Current Scholarship Count-90

Submitted by TK on January 10th, 2022 at 1:53 PM

Figured I would make an update maybe once a week or so during this time where we are seeing a high amount of turnover. What is noteworthy is that we have had a little more churn than what most expected, so it makes a little more sense for us to be pursuing more recruits and/or a player from the portal. Currently at 90, I don’t think it’s a stretch to see 6 to 8 more guys who will want to move on to their next chapter, whether that’s the NFL, another school, or just a real world job. So I would expect to hear more names come up we are pursuing. Definitely seems like adding another RB would be a priority. This is informational for those who like looking at the current roster for 2022, if you are offended I’m sorry (not sorry).

Does Bowman have another year? I really don't see the loser of the QB battle transferring, and I honestly thought we should be looking to add another grad transfer who has playing experience. WR we really aren't that stacked at depth, as we don't know what Bell will be when he gets back. Saintistill was someone I thought could transfer, and I'm hoping we hold onto Henning. As for TE, I agree there's probably going to be some movement there. I'm not sure if Hibner has played, but with 2 new ones coming in it'll be interesting to watch. I think it really comes down to whether or not the guys left from the 2019 cycle have played any, and if not, I think they move on.

Also, Brad Robbins is back!

Something something alarmist “not with the way things are headed” and panic button material.

Am I doing this right given the coaching rumors?

Sarcasm aside, I’m sort of expecting another WR transfer or someone to leave from the secondary dependent upon how practices shake out this fall. Curious to see how our QB situation shakes out too.

Any word on whether Moody will be back?

Does the scholarship limit matter anymore? If a team is over 85 scholarships, what is stopping a program from telling a player on the roster, a recruit, or transfer, “Hey, we need to classify you as a preferred walk on, but talk with this car dealership down the road. They’ll hook you up with an NIL deal that will cover tuition, room and board, and more as long as you are on our roster. We don’t have a limit on the number of players on the team, so you’ll get paid as long as you stay on the team.”

Thanks for posting. I'd be curious to know how many we have on average on the scholarship roster at each position group to get some idea whether we might be over or understocked at any given position.

We've just had two really strong recruiting classes. Plenty of veterans are going to get passed up from the 2019 and 2020 classes. The scholarship count will more than work itself out.

What's the word on Dunlop as an prospect at RB? It just a "grab a few carries to give guys a break" type of guy or is he expected to be legit?

There’s a couple YouTube videos online that give a scouting report. He’s a three star but played against solid competition in Texas and put up solid numbers. One of the analysts said he’s Haskins but faster?

Supposedly runs a 4.6 40 but looks faster than that to me given the fact he’s blowing past everyone in all his clips I’ve seen.

Full report here: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=D23dSnVGXIA

I’m liking what I’ve heard.

I appreciate these updates. One small improvement would be to Indicate which true freshmen are on campus (early enrollees) vs. those that are expected in the fall.

We should be at 89 now. Donovan Jeter on Instagram a few days ago made a post thanking all of the coaches and teammates for the season. Players don't usually do that if they are staying.

I really don't get the QB's in this year's class.

Denegal was in the Army game Saturday as a fill-in and he looked like he couldn't hit the broad side of a barn.

Orji sounds like a project as well.

If Cade moves on, we literally have no backup.

Would it really have been that difficult to get a decent qb this year?

Well, there's Bowman right?  That's probably as good as you're going to get for a backup QB unless you have a young stud in waiting like JJ was last year, and to the point above, it's nearly impossible to get two of those guys in a row because one won't want to wait for the other too long.

And short of a five star, you don't really want to count on a freshman at QB anyway.  An experienced backup (like Bowman) is probably the better option.

I think the jury is still out on this as Hart has only been on board at Michigan one season.  For most recruits recruiting is a longer-term process (although NIL $$$ will likely continue to change this for the ones with dollar signs in their eyes and the eyes of their 'handlers').

Probably looking at losing:

sainristil and Dixon probably. WR room is way too crowded.

whichever of Jones/Barnhart isn’t the right tackle. The loser of that one will probably be good enough to step in and start at a mid tier power five.

id be surprised if Jeter and the Oregon State Nose are back next year. Iwunnah (sp?) has a pretty poor motor, I don’t think he’s really a difference maker. Jeter is a 6th year with multiple kids so even if he’s a late pick/UdFa guy, making more money and having more time to spend with his family is a pretty enticing option.

perry and Dennis are another two that would just make sense. Got passed up, not serious contributors, and returning starters blocking playing time.

on top of that, I’d guess 2-4 more just naturally work themselves out. So

Looking at anywhere from 9-12 more departures IMO

I don’t think it’s going to be surprising if a starter or potential starter at WR transfers. I’m not saying it’s going to be Sanristil, but between him, Bell, Johnson, Wilson, Anthony, and Henning you’ve got multiple guys who probably and rightfully feel they could start at most places. Then you add a highly ranked freshman like Clemons who already has college size into the mix and that’s a very crowded room.

And you know they see what someone like Jameson Williams did this season after being 4th on Ohio State’s depth chart. That’s why I think it’s potentially a win-win situation. Similar to how Charbonnette transferring was a win-win. Charbonnette gets to become a starter elsewhere and thrive and Michigan isn’t trying to rotate 4 backs like they poorly did in 2020.

4th in touches with an injured Ronnie bell, and a still learning the ropes Andrel Anthony.

he’s a fine player, but I just don’t see where he’s fitting in now that AJ henning has fully emerged as the little explosive guy.

but I think he’s clearly the 4th or 5th best wideout without even considering the freshmen that’ll be coming on campus and eating up second team reps

I see several names here that are not on scholarship and would have to be renewed. Is some of this an educated guess on who you expect to come back?
