Competition for jersey numbers!

Submitted by Blue_42 on

This is interesting. Found it over on Maize 'n Brew.

"There was a battle for jersey No. 9, and Grant Perry lost his number through competition to Donovan Peoples-Jones. Perry is now No. 88."

I love it! If you want it you have to earn it. I wonder how many other battles went on?

I picture a conversation like this:

Player: "Coach, I want a certain number."

Harbaugh: "Son, what difference does it make?  The number doesn't make the man."

Player: "Yes, but I still want the number."

Harbaugh: "You want me to just give it to you?

Player: "Yes, coach."

Harbaugh: "I won't do that.  You have to earn it.  Nothing is free here, son.  Nothing."

Player: "Yes sir!"

I'm thinking more of this...

Player: "Coach, I want a certain number."

Harbaugh: *intense stare at said player*

Player: *slightly sweating* "But I know that (insert player) has that number already."

Harbaugh: *intensifies stare*

Player: *profusely sweating* "I'm going to go and compete hard for that number" *walks away*

Harbaugh: Image result for harbaugh smile

I play both soccer and football in high school same seasons this fall. I'm the kicker. Offered to pay someone $10 for number ten so I could be ten in both

i like that he lost it becasue of him losing a football competition.  If he were to have lost it solely becasue of his legal trouble, I would fear that it would mentally disengage him from the team.

not that he wouldn't have deserved it, just I think it is better to have lost a football competition be the reason for losing the number.  Now, cutting his playing time I think would be an appropriate response to his legal troubles.

I get competition for an open number. But, taking a guys number off his back is bullshit. He's a teammate and already had the number for a year.

He got kicked off team for some bad behavior, and put the program through alot of crap. So, being, you know, off the team.... the number 9 went back into the open pool.   He luckily was reinstated, and now had to compete for the number.   This is EXACTLY how it should be.

If you don't want to lose your number, don't get drunk in public and assault someone, causing embarrassment to yourself, your family, your team, and your school.  It's pretty simple.

And, FWIW, I'm guessing that after pondering his actions and getting ... ahem ... guidance from his coaches, Perry agrees.  He's fortunate to be on the team and likely realizes it.

Not when you do dumb shit. For all the team could of known he may not of come back and been kicked off. What do they do hold the jersey for him? Hell no that should be another lesson to you.

Btw I am happy perry is back but he has some leg work to do to get back in good graces.

I love this; genius. Once you earn you should be held accountable to keep it too. The number 1 jersey should not be given to anyone unless they are killing it.

As for Perry; this concerns me. He let a freshman beat him out? Yes, I am aware of the talents of DPJ. He should of been the most motivated WR on our roster after how lucky he is to be on the team.
