who had a respectful discussion about the column on Twitter with the author. Also, if you read the column carefully it doesn't condemn Harbaugh or lionize the NCAA.  It essentially makes the point that there's an inconsistency being acknowledging violations and protesting consequences. Also, I assume the "banning" concept comes from the reaction here to the RichRod articles practice hours piece in the Freep back 2009, and to me the situations aren't even remotely analogous.

To be clear, I think Michigan's approach of challenging the NCAA and focusing on the cheeseburger has been successful from a PR standpoint and I support that. But I also think that one of the things that makes Michigan great is that the student body and fanbase don't speak with one voice, but embrace a diversity of views.

“Like it or not, Harbaugh broke those rules”?  This writer will make a classic journalist, willing to jump to a conclusion that fits the narrative he is selling.  But stay away from law school, where mere allegations are not a sufficient basis for reaching a conclusion.
