Devin Bush update: Steelers decline 5th year option
Their reasoning, according to the article, is after his ACL tear he hasn't been the same player he was during his rookie season. Unfortunate if true. He had so much potential.
He will become a free agent after the 2022 season. If he doesn't ball out this year, he sounds like a perfect candidate for another 1 year "prove it" contract for the Lions next season. They've handed out a few of those and some have paid off. They'll be looking to upgrade at that position next offseason if none of these late round rookies pan out.
Nope. Bucs or Dolphins. He's a Florida kid.
Don't forget the Jaguars! I lived in JAX for eight years and it's kind of easy to overlook them.
Jacksonville would have to be smart to get him. They are far from that.
But they DID get rid of Urban Meyer….
Still had to hire him first.
Jaguars are lame…Trent baalke not picking Aidan over some ancient Beef with Jim is just a great snapshot of how lame they are down there.
Wait, is there any substance to this claim? Baalke's a shit-bag, but he can't be that spiteful, can he?
Baalke might be the main reason Harbaugh was fired by the Niners. Jim didn’t have a great relationship with the Yorks, but he and Baalke absolutely HATED each other. It was an absolute power move, and Jim lost…Ask most Niners fans, and we all want Jim to have success…let’s just say that sentiment is not share with Baalke. He’s a very petty and incompetent man.
Right, we've established that he's a shit-bag. That's different than passing up the best player in the draft out of spite for Harbaugh.
This meeting is for men only
Wait, is there any substance to this claim? Baalke's a shit-bag, but he can't be that spiteful, can he?
I know that the buddha answered your question in detail above, but nonetheless I will add my response as well. Yeah I definitely believe there is substance to the claim. I just did my research and it turns out that the Jaguares are lame [dot dot dot], and that Trent baalke didn't pick Aidan over some ancient Beef with Jim, which is just a great snapshot of how lame the lame Jaguares are down there in lameville. So I say case closed on this one. Wawawewa, great success!
+1 (Informative)
The fact that they hired the universally despised Trent Baalke in the first place tells you all you need to know about that franchise.
He’ll go wherever he gets the best opportunity. I doubt regional plays any role beyond a tie breaker
I wouldn’t be surprised if he played well this year and the Steelers resign him long term.
Hence the "if he doesn't ball out this year" caveat in my 2nd paragraph.
Are you a former super star with a devastating leg injury? Come see the Detroit Lions and start your return to glory.
"after his ACL tear he hasn't been the same player."
Yeah, just makes me feel all warm and fuzzy about Jameson Williams.
Settle down. Most players take a couple of years to fully recover from an injury like an ACL tear. Physically they are fine the next season, but it sometimes takes a full season and another off-season before the player trusts it fully and returns to 'normal'.
Both of these comments are true. Sometimes it can take 2 years to fully recover, sometimes they never play the same way even if "fully recovered".
This was my concern for Williams, but he's good enough it was worth the chance, given where the franchise is.
Do you know something the Steelers don't? I hope for Bush's sake that he will return to the player he was a few years ago, but I would guess that the Steelers thought long and hard about their decision before making it.
If the Cowboys are wrong and gave the Browns Cooper, reliant somewhat upon Gallup coming back from a December acl, our 2022 looks grim. Yet still May win the NFC East
I thought that too but I since heard/read some rumblings on the internet that he already ran a 4.4 40 15 weeks post ACL surgery.
Could be smoke and mirrors but if you are a Lions fan you are used to the depravity of following this franchise. Here's hoping!(not for depravity)
Straight-line speed isn’t necessarily the big concern with ACL injury recoveries.
In a worst-case scenario (no big second contract) he still has this going for him:

Sucks that he got hurt, but it could be way worse.
As a Steelers fan I agree with this move. He was not very good last season. Playing for a contract may force him to perform better.
Unless he has changed completely from the dedicated, hard worker he always has been, it is much more likely that his current performance problem is a result of the Achilles injury than a lack of effort. So added money as an incentive is not likely to make him perform better.
The talk behind the scenes that I've heard is he works hard and looks good at practice. On game day, for some reason, he just appears a step slow. Him and his dad claim the knee injury isn't hindering his play but it sure looks like he's thinking too much and not playing on instinct. As a Steelers fan and a huge Devin Bush fan, I really hope he gets back on track this year.
That seems possible.
There is of course a risk in this. Any player not given his fifth year is going to feel disrespected by his team. If he comes back strong, the incentive to look around for a new team will likely be stronger than it would have been had there been no bumps in the relationship. Everyone knows it’s a business, but sometimes players need to “feel” it before they treat it as such.
I hate how many great Wolverines were felled early by injuries in the NFL.
Truly amazing how some bounce back from an ACL like it’s nothing and some are never the same.
It's true. Some who are successful seem to be able to play like it never happened and that seems to be the formula if you can mentally take that challenge. I know I wouldn't be able to lol.
Brad Holmes heard "ACL" and got a boner... Lol
Kidding... LOVE the direction the Lions are going!!
Lions will get him for a year. He'll be a bust. Then he'll go to the Patriots and become a stud again.
