College Gameday to be at ND for Michigan vs ND game?
I have been tweeting Kirk for weeks about this but he hasn’t responded. I am sure they know where it will be but want to wait to announce it. That seems to be the likely destination.
For anyone who will say they won’t go there because the game is on NBC, you’re wrong. There have been many cities to which they brought the show that had the game on CBS or Fox.
I always wondered about that and how it would work with Fox having the rights to the Michigan vs OSU game. Good to know game day will still show up for that.
I’m surprised Kirk hasn’t replied to your tweets.
I'm surprised, too.
Not me. He probably lurks on MGoBoard and knows it was you sending the tweets.
They have gone to South Bend before when we've played there so I'm not sure why people would think it's not a possibility.
I don’t know, either.
I'd be pretty surprised if it wasn't in Atlanta for Auburn-Washington. That game is on ABC, it's in a nice city in a nice stadium where the college football hall of fame is located. ND game is on a non-ESPN family network at the same time. That'd be surprising to me if they chose an off-network game for week one.
How the fuck did Auburn get away with playing a "neutral" game in Atlanta against fucking WASHINGTON?
SEC teams are fucking pussies.
No different than TCU getting a "neutral" game against OSU in Arlington (or TCU getting Oregon State in Jerryworld in 2010 or TCU getting LSU in Jerryworld in 2013), or FSU getting a "neutral" game against Boise State in Jacksonville in 2019. Some teams are just lucky in that they're located very close to the NFL stadiums that the college games want to use.
When they use to have the Kickoff Classic in New Jersey, some local teams got the in-name-only neutral treatment as well (Penn State, Maryland, Syracuse)
This is what the SEC does because the Playoff Committee doesn’t hold anything against them. Very rarely will an SEC team head north of the Mason Dixon Line to play another power program. Only one I can think of was LSU vs Wisconsin in Green Bay and LSU walked out with an L.
The only other one I can remember is Alabama playing in Happy Valley around 2011.
Georgia went to ND last year.
LSU played Wisconsin at Lambeau Field in what...2013 or 2014...
Vandy came to Ann Arbor in 06 I believe...
Bad example; Nashville is 250 miles closer than Lincoln, Nebraska. Mason-Dixon line be damned.
Plus it's Vandy and they don't really count.
The playing-up-north thing is a bit overdone. Auburn just played a home-and-home with Clemson, which is tougher than anything else they possibly could’ve done, including a home-and-home with Ohio State.
Well, I love the SEC!
At the same time, the space to house the festivities certainly favors South Bend. Smack-dab in the middle of the city is not ideal for a number of reasons.
Huh? This comment is confusing, considering Atlanta is no stranger to hosting a number of major sporting / entertainment events (as you say, "smack-dab in the middle of the city).
College Football Hall of Fame is right next to Centennial Olympic Park. It’s an excellent spot to hold college gameday.
That's a great point - hadn't thought of it (despite visiting last November!)
Still, I can't help but think being on a college campus for a renewed rivalry wouldn't be the best option, everything else being equal. It sounds like people are fairly divided on the ratings debate.
Well I certainly agree that it’s always better on an actual college campus. College football is great because of the traditions, so the city scapes and stadiums of pro teams is not as fun.
because they want to grab ratings away from a game that will have better ratings than Aub-Wash.
If college gameday goes to ATL are any of us making time to watch? No. If its at South Bend? Probably. Aub- Wash fans will watch anyway as that game will get just as much coverage.
Uh yeah, we’re all going to watch anyways. No matter where it is. Also I live in Atlanta, so hell, I might even go. I mean, I’ll probably get lazy and watch it on my couch, but I could go.
its labor day weekend...
Abraham Lincoln was the 16th president
I'll be watching that game.
Notre Dame is 1-5 all-time against Michigan with GameDay in attendance (94L, 98W, 99L, 03L, 11L, 13L).
PERFECT!!!
Break out the bubbly!!!
Oh my god, can the season just start already?!?!?!
Nothing against the OP at all, I'm just really fucking amped up, already!
I doubt it since it is an NBC game.
Washington vs Auburn
Louisville vs Bama (Orlando)
Now that I looked, I am not sure, not too many needle mover games out there.
It'll be Washington vs. Auburn.
Louisville lost Lamar and the team was bad around him. They'll be significantly worse without Lamar covering up their issues.
I'm not so sure it'll be Auburn v. Washington. Definitely an inferior game in terms of national appeal. I agree that the ABC v NBC is a factor but they do NBC and FOX and CBS games frequently so it's not at all a hard and fast rule. The appeal of M v ND might outweigh the networks on which each respective game is being shown.
Washington @ Auburn will be a "bigger" matchup in terms of pre-season team rankings, but it won't draw nearly as many eyeballs at Michigan @ ND. It's also a night game. Seems like the obvious choice for Gameday in terms of ratings.
It'll be pretty close in terms of rankings. All four teams will be top 20. Both games will probably feature a team in the low teens and a team in the back end of the top ten.
Michigan vs ND is far and away the marquis game from a national perspective.
I just scanned the week's schedule. Michigan-ND is probably the best bet on Saturday. The only others I'd consider are Washington-Auburn, Tennessee-West Virginia, or Louisville-Alabama.
However, there are a couple of big tilts on Sunday and Monday. Sunday, Miami plays LSU in the Cowboy Kickoff thingy we played in last year in Dallas. And on Monday, Virginia Tech is at Florida State.
My pure guess is it's at ND, Auburn or in Dallas.
Tennessee - WV would be a bad choice. Tennessee had its first ever 8 loss season and first ever winless season in conference (lol).
And they aren't getting better talent wise.
Do they only do one location that weekend? Have they ever done a gameday on a Labor Day Sunday or Monday?
Only one location and always Saturday.
If it is, I might think about making the drive down in the morning just to see it, and then heading back in the afternoon. May be a fun alternative to going to the game without spending a butt ton on tickets.
Someone on Reddit said the Barstool ND and Barstool Michigan accounts tweeted gameday was going to ND at around the same time. Both cited "sources" so just take that for what its worth.
As others have mentioned, Auburn-Washington is also a valid choice for Gameday. College Gameday is perfectly willing to appear at games broadcast by other networks, it's one of the strengths of the program. However, this is a coin flip situation, and I believe that they are willing to be persuaded by logistics when doing coin flips. So my guess remains Atlanta.
But South Bend would not surprise me. Michigan-ND has rankings, history, and (this might be the deciding factor if ESPN goes there) real pressure on both programs.
Having just been to the College Football Hall of Fame (on purpose for the trip, but accidentally during SEC Media Days, specifically the day Saban was there...woo boy) I can say that Centennial Olympic Park right across the way is a very easy, straight-forward set up between the HoF and MB Stadium. Yes, they have a standard setup for Notre Dame, but if you're going to do a couple of days worth of setup for the long weekend of the CFB opener, I can see it being Atlanta for that.
But as you said, ND would not surprise me either.
I think it’ll be there. Night game. Two storied programs. Historic rivalry. Renewed rivalry. Both teams with preseason hype.
And Mineral King debut and maize pants.
