Another one down unfortunately.

Here's an idea: Maybe Kirby actually knows how to use WRs and doesn't meddle in his OCs play calling by inserting something from 1985 once every 8 downs, thus killing drives.

How can anyone in their right mind think WRs should come here and play for this program right now?  After how they (didn't) use DPJ, Nico and Black?  Bagmen are just a lazy excuse.

The defensive staff is totally new, with the exception of Nua. I'll honest, my thought has always been, let's put these kids in a position to win some games this year, build some relationships and take advantage this off season.

Kind of the position this fan base takes every year.  Next year "X" will be taken advantage of, next off season this and that.  Unleashing Nua isn't unleashing the expected dividends either.  Year seven and deck chairs are being swapped.....

"winning fixes a lot"

Agreed, but its a vicious cycle.

Need recruits to win.

Winning fixes a lot, and brings in recruits.

We haven't won, so perhaps recruiting has been less than we'd hoped.

Aren't getting the recruits we want, so perhaps this will impact winning...and recruits see that...and thus the cycle continues.

I don't even know if the "winning brings in recruits" meme is totally true either. Harbaugh was winning before 2020 and what did that get them? They have been recruiting well but not at the Alabama, Georgia, LSU, Clemson, OSU or a few other schools levels.

I think the caveat is not just win and they'll come; but rather beat OSU, win and they might come.

To be fair, these aren't mutually exclusive concepts. One can be disappointed that new coaches (hired at least partially with the intent to improve recruiting) aren't able to close on top board candidates and at the same time be disappointed that even when they do close it's only for lowly rated / less talented players.

That being said, let's look at reality. Michigan is a program on the down-swing right now. It's head coach was just given a rather unprecedented pay cut & buyout reduction due to zero expectations being met. Last season could be seen as a worse dumpster fire than Rich Rod's first season. And over 50% of the coaching staff is brand new and likely doesn't have strong established relationships with the recruits.

So put all that together, and quite frankly anyone who expected recruiting to take off like a rocket was just delusional...recruiting stars hasn't even been our biggest problem thus far anyways, so there's not much point to wring hands over it.

If he was our top WR target then that’s a rough one. I kept hearing he was being recruiting as a RB though. Either way, another guy that Michigan seemingly led for vanishes just like that.

Quick side note…Anyone else surprised to hear that the 5* DB who just decommitted from OSU only now just received a scholarship offer from Michigan?

Why would every 5* prospect not receive a scholarship from Michigan?  Was the prior coaches and scouting guys that uninterested in fighting for elite talent? I seriously doubt this new offer changes the outlook, but seems like a wasted opportunity.

This is baffling as if the coaching staff (led by Harbaugh) is ADMITTING that they have no shot at the top talent so they will not waste the time to even try.  Fucking Sad....wait for the Harbaugh apologists to explain this strategy away, I'll hang up and listen.

If he (or his coaches/ people) told the M staff that he's 100% OSU bound, why waste your limited recruiting time and energy on him? It's best to move on. If something happened to sour his relationship to OSU, you just open it back up and prioritize him over someone else.

I had this same thought earlier.  I assume there are a number of teams in this category but I only follow Michigan.  It does feel like we get more than a fair share of these.  Either the "experts" don't really have their finger on the pulse, or something really goes south between the "crystal ball" and the actual commitment.  Zero clue which one it is.

The "whims" of these 17 year olds are not nearly as nonsensical as the whims of irrational fans. Add to this that the Michigan homers with crystal ball projections have become much more "active" over the past year, seemingly, in an effort to assist in the recruiting effort. One has to wonder if this is, in fact, being counter-productive. Bash these kids all ones wishes, the thing that will turn them against you the quickest is disingenuousness.

I’m not bashing the kids at all. But they’re 17 year old kids. They change their mind a lot. They’re naturally unpredictable. It’s the nature of the American teen. And you’re asking people to make a living on predicting what someone who can change their mind at the drop of a hat will do.

Bell was leaning Michigan for months. Got a Georgia offer in the middle of June. Took his first visit to Georgia on July 29th. And committed on August 2nd. Things can move fast for these kids and we’re getting upset at guys who made predictions months before the kid had an offer from Georgia, let alone visited the school and committed a couple days later. Patton flat out told the staff he was coming to Michigan. Then he sat down with his family and realized he wanted to be close to them at the last minute. This isn’t experts just making predictions for no reason, there’s actual information behind it. But again, that information can change in an instant when dealing with such a fickle age group.

The reason for more crystal ball activity in general is actually from 247 itself. They recently started requiring their experts to make a certain amount of predictions within a certain time frame. Which is also why they added the confidence meter to the mix. It’s not the experts trying to boost recruiting, it’s 247 trying to generate artificial “content” and get clicks on their site.

t’s 247 trying to generate artificial “content” and get clicks on their site.

Back before all this crystal ball nonsense, Sam Webb would have been following Bell's recruitment just as closely, but unless Bell had specifically told him he was committing to Michigan and Sam could verify it with his Michigan program sources—I.E., his "gut feeling"—the most he would have said is that Michigan was in good shape, was currently the leader, or words to that effect.

The crystal ball horseshit takes on the appearance of an outright prediction about something that is essentially educated guesswork.
