Dallas Gant is a Buckeye because Michigan started recruiting him too late. Dad is a Michigan fan

Submitted by Maizen on

TOLEDO, Ohio -- James Gant stood up on the stage at Toledo (Ohio) St. John's Jesuit's assembly room proudly wearing his new bright red Ohio State hat.

His son, Dallas, had just announced his commitment to Ohio State and the two were posing for pictures and doing the Buckeyes "OH-IO" pose as the hot lights from above the stage beamed down.

James was smiling bigger than he's ever smiled in his life. He was so proud to be a Buckeye.

That's weird because James is a Michigan fan.

"I was a Michigan fan," James said, letting out deep breath while hesitating to admit it. "I was a Michigan fan, no doubt about it. I'll tell you man, this is Toledo. This is a half and half city."

"I'm excited to be a part of the Ann Arbor and Columbus battle," Gant said. "Michigan made their appearance pretty late, but it was cool. I went down to visit ad loved it. I loved Coach Harbaugh. It was a great time down there, but they just kind of game in late. Overall, I just felt more comfortable at Ohio State."

Had Michigan started recruiting Gant a year earlier, maybe this battle would have been different. James, who was admittedly excited (from a fan's perspective) when Michigan brought in Harbaugh, said it may have been a tight race.

But this is just another example of Meyer and his staff identifying an elite Ohio prospect early, recruiting him hard and, like always, closing the deal.

"All you're really concerned about is your kid, right?" James said. "When you get an organization like Ohio State interested in your kid and showing all the things they offer, you just want what's best for your kid. Of course I'm a Michigan fan, shoot, I may be a Michigan fan in four years. Who knows? Right now, I'm a Dallas Gant fan and the best program for him is this. ... I hope he kills Michigan."

"Michigan got me to think a little bit," Gant said. "Coach (Don) Brown is great, we built a great relationship and coach Harbaugh is obviously a unique guy with a great coaching staff.

Despite his allegiance. I don't know how to inbed anything, but someone named Brian who runs this site wrote this: OH LB Dallas Gant, currently the only 2018 linebacker Michigan is recruiting, made it up to Ann Arbor over the weekend and was duly impressed: "Coach Harbaugh was a great guy," Gant said. "He took a lot of time out of his day to talk with my dad and I one on one and gave us an inside look of what the program is like and how he runs things. It was definitely impressive, and his track record speaks for itself." More encouraging than the quote is Gant telling Steve Lorenz that he's planning on coming back up for Michigan's spring game next weekend. Back-to-back visits speak to a real interest even though he's just a short drive down US-23. Gant plans to commit on his birthday on May 16th, so this one is going to wrap up quickly. Lorenz thinks he's a "Michigan/ND type kid," FWIW, despite a current OSU lead on the crystal ball. Leave Maizen be, he's the messenger.

truly wasn't a michigan fan.If Michigan offered me late, I was a fan, I'd still go to Michigan. Glad he wants to play for a school that has OSU fans ref games to win.

A bullet dodged. And that's not sour grapes. But for now I'll grant Dallas Grant a funny, "game over man, game over! ...."

Not really. Hey hah hah hah ... we're gonna nuke you from orbit, just to be sure.

I coached Dallas from 6-8th grade. He is a great humble kid and very smart in the class room. I hope he has success in the class and on the field. It was a ND vs OSU battle all the way from what I hear. Maybe he didn't fit the system or maybe it is a small class or maybe Michigan got to recruiting him late or maybe it's something else or a lite of everything. Who knows. I am happy he gets to go to a big time program.

Well to bad he is not like Speiman's dad and threaten to disown his son. Ohio is a state that takes imagenary state lines to a new level. The bottom line is Harbaugh will be wasting his time with most of these kids. I am in a kind of wait and see mode. If we can get Rumler as he grew up a Michigan fan and some others will see. They just offered rumler and they think they allready swayed him, that is how confident they have become. They lost 31-0 and still think meyer is invinsible. I do agree that if every cycle we can win a battle or two for a ohio kid it will go a long way psychlogically. This frustration we all feel can change on a dime with a win and some recruiting battle wins. I feel very confident there will be a changing of the guard at some point and it will be all the sweeter especially with what happened in last years game. We have some really big recruiting battles coming for the likes of Rumler and Dobbs who Michigan better start getting after. These guys are much bigger gets than gant for sure. Dobbs is from Bellville and he should be hanging out at UM not on OSU campus. Jordan grew up a osu fan and there was no chance with him but if we do not get Dobbs and Rumler then I will concede that Michigan's staff flat out cant compete with osu's. Of course if we get them well then everything is good. Like I said, wait and see who wins for the big fish who we are currently favored for. This gant kid is not a major loss in any way. We are bringing in kids better than him in my opinion.  Devin Bush is the best linebacker on either squad and should be here three more years hopefully. I realize if we won the game last year the frustration level would be just a little bit lower.

sudden?

It seems to me that Coach Harbaugh is getting whom he wishes, or someone that turns out to be a more than serviceable replacement, while focusing both upon recruiting his system and upon recruiting a certain type of athlete and certain type of young man.

It's not about competing hard for every single student that other schools also prioritize.

As long as our classes are turning out like the last couple, I see no reason to grab a couple lines from one high school kid's subjective opinion ("late" is not a precise quantity), and press it to fit a generalized critique of how we are recruiting.

Kid picked osu.  There were probably a lot of reasons. Michigan recruited him later.  If he loved Michigan he would have come to Michigan.  Move on.  No damage done.

Then you weren't ever a fan. That simple. I couldn't imagine just flipping, regardless of timing. That said, I don't hold it against him. It's 100% his choice.

He gave a decent nod to Michigan there, complimenting the staff, and clearly he seems to have reasoned this one out and made a decision which, in Gan't sview, is maximally beneficial. I guess where I am having trouble is that - and I could be wrong about this - on a per capita talent basis, Ohio isn't what it was back in the day, so I get the staff perhaps not making it a priority and instead trying to compete in more talent-dense places. That's what you should do anyway.

I don't know that the OP is upset, but I don't understand why Ohio necessarily has to be at the top of an effective recruiting strategy.

He is going to OSU because he wants to go there. Recruiting early or late makes no difference if you want to go to a school. Plenty of guys flip when they get the offer they want late in the game. He preferred OSU. His prerogative.

"I was a Michigan fan," James said, letting out deep breath while hesitating to admit it. "I was a Michigan fan, no doubt about it. ..." So he "was a Michigan fan" but wasn't cultivated enough. Maybe he's a great talent or maybe not. If he's that good then maybe Harbaugh will decide to try to flip him and maybe Harbaugh will be successful. Frankly anyone who claims to be a Michigan fan, turns Harbaugh down probably isn't someone we want or need. See yah.

legitimate issue in regards to Ohio HS coaches. It's probably even stronger than the coaching inertia in the South. I suspect JH knows the situation and assesses the investment/return better than we do. Was JH and his staff too slow or disengaged to recruit Dallas? Possible but unlikely. Under JH and Urban, the vision and values of the 2 programs are vastly different. JH has international trips and team mom and GPA contests - Urban has creative recruiting events in Columbus and a football machine. They both want to win and create elite programs - winning on Saturdays is paramount - but the programs are very different. Dallas chose the other path.

Just seen that another CB was put in for C Hinton, the 5* SDE from GA in the 2019 class. His younger brother is supposedly even better. If Harbaugh and staff is out getting kids like this, who gives a shit if they're from ohio or not.
