Dan Enos rumors

Enos on Michigan's coaching staff? I recall him saying something about having Sparty blood when coaching CMU against Michigan. But Michigan needs to shake things up. A hire with ties to a rival is an asset here.
My issue is that he didn't exactly light it up at Arkansas as a coordinator. I don't see the value that he could add. Arkansas was not especially distinguished at anything, and he kind of rode out the remains of what Brian Kelly had built at CMU (it didn't go far).

good offense in 2015, his first season as the OC where they ranked 27th in scoring O. He had Brandon Allen as a QB. The Offense slipped for his final two seasons (57th and 62nd), but at this point, I'll take it happily.
I'm sure someone will do a more indepth research project on his career and offenses and I will read it happily before giving a final opinion. A pre-final opinion would be a thumbs up just because it's change.

He regressed to the mean in '16 and '17, with scoring offenses ranked 57th and 62nd, and with 428 yards/game in '16 and 373 in '17.
His predecessor Jim Chaney (now the OC for Georgia) had the 44th ranked scoring offense in '14 and 106th in '13, with 406 and 357 yards per game.
Arkansas tried to do what Michigan tries to do, balance the run and the pass game.

Harbaugh gets Pro Set since he played in the NFL, Drevno gets Jumbo since he is chunky. Pep gets I formation because he is very selfish. Enos gets Shotgun since he was a Sparty and they often have shotgun weddings.

Sure, he's an MSU guy, but his offenses have been fairly good at Arkansas, and that while having turnover at some key positions every single year. His offenses have been balanced, but his approach has changed depending on the situation of the team. He's a RB and QB coach, both of which are needs.
Also, I'd HAVE to assume that Drevno is going back to focusing on offensive line play. It no longer makes sense for him to be pulling double duty with Frey gone. I think it's a good hire.
Basically, if this means Drevno focuses on offensive line play, this could be great. If not... well, that would be, uh....

He will the the Assistant "to the" OC.
January 2nd, 2018 at 4:28 PM ^
Don't know much about him. Also wondering about Greg Roman. He was with Harbaugh forever and the Raven's season is over. I'm with everyone that regardless of who it is, I hope structural changes are made. I'd like to see one OC that calls plays and Harbaugh has veto or can call something himself. I have no idea if this is really an issue or not, but I'll pile on the opinion that it is. I think mainly I'd like to see one O line coach that only coaches the entire line. JH is a way better coach than I am, but fragmenting every position and duties just seems to make things more confusing.
January 2nd, 2018 at 4:40 PM ^
too, have you watched the Ravens offense, lol. Again same old recycled names. The Oline coaching gripe is the most uninformed compalint on hear. Tackles do not do the same things as guards and centers. It is normal and imo needed to have two coaches on the Oline. One for tackles/TEs and one for C/G. Because the steps, types of blocks, drills are different for both positions.

IF you know nothing about him, except that he used to coach for JH. NFL coaches are horrible. I'm serious most of those guys steal their paycheck every week. I don't want anybody else from the NFL on this coaching staff we already have enough of those. I didn't say keep things the same. I said go out and find a fresh, creative mind. High School thru D-1 are loaded with amazing offensive minds. Quit settling for your friends from the Good Old Boys club and go get a guy who can win games. Kinda like how he did with Don Brown.

Favoring his guys is the issue, lol. And I understand your post, you weren't advicating for him. It's funny because look at the two sides of the ball. Def has Don Brown, Mattty, an ex High school head coach(partridge), hopefully another ex-HS coach in Bush and Zordich. None of those were Harbaugh guys and defense is truly one of the best coached in the country. Offense has all of his guys, except Frey who looks like he is on the way out. And it may be at the moment one of the worst coached units in the country. He needs to get away from the "my guys" mindset and go find the best coaches, like he has on defense. It is so easy to have a good offense in football today. The rules favor the O so much. You can have lineman running 3-4 yards down field and still throw the ball, you can go up-tempo, DBs can't grab you (unless you play for Wisconsin) and there are so many amazing offensive concepts. And Michigan just seems to be regressing. I don't think it's all on coaches, I think they truly don't trust the players and that means you don't trust running certain plays. But maybe make the plays easier for the QBs/Players and the offense wouldn't be this bad.

"Your Harbaugh has been designed for offense and will require many high-end parts to run said offense. Yet his defense will be better than his offense. This paradox has not been explained."
January 2nd, 2018 at 4:58 PM ^
I agree with you on keeping Roman away, but how much did he as a TE coach have to do with their offensive production?
January 2nd, 2018 at 5:09 PM ^
I don't even know how we could judge Frey on one year. But I think our TEs were probably the best part of the receiving core so he didn't do that bad. I don't think Frey is the one designing them to run route concepts which make absolutely no sense. Gentry is a convert from QB, so he probably wasn't asked to block before in his entire life. The point remains that having 2 guys coach the OL is not new or a problem. You can get more accomplished by having your C/G work on gap/zone combos, while your T/TEs work on down blocks or reach steps. Plus the multitude of other diff between the two positions.
January 2nd, 2018 at 5:27 PM ^
Uhhhhh sure.
But I was talking about Roman as the TE coach for the Ravens since you seemed to correlate the Raven's offensive production to Roman being on the staff.
January 2nd, 2018 at 5:35 PM ^
I thought you were talking about Frey as the TE coach. Ravens TEs haven't done anything all year either so yeah, not a Roman fan. I'm a Steeler fan I watch Ravens games, their offense is one of the worst in the NFL. It's painful to watch

So no to Marty Morningwhig (sp?) as well.
January 2nd, 2018 at 5:45 PM ^
to anyone in the NFL if you are asking me, except Sean McVey. Maybe he will step down and take the OC job, lol. But heck no to Morningwhig. I don't even know how 70% of these NFL coaches still have jobs, lol

than I don't see things getting better. Harbaugh is starting to look like a mediocre NFL franchise in just recycling the same names. There are so many excellent offensive minds in football, fresh, young guys that would be great hires. Dan Enos is not that. South Carolina's OC was a 30 something GA, they called up for that game. And T-Rob the Def coord is 36 years old. Both on their first stints as coordinaters and they outcoached Michigan's staff yesterday. This offense is old and antiquated and adding Enos isn't going to make it better. Come on man, he has to do much better than that. And what's with the CO-OC crap, get a top OC, and lets go. And maybe think about adding a WR coach while you are at it. Because the lack of one jumps off the screen when watching games.

Hopefully the 10th assistant will be used on a WR coach. From the things I've read it sounds like Joe Hastings who is known to be a good recruiter will probably fill in. To be honest it is great that he is a good recruiter, but I'm not too sold on him as a WR coach after this year. It seems like other teams get much better separation from their WR. Maybe that has more to do with scheme after hearing what the SC players said about the offense.
January 2nd, 2018 at 5:23 PM ^
But when they do give us a replay showing the routes, it seems like some is scheme and some is players. Outside of DPJ we don't have an explosive WR. Crawford and McDoom I believe could be good if they were in an offense that actually used them as slot WRs instead of outside guys. Gentry and McKeon aren't going to get much separation they are going to beat you with size. And then we have a poor O-line but pass plays which are long developing. I just don't get it. It's like a complete lack of offensive understanding right now. Peters looks completely lost, his feet are in a rush, he stares down WRs forever. And O'korn and Speight looked the same if not worse at times. We may throw one hitch and one slant a game. Everything is complex, NFL routes, with young WRs without a true coach.....
January 2nd, 2018 at 5:34 PM ^
I have no idea so can you give an example of a complex NFL route?
I think not having Tarik Black really hurt since he was the primary deep threat. It's almost like they couldn't have anyone step into that role since they prepped the offseason running other routes. I could be wrong, but it almost seemed like they rarely sent DPJ on deep route. I just have more recollection of him running shallow to mid crossing routes.
It sounds really dumb to have such complex route patterns that the offense can only install enough that the defense knows what is going to be run.
January 2nd, 2018 at 5:39 PM ^
I see alot of long developing option route concepts. In the NFL bascially every route is an option route, so the WR has to read the defender to make the correct read on the route. Well if you have young inexperienced WRs that is a huge issue. Most of the routes have WRs running 10-12 yards down field with a poor Oline. There is rarely a quick read like a hitch, slant or stick concept. With a young QB and WRs, I would have liked to see the quick passing game used way more to get them in the rhythm. And we rarely ever did that.
January 2nd, 2018 at 4:39 PM ^
Sounds like Nussmeier all over again.
January 2nd, 2018 at 4:49 PM ^
And steal one of Oklahoma's Co-Offensive Coordinators to give us some spark. Whether it's Mike Gundy's brother or the other guy. What teams did you see in the playof that are running the same boring offense Harbaugh is? It's horribly predictable, and former Cleveland Browns employee Pepper Hamilton brought the stench of Cleveland with him by designing passing routes that were too simple or resembled a Jackson Pollack painting. Change is a must above all. This "meritocracy" Harbaugh claims he has is more of a hypocrisy when it comes to his staff and keeping his buddies around. No one, coach or player, is bigger than the program.

an O Coordinator, hes a CO-CO-CO O Coordinator if he comes to Michigan. HOnestly if I was him i wouldn't take it. I'm an OC and i couldn't imagine having 4 people screaming in my ear during games trying to give advise on what play to call, lol

i think you're right. umbig11 said "ST and offensive role" and there's no way an OC is working with special teams. if he comes i hope it's the following overhaul:
- Frey leaves
- Jay goes back to TE
- Enos plugs in at RB/co-ST
- 10th assistant coach spot used for WR
- Drevno gets demoted to OL only
- Pep gets fired
- Hire a traditional OC, ditching the "passing game" and "run game" coordinator tags and the mutual play calling that comes with it
i'm open to a lot of options at OC but in this scenario i am definitely giving fisch a call.

Dan Enos inherited a CMU program that had gone 9-4, 8-6, 8-6, and 11-2 the previous four seasons, and promptly led the Chippewas to two successive 3-9 seasons. His overall record at CMU was a stellar 26-36.
At Arkansas, his final two offenses ranked 57th and 62nd in the country, and was fired along with the rest of Bielema's staff. In his three seasons as OC there, Arkansas went 19-19 overall and a sparkling 9-15 in the conference.
This is the opposite of bringing in Don Brown—this is like bringing Brady Hoke back onto the staff.
Speaking of Brady Hoke, if this was him hiring Enos, the entire fanbase would be in flames, but since it's Harbaugh it's "trust the coaches" territory.
January 2nd, 2018 at 5:16 PM ^
I don't think the majority of responses in this thread can be mistaken as a sign of faith among the fanbase.
January 2nd, 2018 at 5:34 PM ^
But if this really comes to pass that Harbaugh selects him for OC, it will bring back bad memories of RR hiring Greg Robinson, who at least had a SB victory and a NC championship on his resume as an assistant, misleading as those resume items were.
If it's Enos as RB/ST coach that's a different thing, but that would be a notable step down for him. Sure, he might not have any better options, but that's hardly inspiring from a Michigan standpoint.
¯\_(ツ)_/¯
