DC Jesse Minter interviewed for Eagles DC Position

Submitted by EastCoast Esq. on February 21st, 2023 at 9:59 AM

Per Mike Garafolo, my Philadelphia Eagles interviewed DC Jesse Minter for their open position (along with the Rams' Chris Shula).

Among the #Eagles defensive coordinator interviews to date: #Rams DBs coach/pass game coordinator Chris Shula and Michigan DC Jesse Minter, sources say. Shula and Nick Sirianni were together on the #Chargers’ coaching staff 2015-16.

The position opened up after former DC Jonathan Gannon took the head coaching job with the Arizona Cardinals.

As an Eagles fan, I get it. Minter has done a fantastic job for Michigan and Gannon was maligned by fans for being too passive and refusing to adapt (even in the Super Bowl). On the other hand, when I kindly asked the Eagles to bring a Michigan defender onto the team to keep Brandon Graham company, this is NOT what I meant.

Anyway, please don't shoot the messenger. Just trying to keep y'all informed.

how many DCs in a row can we get that can figure out and shut down (sorta) OSU's offense? At some point, we're gonna swing and miss or foul tip, and ... fargin iceholes.

It always baffles me that Michigan coaches seem to leave at the most inopportune times. there's never a GOOD time to lose a coach, but it always seems to f-ing suck. Even the hiring of CP, which I liked a lot - was so late so that the immediate advantage possible - picking up the AA CB, wasn't really an option because of the add/drop deadline for school.

Or maybe its normal and it just feels bad.

He interviewed but it sounds like Shula has the inside track, so this might not be a MacDonald situation where the Ravens pulled a guy back that they had sent to UM.

It sucks but that's also a by-product of being a really good team these past couple of years.  You're hiring young, NFL-minded guys and so they're going to be in demand.  It happens but also is the price of being this good and seemingly having a head coach who pushes for his guys to be successful and grow.

If Jim's guys are getting poached by the NFL, then use it as a selling point. Tell recruits that, at Michigan, you're learning schemes that'll help you transition to the pros.

This is fucking insane. What radar was he on at Vanderbilt? LOL

He was hired almost entirely based on scheme. He had one year and FAILED against TCU. NFL organizations are infatuated with Harbaugh whether they want to hire him as the their head coach or not.

Would hate to lose him, but Michigan's defense will be loaded next year so I suspect we'd have a pretty good set of options to choose from, even this late in the cycle

Sad but true. Even with the explosion in college coach salaries, it seems that increasingly coaches would rather be at an NFL team, even though NFL head coaches and their staff rarely survive more than five years at the same place.
in addition, if someone wants to be an NFL HC he is much better off being an NFL coordinator than a college HC. The jump from college to pros at the HC level is getting rarer every year. Harbaugh is an example, not an exception, to that trend.
The college coaching experience is also getting worse by the day, a trend that is also likely to continue. That translates to more movement, something we we better get used to.
It also drives home the value Harbaugh brings to the table. One of his skills is his ability to attract and manage a coaching staff. It is unconscionable that we don’t have his signature on a new contract yet.

The days of Gary Moeller, Jerry Hanlon, Bill McCartney, or Fred Jackson staying with one school for even eight years are pretty much long gone. Few seem to be looking at Michigan as a destination—it's just a resume stop. With the portal, that applies to more than a few players as well.

The NFL is the NFL. And it’s not like the lowly Texans were asking for his services. It was the Eagles, probably the best team in the NFC and loaded with defensive playmakers. A prime Super Bowl contender for the foreseeable future. When they call, you’re picking up the phone.

Your point still stands, but there are things the NFL can offer that Michigan, along with any other college job, will never be able to offer. Does Minter want an actual offseason? Does he not want to recruit? Does he just want his sole focus to be on coaching? If so, the NFL can offer him that. Michigan will never be able to offer that.

Jim needs to ask John to come to A2 and spend a few days with their parents.

Once in town, Jim, John, and Jack need to grab a booth at the Brown Jug, have some burgers, and chat for a while.

Perhaps there’s a position coach hanging around Baltimore that’s ready for a different type of responsibility….  Just in case…

Blaming the offense and saying, "We tried" would not go over well in an interview.

TCU gained 488 yds. and was 8/16 on 3rd down. The offense made it close in the 2nd half. Minter was widely criticized for then blitzing too much and giving up big plays.

I thought he did a good job this season, but the TCU game was a letdown.

My absolute worst fear is Minter leaves and Partridge is promoted to DC. I would take Jay, Elston, random dude off the street, etc. I don’t mind Partridge on the staff, though personally he wouldn’t have been in my top 5, but definitely not ready to be DC at a championship level. I know Clinkscale will be promoted if Minter leaves but I worry they would make Partridge co-dc.
